Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Toronto Blue Jays vs Tampa Bay Rays

Game 1 of a 3-game set between the struggling Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays will take place at Tropicana Field in Tampa, Florida, on Monday night at 7:10 pm EST.  The Jays have indeed struggled this year and are now losers of 14 of their last 19 games, yet, occupy the 4th spot in the division.  The Rays have been reeling as well losing their last 7 games while occupying the 3rd place slot within the AL East division.  This will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two squads with the Rays taking 2 of 3 earlier in the season.

Toronto Blue Jays's Latest Performance :

The Blue Jays are winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4.  Recently, Toronto would be swept in a 3-game road set versus the Boston Red Sox on 5-30-2018 as the Jays were outscored 22-10 during the series.  On 6-3-2018, the Jays lost yet another series, this against the surging Detroit Tigers on the road.  Furthermore, the Jays were swept once again in a short, 2-game home set versus the dangerous NY Yankees on 6-6-2018.  Nonetheless, the Jays have indeed recovered against AL East basement team Baltimore Orioles in taking 2 of 4 game already with game 2 being a 5-1 victory.

For the season, the Toronto Blue Jays are averaging 4.53 runs per game (9th) with a team batting average of .227 (29th), 75 homers (8th) along with 22 stolen bases (24th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.80 (25th) with 500 strikeouts (18th) along with 20 quality starts on the season (26th).

Kevin Pillar (.260 BA on 223 AB), Justin Smoak (.254 BA on 193 AB), and Yangervis Solarte (.257 BA on 222 AB) have been the offensive spearheads for the Toronto Blue Jays this season.

Pitcher JA Happ (7-3, 70.2 IP, 34 R, 60 H, 10 HR, 20 BB, 87 SO with an ERA of 4.08) has been the most consistent pitcher for the Blue Jay’s bullpen this year.  Aaron Sanchez (3-5, 66.1 IP, 36 R, 61 H, 8 HR, 38 BB, 50 SO with an ERA of 4.48) has also been a pivotal piece to the rotation, despite his lackluster performances this season.

Tampa Bay Rays 's Latest Performance :

The Tampa Bay Rays have lost their last 8 games to where the O/U was 3-5.  Recently, the Rays would win a 4-game road set against the Oakland Athletics on 5-31-2018, but, would get swept in a 3-game road set versus the Mariners on 6-3-2018.  In addition to this, they would also get swept by division foe Washington Nationals on the road on 6-6-2018 while also bombing in the first 2 games of what will be a 4-game home set versus the Mariners, once again, in what should be another exciting series.

The Rays are averaging 4.10 runs per game (21st) with a team batting average of .257 (7th), 56 homers (26th), along with 35 stolen bases on the year (10th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.91 (15th) with 492 strikeouts (17th) and 18 quality starts (28th).

Mallex Smith (.269 BA on 175 AB), Joey Wendle (.283 BA on 159 AB) Adeiny Hechavarria (.273 BA on 132 AB) spearhead the offensive attack from the plate for the O’s while C.J. Cron (.264 BA on 227 AB), Matt Duffy (.308 BA on 172 AB), and Denard Span (.238 BA on 143 AB) are also critical to the Baltimore offense.

Blake Snell (7-3) has pitched 76.1 innings this season and allowed 21 runs on 49 hits, 8 homers, 23 walks, and 88 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.36.  Chris Archer (3-4) has pitched 76.1 while allowing 37 runs on 76 hits, 9 homers, 26 walks, 76 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.24 for the season.

How Toronto Blue Jays & Tampa Bay Rays Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Rays are 33-29 ATS while the O/U is 28-31-3.  On the other hand, the Blue Jays are 31-32 ATS while the O/U is 29-28-6.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This matchup will be interesting in that you have 2 teams that are badly in need of a win (or set of wins) in which to gain some confidence and momentum in which to build from moving forward.  Sam Gaviglio (2-1) will come to the mound for the Blue Jays looking to build from his last outing where he pitched 7 innings while allowing 0 runs on 3 hits in a 3-0 tough luck loss to the red-hot New York Yankees on 6-6-2018.   While Gaviglio does not have much experience against the lineup for the Rays, he has faced Rob Refsnyder (0-1) and Daniel Robertson (1-2) in the past.

Totals Selection: Under

My reason for the prediction :

Gaviglio has really provided a spark for the Toronto Blue Jays lately and I expect this to continue as he will certainly allow the Blue Jays the opportunity to get a win on Monday night.  In fact, the under for the right-hander has been the play in 3 of his last 6 starts while it has also been the result in 4 of the last 6 games for both the Blue Jays and the Rays.  I expect this trend to continue in that the Rays offense is struggling mightily averaging only 2 runs per game average in their last 5 games while the Blue Jays are averaging 3.8 runs per game during their last 5 outings.
