Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Pittsburgh Pirates vs Arizona Diamondbacks
Game 2 of a 3-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Arizona Diamondbacks will take place at Chase Field in Phoenix Arizona on Tuesday night at 9:40 pm EST. The Pirates currently occupy 4th place within the NL Central division while the Diamondbacks have reclaimed the number 1 slot in the NL West from the Colorado Rockies in winning 8 of their last 11 games. With this string of victories, the D’backs hope to gain even more momentum and confidence moving forward. In all, this will be the 1st meeting of the year amongst these two squads, however, both teams have split the past 4 games at Chase Field last year.
Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :
The Pittsburgh Pirates have lost 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-3. Recently, the Pirates would lose to the Cardinals in a 4-game home set on 6-3-2018 while also falling in a 3-game home set versus the Los Angeles Dodgers on 6-7-2018 by an 8-7 score in the finale. Things did not get any better for the Pirates as they also lost games 1 and 2 of a 3-game road set versus the Chicago Cubs with game 2 being a slim 2-0 victory for Chicago.
For the season, the Pittsburgh Pirates average 4.53 runs per game (8th) with a team batting average of .252 (11th), 66 homers (21st) along with 24 stolen bases (24th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.25 (20th) with 523 strikeouts (20th) along with 28 quality starts on the year (13th).
Corey Dickerson (.321 BA on 224 AB), Francisco Cervelli (.266 BA on 158 AB), Starling Marte (.280 BA on 207 AB), and Colin Moran (.277 BA on 173 AB) have been the most consistent hitters in the lineup for the Pirates this year. Jordy Mercer (.250 BA on 196 AB) and Josh Bell (.233 BA on 227 AB) have also been solid for Pittsburgh this year at the plate.
Trevor Williams (5-3, 71 IP, 33 R, 64 H, 8 HR, 24 BB, 49 SO, 4.18 ERA) and Ivan Nova (2-5, 61.2 IP, 39 R, 73 H, 10 HR, 10 BB, 42 SO, 4.96 ERA) have shined on the mound for the Pirates, at times, this year.
Arizona Diamondbacks's Latest Performance :
The Arizona Diamondbacks have won 3 of their last 5 game to where the O/U was 4-1. Recently, the D’backs would sweep a 3-game home set versus the Miami Marlins on 6-3-2018 while dropping the following series versus the San Francisco Giants due to a 5-4 road loss on 6-6-2018. They would recover on the road against the Colorado Rockies by winning games 1 and 2 of a 3-game set by outscoring the Rockies 21-11 so far.
For the season, the D’backs average 4.14 runs per game (23rd) with a team batting average of .222 (30th), 72 homers (15th) along with 38 stolen bases (8th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.43 (4th) with 549 strikeouts (14th) along with 29 quality starts for the season (9th).
David Peralta (.276 BA on 225 AB) and A.J. Pollock (.293 BA on 150 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Diamondbacks thus far. Paul Goldschmidt (.250 BA on 228 AB) and Nick Ahmed (.221 BA on 199 AB) have also been solid offensively for Arizona this season.

How Pittsburgh Pirates & Arizona Diamondbacks Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Pirates are 28-36 ATS while the O/U is 30-28-6. On the other hand, the Diamondbacks are 33-30 ATS while the O/U is 30-31-2.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
While the pitchers for this matchup have not been named, it would be important to note first that the Pirate offense has struggled recently. In their last 6 games, Pittsburgh has averaged 3.5 runs per game while the D’backs pitching staff has been surrendering an average of 3.6 runs per game in their last 6. In all, the D’backs continue their attempt to fully erect themselves from a rough patch recently, however, regaining the top spot in the NL West should certainly provide some added motivation for this matchup. The Pirates are 2-6 in their last 8 road games while the O/U was 2-5; On the other hand, the D’backs are 5-2 in their last 7 home games while the O/U was 5-3. It will be interesting to see if the D’backs can keep their footing against a team that they should dominate on Tuesday night. Nonetheless, history has shown that Arizona does indeed go through lapses at times where they are not only inconsistent on offense, but, at the mound as well.
Totals Selection: Under
My reason for the prediction :
With 2 struggling offenses, I will back the under in this game 2 contest on Tuesday. The fact is that both lineups have been too up and down (mostly down) lately; Nonetheless, this will be the type of game to where the D’backs will certainly have the momentum due to home field, where they are 19-13 for the year, as well as from a momentum standpoint in that Arizona has been playing much better baseball lately, altogether. I expect this to be a low-scoring, yet, interesting game to watch, however, I also do not see very many runs being scored at all in game 2 primarily due to consistently cold offenses for both squads.
