Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

New York Yankees vs NY Mets

Game 1 of a 3-game Subway series between the red-hot Yankees and the ice-cold Mets will take place on Friday night at 7:10 pm EST at CitiField in New York, New York.  The Yankees are currently 2nd place within the tough AL East division and have won 6 of their last 7 games while the Mets have had a rough go of it lately in losing their last 5 games and falling to the 4th spot within the division.  This will be the 1st meeting of the year amongst these two squads, however, in consecutive home and home matchups in 2017, the Yankees swept the series, altogether, which included a sweep at Yankee Stadium as well as one at CitiField on 8-16-2017.

New York Yankees's Latest Performance :

The Yankees have won 4 of their last 5 matchups to where the O/U was 2-3.  After a 3-game home series win versus the Houston Astros on 5-30-2018, the Yankees would remain hot in winning games 2 and games 3 of a 4-game road set against the struggling Baltimore Orioles with games 1 and 4 being postponed due to weather conditions.  The Yankees would tie the Detroit Tigers in their following series on 6-4-2018 while whipping the Toronto Blue Jays on 6-5-2018 in the opener of a 2-game road set by a score of 7-2.

For the season, the Yankees average 5.61 runs per game (1st) with a team batting average of .257 (5th), 96 home runs (1st), along with 30 stolen bases (15th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.73 (12th) with 579 strikeouts (5th), along with 29 quality starts on the season (6th).

Aaron Judge (.276 BA on 214 AB), Didi Gregorius (.243 BA on 206 AB), and Brett Gardner (.260 BA on 200 AB) have been outstanding for the Yankees this year at the plate.  Giancarlo Stanton (.251 BA on 223 AB) and Miguel Andujar (.305 BA on 190 AB) have also been solid at the plate thus far.

On the other hand, Luis Severino (9-1) has pitched 86 innings while allowing 22 runs on 59 hits, 4 homers, 21 walks, and 102 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.20 while  Masahiro Tanaka(7-2) is also an important piece to the Yankee pitching staff as he has pitched 67.2 innings while allowing 38 runs on 59 hits, 15 homers, 18 walks, and 69 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.79.

NY Mets's Latest Performance :

The New York Mets have lost their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-3.  Recently, the Mets would tie a 4-game road set versus the Atlanta Braves on 5-30-2018.  This momentum was not carried into their next series as they were swept in a 4-game home set versus the Chicago Cubs with the finale being on 6-3-2018.  The Mets would also go on to lose to the lowly Orioles on 6-5-2018 by a slime 2-1 score in game 1 of a 3-game set.

For the season, the Mets are averaging 3.98 (25th) with a team batting average of .234 (22nd), 59 homers (25th), along with 25 stolen bases (20th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.17 (17th) with 550 strikeouts (7th) along with 23 quality starts on the season (21st).

Asdrubal Cabrera (.287 BA on 233 AB), and Jay Bruce (.229 BA on 188 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Mets this season.  Amed Rosario (.255 BA on 188 AB) has also been a critical component to the Mets’ scoring attack.

Jacob deGrom (4-0, 72.1 IP, 13 R, 54 H, 3 HR, 21 BB, 98 SO, 1.49 ERA) and Noah Syndergaard (4-1, 64.2 IP, 25 R, 63 H, 5 HR, 13 BB, 76 SO, 3.06 ERA) are the bright spots for their talented pitching staff.

How New York Yankees & NY Mets Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Yankees are 33-24 ATS while the O/U is 32-23-2.  On the other hand, the Mets are 27-31 ATS while the O/U is 26-31-1.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Subway series 2018 will feature a Mets team that has lost their last 5 and 10 of their last 12 games overall against a Yankees team that has been dominant lately in winning 11 of their last 16 outings.  The pitchers for this matchup have not been named, however, the Yankees staff has been lights out allowing only an average of 3.2 runs per game in their last 5 games while the Mets have surrendered an average of just under 5 runs in their last 5 losses.  The Yankees offense, on the other hand, have averaged 5.6 runs per game in their last 5 games while the Mets lineup has only put up an average of 1.4 runs per game in their last 5.  In all, this matchup will be interesting, not to mention a bit one-sided, however, games are played for the purpose of obtaining some type of result.  It is my hope that the Mets can somehow make this matchup one that will be memorable and one in which they can gain confidence moving forward.

Against The Spread Selection: New York Yankees

My reason for the pick :

The Yankees will indeed get the win int his contest.  They are not only the better team, by far, but, they are also clicking on all cylinders at this point in the season.  Besides, they are hot on the heels of the AL East best team in the Boston Red Sox, so, the ramifications of losing to their city rival will be huge.  It is for this reason that they will be focused for game 1 in which to set the tone for the series.  I would also consider the over in this matchup as well.
