Houston Astros vs Oakland Athletics
The finale of a 3-game set against the visiting Houston Astros and the Oakland Athletics will take place at Oakland Alameda Coliseum in Oakland, California, on Thursday afternoon at 3:35 pm EST. The Astros are currently in 2nd place within the NL West while the A’s remain in the 4th place slot within the division. This will be the 3rd matchup of the season amongst these two teams with the Astros dominated the A’s in the past winning 5 of their last 6 games while sweeping a 3-game set at Oakland Alameda on 5-9-2018.
Houston Astros's Latest Performance :
The Houston Astros have won 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2. Recently, the Astros would tie a 4-game home set versus the potent Boston Red Sox on 6-3-2018 while following this set up with yet another tie in a 2-game home set versus the Mariners on 6-6-2018. The Astros would come out strong in the next series by sweeping the Texas Rangers on the road in a 4-game set on 6-10-2018.
For the season, Houston is averaging 4.97 runs per game (4th) with a team batting average of .260 (5th), 79 homers (10th), along with 35 stolen bases on the year (12th). Their pitching staff ranks lowest in MLB stats with an ERA of 2.93 (1st) with 689 strikeouts (1st) along with 49 quality starts (1st).
Jose Altuve (.342 BA on 272 AB), Carlos Correa (.264 BA on 220 AB), Josh Reddick (222 BA on 144 AB), and Alex Bregman (.266 BA on 248 AB) has spearheaded the Astros offense throughout the year. George Springer (.295 BA on 261 AB) has also been a solid contributor for the Astros at the plate.
Charlie Morton (7-1) has been consistent this year for Houston pitching 76.2 innings while allowing only 26 runs on 57 hits, 11 homers, 29 walks, and 96 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.82 while Justin Verlander (8-2) has pitched 93.1 innings thus far while allowing 17 runs on 51 hits, 6 homers, 20 walks, and 113 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.45. Lance McCullers (7-3) has also been solid as he has pitched 75.1 innings while allowing 33 runs on 35 hits, 8 homers, 25 walks, 76 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.94.
Oakland Athletics's Latest Performance :
The Oakland Athletics have won 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4. Recently, the A’s would win a 3-game road set versus the Royals as they took the series in game 3 by a score of 5-1 on 6-3-2018. They would, however, drop a 2-game set against the Texas Rangers on 6-6-2018 by an 8-2 final in game 2. Nonetheless, the A’s would, once again, come out strong in a 4-game home series versus the Royals while picking up the series victory on 6-10-2018.
For the season, the Athletics are averaging 4.38 runs per game (12th) with a team batting average of .242 (19th), 82 homers (8th), along with 12 stolen bases (30th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.87 (14th) with 488 strikeouts (28th) along with 30 quality starts on the season (9th).
Jed Lowrie (.285 BA on 253 AB), Stephen Piscotty (.239 BA on 201 AB), Marcus Semien (.260 BA on 269 AB), and Matt Chapman (.245 BA on 230 AB) have been the offensive leaders for the Athletics this year while Matt Olson (.250 BA on 236 AB) and Khris Davis (.237 B on 219 AB) have also been critical components to the offense for Oakland.
The 2 most impressive pitchers on Oakland’s staff is Sean Manaea (5-6, 87.2 IP, 37 R, 69 H, 13 HR, 18 BB, 64 SO, 3.45 ERA) and Daniel Mengden (6-5, 78.1 IP, 34 R, 69 H, 10 HR, 11 BB, 51 SO, 3.45 ERA) as they have proven themselves to be the most consistent of the bunch.
How Houston Astros & Oakland Athletics Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Astros are 36-31 ATS while the O/U is 28-35-4. On the other hand, the Athletics are 30-36 ATS while the O/U is 29-32-5.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The big guns will certainly be on the mound for both teams as Justin Verlander (8-2) and Frankie Montas (3-0) will get the start as they both look to continue their stellar brand of pitching that has been on display recently. Verlander will be going for his 5th win in 6 starts and has only been charged with 7 runs on 21 hits in his last 4 starts while Montas will attempt to win his 4th straight start as he has been equally as efficient in only being charged with 3 earned runs on 16 hits in his last 3 starts.
Khris Davis (1-3), Jonathan Lucroy (1-3), and Marcus Semien (.333 BA on 12 AB) have had the most success and experience against Verlander in the past; However, Jed Lowrie (.167 BA on 12 AB) and Josh Phegley (.167 BA on 6 AB) have not fared as well against the righty in their careers. On the other hand, Montas has not had much experience versus this potent lineup for the Astros, however, Jose Altuve (1-1), Carlos Correa (1-1), Brian McCann (1-1) and Marwin Gonzales (1-2) have all had success against the right-hander in recent meetings. Evan Gattis and Josh Reddick are a combined 0-2 against Montas.
Against The Spread Selection: Houston Astros
My reason for the pick :
Houston is slowly gaining more momentum after their recent streak which saw them lose 7 of 10 games. With Verlander coming to the mound, one can be assured that he will provide the Stros with enough potency at the mound in which to allow the offense to get some runs in during the finale. Again, Montas has pitched well, however, he is very inexperienced as far as facing this Houston lineup. Furthermore, many of the big-time batters for Houston have been effective against him in recent outings. It is for this reason that I expect the Astros to pick up yet another victory when it is all said and done on Thursday.
