Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

San Diego Padres vs Atlanta Braves

Game 2 of a 4-game set versus the visiting San Diego Padres and the Atlanta Braves will resume on Friday night at 7:35 pm EST at SunTrust Park in Atlanta, Georgia.  The Padres are in 5th place within the NL West division while the Atlanta Braves now occupy 1st place in the NL East division primarily due to the recent inconsistent play from the Nationals.  This will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two teams as the Padres won a 4-game set at PetCo Park earlier in the year.

San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :

The Padres come into this matchup winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U has been 1-4.  Recently, the Padres would win a 3-game home set versus the Atlanta Braves to which they would win the finale on 6-6-2018 by a score of 3-1.  This momentum would translate into their next series as they would pick up the 3-1 road win in the finale against the Miami Marlins on 6-10-2018 to get yet another series win.  They also picked up a 4-2 win on the road in game 2 of a 3-game road set versus the St. Louis Cardinals on 6-12-2018 to tie the series at 1 apiece.

For the season, San Diego averages 3.87 runs per game (25th) with a team batting average of .232 (25th), 62 homers (27th) and 40 stolen bases on the year (9th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.20 (19th) with 589 strikeouts (10th) and 22 quality starts thus far (25th).

Jose Pirela (.275 BA on 262 AB), Eric Hosmer (.286 BA on 248 AB), and Freddy Galvis (.230 BA on 243 AB) have been the few bright spots for this San Diego squad.

Tyson Ross (5-3) has pitched 76 innings while allowing 32 runs on 66 hits, 7 homers, 28 walks, and 78 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.43 has also been solid at the mound.  Clayton Richard (5-6) has been improving for the Padres this season and has pitched 88 innings while allowing 44 runs on 80 hits, 9 homers, 30 walks, and 71 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.40.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

The Braves come into this game losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U is 4-1.   Recently, the Braves were impressive in a 4-game home series win against the Washington Nationals on 6-3-2018 which would essentially propel them to 1st place within the NL East; However, they were quickly bought back to earth by the Padres as the Braves would fall in defeat in a 3-game road set at PetCo Park on 6-6-2018.  They were never able to regain their footing and would lose yet another 3-game road set to the Dodgers on 6-10-2018 which allowed the Nats to retake the top spot in the NL East once again.  Nonetheless, they came out strong in game 1 of a 2-game home set versus the struggling Mets to pick up the 8-2 victory on 6-12-2018.

For the season, the Braves are averaging 5.00 runs per game (3rd) with a team batting average of .261 (3rd), 78 homers (13th) along with 42 stolen bases (6th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.64 (9th) with 589 strikeouts (8th) along with 27 quality starts on the season (16th).

Freddie Freeman (.341 BA on 252 AB), Nick Markakis (.333 BA on 264 AB), Ryan Flaherty (.264 BA on 121 AB), and Ozzie Albies (.255 BA on 286 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Braves all season.  Dansby Swanson (.265 BA on 196 AB) and Ender Incarte (.244 BA on 262 AB) have also been consistent at the plate for the Braves.

Mike Foltynewicz (5-4, 79 IP, 23 R, 57 H, 5 HR, 33 BB, 93 SO, 2.16 ERA) and Brandon McCarthy (5-3, 68 IP, 40 R, 81 H, 12 HR, 20 BB, 56 SO, 5.03 ERA) have been bright spots on the mound for the Braves this year.  Sean Newcomb (7-2, 74 IP, 27 R, 56 H, 5 HR, 35 BB, 74 SO, 2.92 ERA) and Julio Teheran (4-4, 71 IP, 34 R, 57 H, 14 HR, 33 BB, 56 SO, 4.31 ERA have also been solid for Atlanta in 2018.

How San Diego Padres & Atlanta Braves Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Braves are 36-30 ATS while the O/U is 32-31-3.  On the other hand, the Padres are 35-34 ATS while the O/U is 33-34-2.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Left-hander Clayton Richard (5-6) will get to continue his solid streak of pitching as he will take the hill for the Padres in game 2.  He will also look to build off his last outing to where he pitched 7 innings while allowing 1 run on 2 hits in a 3-1 road win versus the Miami Marlins on 6-10-2018.  Richard has only been credited with an average of 2 earned runs per game in his last 3 starts while the under has been the play in 4 of Richard’s last 6 starts.  Freddie Freeman and Dansby Swanson are both 1-3 against Richard in the past, however, Ender Inciarte is 2-4 while Nick Markakis is 1-5 against the lefty in their careers.  Kurt Suzuki is 0-3 against Richard in the past.  It will be interesting to see if/how Richard can somehow continue his streak against a squad that is currently averaging 5 runs per game in their last 5 outings.

Against The Spread Selection: Atlanta Braves

My reason for the pick :

While the Braves have lost some games lately, I will give them the edge in this matchup simply due to the way in which they have played at SunTrust Park this year (16-12).  The Padres, on the other hand, are only 13-16 away from PetCo Park this year, yet, will certainly be competitive in game 2 as they were their last time out against Atlanta.  In all, I see the Braves winning a close matchup on Friday as the Braves’ ability to obtain timely hits will be the difference in them picking up the game 2 victory.
