Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

San Diego Padres vs St. Louis Cardinals

Game 1 of a 3-game set between the visiting San Diego Padres who have been very hot lately, and the St. Luis Cardinals will take place at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri at 8:15 pm EST on Monday night.  The Padres have picked up some wins recently, yet, continue to occupy the last place slot within the NL West division while the Cardinals have been on a bit of a skid lately losing 4 of their last 8 games, yet, continue to occupy 3rd place within the NL Central.  This will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two squads with both teams splitting a 4-game set at PetCo Park earlier in the year.

San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :

The Padres come into this matchup winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U has been 3-2.  Recently, the Padres would win a 3-game home series with the Cincinnati Reds on 6-3-2018.  They would also take this momentum into a 3-game home set versus the Atlanta Braves which they would win with the finale on 6-6-2018 being a 3-1 win for the Padres.  This momentum would not translate into their next 3-game road set against the Marlins as they dropped game 1 by a 4-0 score on 6-8-2018.

For the season, San Diego averages 3.95 runs per game (25th) with a team batting average of .233 (25th), 58 homers (26th) and 38 stolen bases on the year (7th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.28 (19th) with 548 strikeouts (9th) and 21 quality starts thus far (24th).

Jose Pirela (.275 BA on 244 AB), Eric Hosmer (.285 BA on 228 AB), and Freddy Galvis (.235 BA on 226 AB) have been the few bright spots for this San Diego squad.

Tyson Ross (5-3) has pitched 70.2 innings while allowing 28 runs on 60 hits, 6 homers, 26 walks, and 71 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.31 has also been solid at the mound.  Clayton Richard (4-6) has been improving for the Padres this season and has pitched 81 innings while allowing 43 runs on 78 hits, 9 homers, 27 walks, and 66 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.67.

St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :

The Cardinals have won 3 of their last 5 games where the O/U was 3-2.  Recently, after a 3-game road series loss to the Brewers on 5-30-2018, the Cards would win a 4-game home set versus the Pittsburgh Pirates on 6-3-2018.  The Cardinals then went on to lose a 3-game home set against the lowly Miami Marlins on 6-7-2018, yet, got back into the win column with a 7-6 win versus the Reds on the road on 6-7-2018.

For the season, the Cardinals are averaging 4.29 runs per game (14th) with a team batting average of .238 (20th), 58 homers (12th), along with 23 stolen bases (19th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.51 (8th) with 407 strikeouts (22nd) and 23 quality starts on the year (9th).

Tommy Pham (.292 BA on 154 AB), Jose Martinez (.306 BA on 173 AB), Paul DeJong (.260 BA on 150 AB), and Yadier Molina (.272 BA on 114 AB) have been the most consistent batters at the plate for St. Louis this season.  Marcell Ozuna (.260 BA on 181 AB) has also been solid at the plate for the Cardinals this year.

Carlos Martinez (3-2) has pitched 50 innings this year while allowing 12 runs on 32 hits, 1 homer, 22 walks, and 47 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.62 while Miles Mikolas (7-0) has pitched 60.1 innings and allowing 16 runs on 53 hits, 6 homers, 6 walks, and 46 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.24.  Michael Wacha (5-1) has 54.1 IP, 21 R, 48 H, 4 HR, 21 BB, and 50 SO along with an ERA of 2.88.

How San Diego Padres & St. Louis Cardinals Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Padres are 33-32 ATS while the O/U is 32-31-4.  On the other hand, the Cardinals are 26-35 ATS while the O/U is 23-33-5.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The Cards had a terrible series versus the Marlins, yet, will certainly bring the focus as the Padres come to town sporting a winning streak with a healthy amount of confidence.  Coming to the mound to get the Cardinals back on track will be Jack Flaherty (2-2) who is coming off a disastrous outing in which he pitched 6 runs on 8 hits, 2 walks, 1 homer, and 6 strikeouts in an 11-3 home loss versus the Miami Marlins on 6-6-2018.  Interestingly enough, before this outing, Flaherty had only allowed 7 runs on 18 hits in his 4 prior starts which could very well say that he simply had a bad night.  Speaking of having a bad night, Jordan Lyles (2-2) will come to the mound for the Padres looking to put behind him an outing in which he gave up 8 runs on 11 hits in only 4.1 innings of work in a 14-1 home loss to the Braves on 6-5-2018.  Lyles has given up multi-hit homer in 3 of his last 4 starts.

Yadier Molina (.429 BA on 7 AB), Marcell Ozuna (.400 BA on 5 AB), Tommy Pham (.500 BA on 2 AB), Dexter Fowler (.250 BA on 4 AB), and Harrison Bader (.500 BA on 2 AB) have had the most experience and success against Lyles in the past.  On the other hand, matt Carpenter (.200 on 5 AB) and Jedd Gyroko (.167 BA on 6 AB) has had less success against Lyles in their careers.  On the other hand, Flaherty has not had much experience facing the lineup for San Diego, however, he has faced Jose Pirela (0-2) and Matt Szczur (0-2) in this career.

Against The Spread Selection: San Diego Padres

My reason for the pick :

I am not sure how long, or if it will last, however, the Padres are beginning to play like winnings.  They have won 7 of their last 9 games and look to obtain even more confidence on Monday against the Cards.  St. Louis, on the other hand, has been up and down lately losing 2 of their last 3 games, yet, Flaherty, despite his last outing, has been very solid for the Cardinals all year long.  I expect this to continue on Monday as the Cardinals will pull out a defensive masterpiece against the red-hot Padres in game 1 at Busch Field.  Besides, Lyles has not only been terrible recently, but, has been dominated by the Cardinals lineup in his career.  In all, I will back St. Louis to get the hard-fought victory at home on Monday night.
