Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Chicago Cubs vs Milwaukee Brewers

Game 2 of a 3-game set between the visiting Chicago Cubs and the Milwaukee Brewers will take place at Miller Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Tuesday night at 8:10 pm EST.  The Cubs have continued their winning ways while continuing to occupy 2nd place within the NL Central while the Brewers have lost 5 of their last 8 games, yet, continue to occupy the top spot in the NL Central at the time.  This will be the 3rd matchup of the year amongst these squads, however, the Cubs have dominated the series in winning 6 of the last 7 games including winning a 4-game set at Miller Field on 4-8-2018.

Chicago Cubs's Latest Performance :

The Brewers have lost 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-3.  Recently, the Brewers would drop a 3-game road set to the lowly White Sox on 6-3-2018 while taking yet another step back by getting swept by the Cleveland Indians in a 2-game set at Progressive Field on 6-6-2018.  They would, however, recover in the first 2 games of a 3-game road set versus the slumping Phillies by outscoring them 24 to 7 for the series thus far.

For the season, the Brewers are averaging 4.39 runs per game (14th) with a team batting average of .250 (13th), 81 homers (5th), and 42 stolen bases on the year (5th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.52 (6th) with 547 strikeouts (15th), along with 17 quality starts (29th).

Lorenzo Cain (.281 BA on 224 AB), Ryan Braun (.242 BA on 165 AB), Travis Shaw (.248 BA on 222 AB), and Domingo Santana (.254 BA on 177 AB) have been the most consistent offensive weapons for the Brewers this season.

Jhoulys Chacin (5-1, 75.1 IP, 33 R, 64 H, 6 HR, 30 BB, 57 SO, 3.58 ERA) has been a bright spot for this Brewer pitching staff this season.

Milwaukee Brewers 's Latest Performance :

The Cubs come into this game winners of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4.  Recently, the Cubs would sweep the reeling New York Mets in a 4-game series on 6-3-2018 while also going on to win a 3-game home set versus the Philadelphia Phillies by winning game 3 on 6-7-2018 by a 4-3 score. They would also go on to win the first 2 games of a 3-game home set versus the Pirates at Wrigley Field outscoring Pittsburgh 5 to 1 for the series.

For the season, the Cubs are averaging 5.08 runs per game (3rd) with a team batting average of .264 (3rd), 66 homers (20th) along with 27 stolen bases (18th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.15 (2nd) with 540 strikeouts (16th) with 27 quality starts on the season, good for 16th in the MLB.

Kris Bryant (.298 BA on 216 AB), Kyle Schwarber (.253 BA on 174 AB), and Javier Baez (.254 BA on 224 AB) have spearheaded the Cubs offensive attack this year.  Wilson Contreras has also been critical to the scoring attack with a batting average of .281 on 203 at bats.

Jon Lester (7-2) has been solid this year pitching 77 innings while allowing 23 runs on 57 hits, 8 homer, 27 walks, and 66 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.22 while Kyle Hendricks (4-5) has pitched 72.2 innings while allowing 31 runs on 63 hits, 12 homers, 17 walks, and 57 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.59 for the season.  Jose Quintana (6-4) has pitched 64.1 innings while allowing 33 runs on 57 hits, 8 homers, 31 walks, and 67 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.20.

How Chicago Cubs & Milwaukee Brewers Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Brewers are 38-26 ATS while the O/U is 25-37-2.  On the other hand, the Cubs are 33-28 ATS while the O/U is 25-34-2.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The Brewers have certainly lost the momentum that they carried for nearly 3 weeks when they were winners of 15 of 23 games.  They have since been losers of 5 of their last 8 which could not come at a worse time as the talented Cubs have begun to heat up, thus threatening the Brewers’ spot within the division.  It would be important to note that before their 12-4 and 12-3 wins on the road against the Phillies, the Brewers’ offense averaged just 2.4 runs per game.  It is for this reason that it will be interesting to see how the Brew Crew performs at the plate with Tyler Chatwood (3-4) manning the mound for game 2.  Chatwood has been solid in his last 5 starts surrendering an average of 2.2 runs per game, yet, the over has been the play in 3 of his last 4 outings.

Jonathan Villar and Christian Yelich are both 2-4 in their careers against Chatwood while Orlando Arcia, Hernan Perez, and Travis Shaw are each 1-3 against the right-hander.  Ryan Braun (1-2), Manny Pina (0-3), and Eric Sogard (0-1) have not had much success (if any) against Chatwood in their respective careers.

Against The Spread Selection: Chicago Cubs

My reason for the pick :

Again, the Cubs have dominated this series in recent matchups and when combined with the fact that the Cubs are simply playing great baseball at this time, I certainly see this matchup in game 2 as an opportunity for the Cubs to set the tone even more in this series.  Chatwood has played well at the mound in his last few starts and should really serve to confuse the anemic offense for the Brewers in which to allow Chicago to wear down the opposing pitchers and grind out some runs.  In all, the Brewers should enjoy their position in the division while they can as the Cubs will certainly perform well in this series as they have recently exhibited that they understand the importance of winning consistently at the mound along with at the plate.
