Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
St. Louis Cardinals vs Cincinnati Reds
The Final game between the Reds and the Cardinals as both teams will conclude a 3 game series. The Reds are in the last place of the NL Central while the Cards are in 3rd place. This will be the 3rd meeting between the two teams, the last two meetings the Cards were able to sweep the Reds twice.
St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :
The Cardinals are coming off a series loss against the Marlins as they will look to bounce back on the road. The Cardinals will have short road trip as they will travel to Cincinnati to play the Reds in a three-game series. The Cards are 14-13 on the road this season and only 3 games back for the top spot in the division playing against the Reds would bring them back into the mix for the top spot again, in the last two meetings against the Reds the Cardinals end up winning both series in a sweep they are hoping to sweep the Reds for the 3rd time in a row this season. Coming into this series the Cardinals are 7th best in pitching with a 3.52 ERA on the year, as Miles Mikolas limited the Marlins to an unearned run and three hits over seven innings.
Jose Martinez went 2-for-3 with a home run, it was his first since May 18. Most of Martinez’s production has come in the form of singles and doubles, not homers. He’s batting .311 with a .851 OPS on the season. Expect his numbers to go up as he will be going up against weak pitches thrown by the Reds, he will have to take advantage of bad teams. Matt Carpenter must play well against the Reds on the road he is one of the leaders on the team and is putting up big numbers this season, on the season he is slashing .225/.329/410 with 21 RBIs and 7 homers.
Pitching for the Cardinals will be Carlos Martinez. He will make his second start in a month after returning from the DL. The Cardinals are 2-0 against the Reds this season when he pitches. He threw seven shutout innings against the Reds on April 15.
Cincinnati Reds's Latest Performance :
The Reds are coming off a series loss against the Rockies despite winning the rubber game by a walk-off in the 13th inning with that win the Reds ended a 4 game skid, they will cap off their 6 game homestand by playing against the Cardinals in a 3 game series. The Reds are last in the NL Central with a record of 22-41. They are 10-21 when playing at home this season, one of the main struggles for the Reds this season has been their pitching they are 29th in the Major with a 5.01 ERA on the season.
Jesse Winker went 3-for-3 off the bench and hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 13th. He’s 8-for-16 in his last four games. With the way he is batting he should be getting more playing time, he is too valuable on the Reds bench in these last few games. It was his first walk-off homer in the Major. He is slashing .263/.368/.357 this season, I expect him to play a huge role for the Reds against the Cards at home. Joey Votto led off the 13th inning with the game tied at 5 which led to the Winker homer, Votto is slashing .304/.419/.438 with 25 RBIs with 6 homers.
Pitching for the Reds will be Anthony DeSclafani. He will be making his second start to the season after gave up four runs in five innings Tuesday in a loss to the Rockies. He ended up striking out five and walking one in his debut.
