Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Boston Red Sox vs Seattle Mariners
Game 3 of a 4-game set between the visiting Boston Red Sox and the Seattle Mariners will take place at SafeCo Field in Seattle, Washington, on Saturday night at 8:15 pm EST. The Red Sox were demoted to the number 2 spot within their respective division by the Yankees, recently, while the Mariners continue to occupy the top spot within the competitive AL West division. This will be the first meeting of the year amongst these two surging teams, however, both teams have split the last 6 games with the Mariners taking the last 3-game set at SafeCo Field on 7-24-2017.
Boston Red Sox's Latest Performance :
The Boston Red Sox come into this game winners of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4. Recently, the Red Sox would pick up a 3-game road series win versus the Detroit Tigers on 6-7-2018, yet, would lose their next series at home versus the Chicago White Sox on 6-10-2018. They would, however, come out strong in their next series against the Baltimore Orioles to get the 3-game sweep on 6-13-2018.
For the season, the Red Sox are averaging 5.13 runs per game (2nd) with a team batting average of .262 (1st), 99 homers (2nd), along with 50 stolen bases (3rd). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.42 (5th) with 677 strikeouts (2nd) along with 35 quality starts on the year (4th).
Mookie Betts (.352 BA on 193 AB), J.D. Martinez (.313 BA on 246 AB), Hanley Ramirez (.254 BA on 177 AB), Rafael Devers (.231 BA on 251 AB) and Andrew Benintendi (.302 BA on 252 AB) have all been consistent at the plate this year for the Red Sox and are their primary offensive leaders. Eduardo Nunez (.253 BA on 233 AB) is also a key offensive component for Boston.
Chris Sale (6-4, 95 IP, 31 R, 66 H, 10 HR, 26 BB, 129 SO, 2.75 ERA), Rick Porcello (8-3, 86.1 IP, 39 R, 79 H, 7 HR, 20 BB, 80 SO, 3.54 ERA) and David Price (7-4, 74.1 IP, 36 R, 63 H, 7 HR, 30 BB, 72 SO, 4.00) have held it down for the Red Sox pitching staff all season.
Seattle Mariners's Latest Performance :
The Mariners have won 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 4-0-1. Recently, the Mariners would tie a short, 2-game road set against division foe Houston Astros on 6-6-2018. In yet another series with the Rays, this time a 4-game road set, the Mariners came out in dominant fashion winning the series on 6-10-2018. The Mariners would also go on to sweep a 3-game home set versus the Los Angeles Angels on 6-13-2018.
For the season, the Mariners are averaging 4.46 runs per game (12th) with a team batting average of .261 (5th), 85 homers (8th) along with 44 stolen bases (5th). Their pitching staff has certainly been inconsistent on the year with an ERA of 3.86 (13th) with 596 strikeouts (11th) along with 33 quality starts (6th).
Dee Gordon (.282 BA on 238 AB), Jean Segura (.347 BA on 274 AB), and Mitch Haniger (.270 BA on 248 AB) have been solid at the plate for the Mariners thus far. Kyle Seager (.226 BA on 266 AB) has also been pivotal to Seattle’s success this season.
Mike Leake (7-3) has pitched 86.2 innings while allowing 43 runs on 90 hits, 12 homers, 20 walks, and 54 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.26 while James Paxton (6-1) has pitched 89.1 innings while allowing 30 runs on 65 hits, 9 homers, 25 walks, and 111 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.02 for the season. Finally, Felix Hernandez (6-5) has pitched 77.1 innings this year while allowing 51 runs on 77 hits, 11 homers, 30 walks, and 64 strikeouts with an ERA of 5.70.
How Boston Red Sox & Seattle Mariners Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
For the season, the Red Sox are 37-31 ATS while the O/U is 32-34-2. On the other hand, the Mariners are 35-32 ATS while the O/U is 35-31-1.
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
Wade LeBlanc (2-0) will get the start for the Mariners looking to continue his streak of efficient pitching. In his last outing, he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in a 5-3 home win versus the Los Angeles Angels on 6-11-2018. LeBlanc has only been credited with allowing 10 earned runs in his last 6 starts while the under is 5-1-1 in his last 7 overall. The only 2 hitters within this potent Red Sox squad that has had experience and success against LeBlanc in the past is Jackie Bradley Jr. (1-3) and J.D. Martinez (2-3). Mookie Betts (0-3), Xander Bogaerts (0-3), Sandy Leon (0-2), and Mitch Moreland (0-2) have not had any success at all facing the left-hander in the past.
Totals Selection: Under
My reason for the prediction :
With the momentum that the Mainers have carried for the past few weeks along with the momentum LeBlanc has garnered from his past outings, I will not go so far as to say they will dominate the Red Sox in this matchup. I will say, however, that I see the under being the play in this matchup due to the fact that LeBlanc has only allowed more than 3 runs once in his last 10 starts. Combine this with the fact that the under has been the play in 7 of the last 8 for the Sox along with being the case in 6 of the last 8 of LeBlanc’s last 8 starts, I will back the under as I expect him to continue to pitch well against a quality, all-around team in the Red Sox in game 3.
