Arizona Diamondbacks's Latest Performance :
Late Game Struggles
The Arizona Diamondbacks looked like one of the best teams in the MLB to kick off the 2018 season but the Diamondbacks have endured some struggles as of recent as they find themselves in a dogfight for the #1 spot in the weakest division in baseball. The Diamondbacks were unable to close out their recent series against the Giants on a positive note as they dropped the game 5-4 behind a walk-off performance in San Francisco. The Diamondbacks gave the ball to Clay Buchholz who has been really good in his first 4 starts of 2018 and this appearance was no different as the former first-round pick struck out 7 guys in the 6 innings he appeared him as well as lowered his ERA down to 1.88. The bullpen was solid in the exit of Buchholz as the combination of Yoshihisa Hirano and Archie Bradley were able to strike out 3 guys in the 7th and 8th innings. What happened in the later innings is what eventually loss the game for Arizona as both Brad Boxberger and Andrew Chafin gave up 3 earned runs in the short appearance they had which pushed the Giants to a win. Offensively the best player for Arizona was their all-star Paul Goldschmidt who went 4 for 5 with 2 RBIs. Goldschmidt was able to pick up doubles in both the 5th and 6th innings which has risen his season total up to 22 RBIs. On paper, 22 RBIs seems good enough for any 1B but this is not what the Diamondbacks expected out of the veteran as he has cracked 110 RBIs in 3 seasons.
Colorado Rockies's Latest Performance :
Relievers Stay On Track
The Colorado Rockies are seeking consecutive playoff appearances for the first time in their franchise history and they are doing all of the right things as of recent which includes winning the necessary games to stay on par. The Rockies were able to extend their small wins streak in their recent series against the last-place Cincinnati Reds behind a 6-3 win on 6/6. Although Jon Gray wasn’t perfect in his 13th start of the season he was able to even out his win-loss total behind a 5 inning appearance where he gave up 3 earned runs. Gray has not been anything like his 2017 self where he went 12-4 as he now sits a 6-6 record as well as a 5.66 ERA and if the Rockies want to get back on track they need the left-handed starter to get back to form. The relievers were really solid in Gray’s exit as the combination of Harrison Musgrave, Scott Oberg, Jake McGee, and Wade Davis were able to keep the Reds off the board with a 7 strikeout appearance. Wade Davis was able to record his 20th save of the season behind a solid 9th inning which has the veteran over 20 saves for the 3rd consecutive year. The Rockies bats were good enough to earn Gray a victory as they were able to score 6 runs on 8 hits in a road matchup. Backup catcher Tony Wolters was really good in only his 32nd game of the season as the youngster went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Wolters may have a .174 batting average on the season but the 25-year-old has been really good in his last 17 ABs as he is batting .353.

Against The Spread Selection: Arizona Diamondbacks
My reason for the pick :
These two teams look locked in for a photo finish in terms of the #1 spot in the NL West and considering this could go down to the wire every game is important from here on out especially when they play each other. Koch may have gone against the Marlins last outing but that is beside the fact of him having a career game and he should bring the confidence into this game. Normally I side with the better pitching side (Arizona) but when they play in Coors Field I always side the better pitching teams as no matter how bad your bats are the air-pressure could carry any ball out of the stadium. The bullpen has been the Diamondbacks bread and butter this year and considering their recent bump in the road on 6/6 I expect them to be very good against an inconsistent Rockies lineup.
