Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

NY Yankees vs NY Mets

The finale of a 3-game Subway series between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets will take place on Sunday night at 8:05 pm EST at CitiField in New York, New York.  The Yankees are currently 2nd place within the tough AL East division and have won 7 of their last 8 games while the Mets have had a rough go of it lately in losing their last 6 games and falling to the 4th spot within the NL East division.  This will be the 1st meeting of the year amongst these two squads, however, the Yankees not only swept a 2-game series at Yankee Stadium, but, demolished the Mets in a 2-game set at CitiField on 8-16-2017.

NY Yankees's Latest Performance :

The Yankees have won 4 of their last 5 matchups to where the O/U was 2-3.  Recently, the Yankees would remain hot in winning games 2 and games 3 of a 4-game road set against the struggling Baltimore Orioles with games 1 and 4 being postponed due to weather conditions.  The Yankees would tie the Detroit Tigers in their following series on 6-4-2018 while whipping the Toronto Blue Jays on 6-5-2018 in the opener of a 2-game road set by a score of 7-2.  The Yankees would sweep the series in game 2 by a score of 3-0 at Rodgers Centre on 6-6-2018.

For the season, the Yankees average 5.59 runs per game (1st) with a team batting average of .255 (8th), 98 home runs (1st), along with 30 stolen bases (16th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.64 (11th) with 594 strikeouts (5th), along with 30 quality starts on the season (6th).

Aaron Judge (.274 BA on 219 AB), Didi Gregorius (.242 BA on 211 AB), and Brett Gardner (.262 BA on 206 AB) have been outstanding for the Yankees this year at the plate.  Giancarlo Stanton (.251 BA on 227 AB) and Miguel Andujar (.306 BA on 193 AB) have also been solid at the plate thus far.

On the other hand, Luis Severino (9-1) has pitched 86 innings while allowing 22 runs on 59 hits, 4 homers, 21 walks, and 102 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.20 while  Masahiro Tanaka(7-2) is also an important piece to the Yankee pitching staff as he has pitched 67.2 innings while allowing 38 runs on 59 hits, 15 homers, 18 walks, and 69 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.79.

NY Mets's Latest Performance :

The New York Mets have lost their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-3.  Recently, the Mets would tie a 4-game road set versus the Atlanta Braves on 5-30-2018.  This momentum was not carried into their next series as they were swept in a 4-game home set versus the Chicago Cubs with the finale being on 6-3-2018.  The Mets would also go on to not only lose to the lowly Orioles on 6-5-2018 by a slim 2-1 score, but, they would also drop game 2 by a 1-0 final.  They now get to face a Yankees team that has averaged 5.4 runs per game in their last 5 contests while the pitching staff only allowing only 3 runs per outing during this time.

For the season, the Mets are averaging 3.92 (27th) with a team batting average of .233 (24th), 59 homers (25th), along with 25 stolen bases (21st).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.12 (16th) with 557 strikeouts (7th) along with 24 quality starts on the season (20th).

Asdrubal Cabrera (.286 BA on 227 AB), and Jay Bruce (.224 BA on 192 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Mets this season.  Amed Rosario (.251 BA on 191 AB) has also been a critical component to the Mets’ scoring attack.

Jacob deGrom (4-0, 72.1 IP, 13 R, 54 H, 3 HR, 21 BB, 98 SO, 1.49 ERA) and Noah Syndergaard (4-1, 64.2 IP, 25 R, 63 H, 5 HR, 13 BB, 76 SO, 3.06 ERA) are the bright spots for their talented pitching staff.

How NY Yankees & NY Mets Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Yankees are 34-24 ATS while the O/U is 32-24-2.  On the other hand, the Mets are 27-32 ATS while the O/U is 26-32-1.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Usually, the power hitters for the Yankees have been known to receive the bulk of the headlines, particularly, in a series such as this that has become such a tradition within the New York Metropolitan area; However, the pitching matchup will be the conversation for the finale of this 3-game set on Sunday as Noah Syndergaard (4-1) will make his return to the mound to face off against Yankee ace Luis Severino (9-1).  Syndergaard will be looking to provide a spark for his squad that has been on a damaging losing streak lately while Severino will be looking to continue his solid streak of outings to where he allowed only 12 earned runs in his last 10 starts.

Aside from Todd Frazier (1-3), Brandon Nimmo (1-1), and Asdrubal Cabrera (2-5), the rest of the Mets lineup has struggled against Severino in the past.  On the other hand, Greg Bird (1-3) has had the most success against Syndergaard in the past as it relates to the lineup for the Yanks while Didi Gregorius, Giancarlo Stanton, and Neil Walker are a combined 0-15 against the right-hander in their respective careers.

Totals Selection: Under

My reason for the prediction :

You would have to expect that Syndergaard will certainly be well-rested and ready to shell out a great performance in a very important series against cross-town rival, the Yankees.  On the other hand, Severino is tough to hit as he has shown in his last few starts, and he will also be looking for yet another outstanding performance for his team.  The under has been the play in 4 of Syndergaard’s last 5 games while it has been the result in 6 of the last 9 games for Severino.  In all, while the return of their ace may bring some momentum, I expect the Yankees to shut down this cold Mets offense while the Yankees, despite being on fire offensively, will have to somehow grind out a low-scoring contest in which to get the win in the finale.
