Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
San Francisco Giants vs Los Angeles Dodgers
Game 1 of a 3-game NL West set between the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers will take place at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, on Friday night at 10:10 pm EST. The Giants occupy the 3rd spot within the NL West division while the Dodgers, who have also played well recently, are in 2nd place within the division. This will be the 4th meeting of the year amongst these two teams with the Giants winning 6 of the last 10 outings while splitting the last series at Dodger Park on 4-1-2018.
San Francisco Giants's Latest Performance :
The San Francisco Giants come into this matchup winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2. Recently, the Giants would pick up yet another series win against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 5-4 win in game 3 on 6-6-2018. After winning a 3-game road set versus the surging Washington Nationals on 6-10-2018, the Giants would go on to lose the first 2 games of a 3-game road set versus the Marlins with game 2 being a 3-1 victory for the Marlins.
For the season, the Giants are averaging 4.19 runs per game (22nd) with a team batting average of .262 (2nd), 69 homers (19th) along with 26 stolen bases (22nd). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.35 (22nd) with 505 strikeouts (26th) along with 23 quality starts (24th).
Brandon Belt (.307 BA on 192 AB) and Buster Posey (.293 BA on 205 AB) have been the most consistent hitters for the Giants this year. Evan Longoria (.248 BA on 250 AB) has also been solid at the plate for San Francisco.
Chris Stratton (7-4, 75 IP, 40 R, 72 H, 8 HR, 33 BB, 61 SO, 4.56 ERA) has been consistent on the mound for the Giants this season. On the other hand, Ty Blach (3-5, 68 IP, 39 R, 80 H, 5 HR, 25 BB, 35 SO, 4.63 ERA) has also been solid for the Giants in 2018.
Los Angeles Dodgers's Latest Performance :
The Dodgers come into this matchup winners of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 5-0. Recently, the Dodgers would go on to sweep a 3-game road set against the Colorado Rockies on 6-3-2018. They would most certainly carry this momentum into a 3-game road set versus the Pittsburgh Pirates as they would get the series win on 6-7-2018 with an 8-7 victory in the finale. The Dodgers would not only go on to win a 3-game home set versus the Atlanta Braves on 6-10-2018, they also won game 1 of a 2-game home set versus the Texas Rangers on 6-12-2018 by a 12-5 score.
The Dodgers average 4.91 runs per game (6th) with a team batting average of .246 (17th), 85 homers (5th), along with 22 stolen bases (27th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.72 (11th) with 630 strikeouts (4th) along with 25 quality starts (22nd).
Yasmani Grandal (.247 BA on 194 AB), Cody Bellinger (.241 BA on 237 AB), and Corey Seager (.267 BA on 101 AB) have been the leaders offensively for the Dodgers this season. Chris Taylor (.253 BA on 253 AB) has also been pivotal to the Dodger’s offensive attack.
Clayton Kershaw (1-4) has pitched 49 innings while allowing 15 runs on 44 hits, 7 homers, 11 walks, and 53 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.76. Alex Wood (1-5) has pitched 69 innings while allowing 39 runs on 69 hits, 8 homers, 13 walks, and 66 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.43.
How San Francisco Giants & Los Angeles Dodgers Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Giants are 37-30 ATS while the O/U is 34-30-3. On the other hand, the Dodgers are 30-36 ATS while the O/U is 35-28-3.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
Both these teams come into this matchup with tons of momentum as the Dodgers have won 7 of 9 while the Giants are winners of 8 of their last 11 games. What is interesting is the way in which these teams have been able to win games via ‘grind-out’ fashion by utilizing solid pitching and timely hitting in which to take advantage of opportunities in which to score runs. This formula, as stated, has not worked as well recently in that both teams are surrendering well over 4 runs per game in their last 5, however, how/if each team will benefit from their recent momentum in the future will be witnessed in this series. Again, this game has huge implications as it relates to standings within the NL West and I fully expect the focus to be there for both the Giants and Dodgers on Friday.
Totals Selection: Over
My reason for the prediction :
I will go with the trends and back the over in this contest primarily due to the fact that the over has been the result in 5 of the Giants last 7 outings while being the play in 8 of the last 9 for the Dodgers. In all, both teams have scored some runs recently, but, it is clear that their pitching has taken a small step back from how they have been known to perform. Nonetheless, I see this shaky play at the mound to continue against two hot teams looking to better position themselves to take over the top spot in the division. It is for this reason that I see this as being a back and forth game where runs will certainly be plentiful.
