Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Toronto Blue Jays vs Tampa Bay Rays

Game 2 of a 3-game set between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays will take place at Tropicana Field in Tampa, Florida, on Tuesday night at 7:10 pm EST.  The Rays have indeed struggled this year and were losers of 8 straight games until a 7-3 home win against the AL West top team in the Seattle Marlins on 6-9-2018.  Nonetheless, they continue to occupy the 5th place spot within the division.  The Jays have been reeling as well losing 7 of their last 11 games, however, thanks to the Orioles, the Jays have dominated them in a 4-game home set at Rodgers Centre allowing them to win 3-straight games.  The Blue Jays now occupy the 4th place slot within the AL East division.  This will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two squads with the Rays taking 2 of 3 earlier in the season.

Toronto Blue Jays 's Latest Performance :

The Blue Jays are winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 0-5.  On 6-3-2018, the Jays lost yet another series, this against the surging Detroit Tigers on the road.  Furthermore, the Jays were swept once again in a short, 2-game home set versus the dangerous NY Yankees on 6-6-2018.  Nonetheless, the Jays have indeed recovered against AL East basement team Baltimore Orioles in taking 3 of 4 games with game 3 being a slim 4-3 victory.

For the season, the Toronto Blue Jays are averaging 4.47 runs per game (10th) with a team batting average of .230 (27th), 80 homers (7th) along with 23 stolen bases (25th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.59 (23rd) with 533 strikeouts (18th) along with 24 quality starts on the season (23rd).

Kevin Pillar (.264 BA on 239 AB), Justin Smoak (.240 BA on 208 AB), and Yangervis Solarte (.249 BA on 241 AB) have been the offensive spearheads for the Toronto Blue Jays this season.

Pitcher JA Happ (8-3, 77.2 IP, 35 R, 62 H, 10 HR, 22 BB, 90 SO with an ERA of 3.71) has been the most consistent pitcher for the Blue Jay’s bullpen this year.  Aaron Sanchez (3-5, 72.2 IP, 38 R, 67 H, 8 HR, 42 BB, 58 SO with an ERA of 4.33) has also been a pivotal piece to the rotation, despite his lackluster performances this season.

Tampa Bay Rays's Latest Performance :

The Tampa Bay Rays have lost 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2.  Recently, the Rays would win a 4-game road set against the Oakland Athletics on 5-31-2018, but, would get swept in a 3-game road set versus the Mariners on 6-3-2018.  In addition to this, they would also get swept by division foe Washington Nationals on the road on 6-6-2018.  They would tie a 4-game home set versus the Seattle Mariners on 6-9-2018 by picking up a huge 7-3 victory to have a chance at the tie.

The Rays are averaging 4.06 runs per game (24th) with a team batting average of .256 (7th), 60 homers (26th), along with 35 stolen bases on the year (11th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.99 (15th) with 529 strikeouts (19th) and 19 quality starts (27th).

Mallex Smith (.281 BA on 192 AB), Joey Wendle (.276 BA on 174 AB) Adeiny Hechavarria (.273 BA on 132 AB) spearhead the offensive attack from the plate for the O’s while C.J. Cron (.257 BA on 241 AB), Matt Duffy (.319 BA on 191 AB), and Denard Span (.238 BA on 143 AB) are also critical to the Baltimore offense.

Blake Snell (8-3) has pitched 82.1 innings this season and allowed 23 runs on 56 hits, 9 homers, 25 walks, and 89 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.30.  Chris Archer (3-4) has pitched 76.1 while allowing 37 runs on 76 hits, 9 homers, 26 walks, 76 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.24 for the season.

How Toronto Blue Jays & Tampa Bay Rays Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Rays are 34-29 ATS while the O/U is 29-31-3.  On the other hand, the Blue Jays are 31-33 ATS while the O/U is 29-29-6.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This matchup will be interesting in that you have two teams that are struggling mightily to get some wins under their belt in which to gain some confidence and momentum moving forward into the season.  On one hand, the Rays have stunk lately losing 17 of 25 games, overall, while having been swept in their last 2 series.  In addition to this, the Rays dropped the first 2 games of a 4-game home set against the red-hot Mariners before picking up the 7-3 victory on Saturday in game 3.  Toronto, on the other hand, has also struggled all year yet picked up some much-needed momentum in having won their last 3 outings.  For game 2, Jaime Garcia (2-4) will come to the mound hoping to build from his last outing to which he received the no-decision.  Against the Orioles on 6-7-2018, he pitched 6 innings while allowing 1 run on 4 hits, 3 walks, and 6 strikeouts in a 5-4 home win.  The under has been the play in 4 of Garcia’s 5 starts.  Carlos Gomez (.571 BA on 14 AB) and C.J. Cron (.333 BA on 3 AB) have the most success and experience against Garcia in the past.  Matt Duffy is .167 on 6 at bats while Christian Arroyo, Wilson Ramos, and Jesus Sucre are a combined 0-8 against the left-hander in their careers.

Against The Spread Selection: Toronto Blue Jays

My reason for the pick :

Though both teams continue to struggle in 2018, I feel as if the Blue Jays most certainly have the momentum going into game 2.  They have won 3-straight, as stated, and with Jaime Garcia coming to the mound, they certainly have an advantage when looking at his history against the Rays’ lineup.  While Toronto is hard to call, I continue to believe that they will squeak by the Rays on the road in this contest simply because the Rays continue to struggle, particularly at home where they are only 12-15 for the year.  While the Blue Jays have not been fantastic away from Rodgers Centre (14-16), they should have just enough to win game 2 of this matchup on Tuesday night while essentially taking control of this series.
