Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

San Diego Padres vs Atlanta Braves

Game 1 of a 4-game set versus the visiting San Diego Padres and the Atlanta Braves will begin on Thursday night at 7:35 pm EST at SunTrust Park in Atlanta, Georgia.  The Padres are in 5th place within the NL West division while the Atlanta Braves now occupy 2nd place in the NL East division after they relinquished the top spot in the NL East division to the Washington Nationals after a shaky couple of outings recently which saw them lose 5 of their last 8.  This will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two teams as the Padres won a 4-game set at PetCo Park earlier in the year.

San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :

The Padres come into this matchup winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U has been 1-4.  Recently, the Padres would win a 3-game home set versus the Atlanta Braves to which they would win the finale on 6-6-2018 by a score of 3-1.  This momentum would translate into their next series as they would pick up the 3-1 road win in the finale against the Miami Marlins on 6-10-2018.  They did, however, suffer a 5-2 loss on the road in game 1 of a 3-game road set versus the St. Louis Cardinals on 6-11-2018.

For the season, San Diego averages 3.87 runs per game (25th) with a team batting average of .233 (25th), 61 homers (27th) and 40 stolen bases on the year (9th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.23 (19th) with 580 strikeouts (9th) and 22 quality starts thus far (24th).

Jose Pirela (.275 BA on 258 AB), Eric Hosmer (.287 BA on 244 AB), and Freddy Galvis (.230 BA on 235 AB) have been the few bright spots for this San Diego squad.

Tyson Ross (5-3) has pitched 76 innings while allowing 32 runs on 66 hits, 7 homers, 28 walks, and 78 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.43 has also been solid at the mound.  Clayton Richard (5-6) has been improving for the Padres this season and has pitched 88 innings while allowing 44 runs on 80 hits, 9 homers, 30 walks, and 71 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.40.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

The Braves come into this game losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U is 4-1.   Recently, the Braves were impressive in a 4-game home series win against the Washington Nationals on 6-3-2018 which would essentially propel them to 1st place within the NL East; However, they were quickly bought back to earth by the Padres as the Braves would fall in defeat in a 3-game road set at PetCo Park on 6-6-2018.  They were never able to regain their footing and would lose yet another 3-game road set to the Dodgers on 6-10-2018.

For the season, the Braves are averaging 4.95 runs per game (5th) with a team batting average of .261 (4th), 76 homers (15th) along with 40 stolen bases (8th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.68 (10th) with 579 strikeouts (10th) along with 27 quality starts on the season (16th).

Freddie Freeman (.340 BA on 250 AB), Nick Markakis (.327 BA on 260 AB), Ryan Flaherty (.267 BA on 120 AB), and Ozzie Albies (.256 BA on 281 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Braves all season.  Dansby Swanson (.266 BA on 192 AB) and Ender Incarte (.240 BA on 258 AB) have also been consistent at the plate for the Braves.

Mike Foltynewicz (5-4, 74 IP, 23 R, 55 H, 5 HR, 33 BB, 88 SO, 2.31 ERA) and Brandon McCarthy (5-3, 68 IP, 40 R, 81 H, 12 HR, 20 BB, 56 SO, 5.03 ERA) have been bright spots on the mound for the Braves this year.  Sean Newcomb (7-2, 74 IP, 27 R, 56 H, 5 HR, 35 BB, 74 SO, 2.92 ERA) and Julio Teheran (4-4, 71 IP, 34 R, 57 H, 14 HR, 33 BB, 56 SO, 4.31 ERA have also been solid for Atlanta in 2018.

How San Diego Padres & Atlanta Braves Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Braves are 35-30 ATS while the O/U is 31-31-3.  On the other hand, the Padres are 34-34 ATS while the O/U is 33-33-2.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Can the Braves somehow gain some payback after their terrible series at PetCo Park?  We shall see in this opening matchup if Atlanta can indeed obtain this objective while also attempting to set the tone for the series, altogether.  The Padres have won 9 of their last 13 games but have yet to make any noise in their respective division as it relates to positioning.  The Braves, on the other hand, continue to chase the Nationals in the NL East, yet, have played a bit inconsistent lately.  Still, Atlanta has won 14 of their last 23 games, overall.  The pitchers for both teams have not been announced, however, the Braves’ staff has allowed 21 runs in their last 5 games while the Padres have surrendered 24 runs in their last 5 with 14 runs coming in a 14-1 loss to the Braves on 6-5-2018 in San Diego.

Totals Selection: Under

My reason for the prediction :

With so much on the line for this series, I feel as if the Braves along with the Padres will be focused in getting the all-important victory in the opener.  While the Braves’ pitching had seemingly taken a step back recently in allowing over 4 runs per game, I feel as if they will certainly hunker down and provide a great performance in this series, beginning with game 1.  The Padres pitching staff has been one of the major components that hold this San Diego team together.  In other words, their staff is known for its solid pitching on a night in and night out basis.  In the Padres recent winning streak, the Padres have surrendered 50 runs in their last 12 games, though.  Again, 14 of those runs were in a 13-point demolishing at the hands of the Braves earlier at PetCo.
