Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Atlanta Braves vs Los Angeles Dodgers

Game 1 of a 3-game set between the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers will take place on Friday night at 10:10 pm EST at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California.  The Dodgers have been spectacular lately in winning 7 of their last 9 contests and are currently in a tie for 3rd place within the NL West division.  On the other hand, the Braves occupy the top spot within the NL East division and have won 5 of their last 9 games while also further separating themselves even more from the 2nd place team in the division (Nationals) in winning 3 of 4 games in a 4-game home set amongst the two squads this past weekend.  This will be the 1st matchup of 2018 amongst these two teams, however, they have both split the last 6 games while also splitting a 4-game set at Dodger Stadium on 7-20-2017.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

The Braves come into this game winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U is 2-3.   Recently, the Braves lost a 3-game road set against the Philadelphia Phillies on 5-23-2018 while following this series with yet another road series loss against the Boston Red Sox on 5-27-2018.  They would, however, recover in their next 4-game home series versus the Mets by settling for the series tie after a 4-1 loss on 5-30-2018.  Following this series, the Braves were impressive in a 4-game home series win against the Washington Nationals on 6-3-2018, however, were quickly bought back to earth by the Padres in game 1 of a 3-game road set by stunning the Braves at PetCo Park by a score of 11-4.  The Braves would, however, tie the series in game 2 with a 14-1 victory on 6-5-2018.

For the season, the Braves are averaging 5.10 runs per game (4th) with a team batting average of .263 (3rd), 72 homers (10th) along with 38 stolen bases (6th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.57 (9th) with 541 strikeouts (8th) along with 27 quality starts on the season (9th).

Freddie Freeman (.339 BA on 233 AB), Nick Markakis (.332 BA on 244 AB), Ryan Flaherty (.274 BA on 117 AB), and Ozzie Albies (.261 BA on 264 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Braves all season.  Dansby Swanson (.274 BA on 175 AB) and Ender Incarte (.244 BA on 246 AB) have also been consistent at the plate for the Braves.

Mike Foltynewicz (5-3, 69 IP, 21 R, 50 H, 5 HR, 30 BB, 80 SO, 2.22 ERA) and Brandon McCarthy (5-2, 63.1 IP, 36 R, 76 H, 9 HR, 19 BB, 52 SO, 4.83 ERA) have been bright spots on the mound for the Braves this year.  Sean Newcomb (7-1, 68.2 IP, 22 R, 49 H, 3 HR, 33 BB, 68 SO, 2.49 ERA) and Julio Teheran (4-4, 71 IP, 34 R, 57 H, 14 HR, 33 BB, 56 SO, 4.31 ERA have also been solid for Atlanta in 2018.

Los Angeles Dodgers's Latest Performance :

The Dodgers come into this matchup winners of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2.  Recently, the Dodgers would win a 3-game home set against the San Diego Padres on 5-27-2018 while tying a 4-game home set against the Philadelphia Phillies on 5-31-2018.  They would also go on to sweep a 3-game road set against the Colorado Rockies on 6-3-2018.  They would most certainly carry this momentum into a 3-game road set versus the Pittsburgh Pirates as they would get the 5-0 shutout on 6-5-2018.

The Dodgers average 4.63 runs per game (7th) with a team batting average of .241 (19th), 68 homers (16th), along with 18 stolen bases (28th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.63 (10th) with 589 strikeouts (3rd) along with 24 quality starts (18th).

Yasmani Grandal (.246 BA on 175 AB), Cody Bellinger (.226 BA on 217 AB), and Corey Seager (.267 BA on 101 AB) have been the leaders offensively for the Dodgers this season.  Chris Taylor (.257 BA on 230 AB) has also been pivotal to the Dodger’s offensive attack.

Clayton Kershaw (1-4) has pitched 49 innings while allowing 15 runs on 44 hits, 7 homers, 11 walks, and 53 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.76.  Alex Wood (1-4) has pitched 64.1 innings while allowing 35 runs on 60 hits, 8 homers, 13 walks, and 60 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.48.

How Atlanta Braves & Los Angeles Dodgers Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Braves are 34-27 ATS while the O/U is 28-30-3.  On the other hand, the Dodgers are 26-34 while the O/U is 29-28-3.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

After a very successful home stand for the Braves in which they won 5 of 8 games (including a 3-1 series win over the Nationals), they now travel out west to battle a Dodgers team that has won 7 of their last 9 games.  Pitchers for both teams have not been named, however, the Braves staff has allowed less than 3 runs per game in their last homestand while the offense put up an average of 4 runs per game during this time.  It will be interesting to see how the Dodgers, who are 10-8 in their last 18 home games, approach this game 1 matchup on Friday night in that they must be able to exhibit the focus needed in which to climb back into the NL West standings while also attempting to surpass their momentum that results from their current, outstanding play.

Against The Spread Selection: Atlanta Braves

My reason for the pick :

While I certainly salute the Dodgers for playing better lately despite the injuries and overall inconsistencies related to the team, in general, I must say that the Braves will indeed win the opener simply due to their ability to obtain the necessary hits at pivotal points in the game in which to get wins.  The dangerous aspect of this Atlanta team is that they seem comfortable both winning in both high and low-scoring games which is mainly due to their lights out pitching staff.  In all, while I expect the Dodgers to compete in this matchup, the Braves bats along with its pitching will be too much for them to handle in the end.
