Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Cincinnati Reds vs Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates will welcome back the Reds to PNC Park for game number 2 of the 3 game series. The Pirates are 4th in the NL Central division while the Reds are in the last place. This will be their 3rd meeting of the season. The season series is currently tied at 1-1.
Cincinnati Reds's Latest Performance :
The Reds are coming off a dominant 2 game sweep over the Royals as they were able to put up 12 runs in two games and allowing only a single run. Tyler Mahle came through for the Reds as he provided 6 1/3 scoreless innings in a shoutout victory. It was their second shutout of the season. The Reds will cap off their 6 game road trip against their rivals Pirates. The Reds are 14-20 on the road this season. They are hoping that they will be able to carry over the momentum from the Royals series into the series with Pirates.
Adam Duvall struck a grand slam in his last performance clinching with the win for the Reds. He unloaded on a Jason Adam pitch in the ninth inning to turn a close game into a rout. The homer was his 11th of the season and gave him 38 RBI as well. Although his batting average isn’t where he would like it to be at .188. He is hoping that he can end the road trip on a good note.
Pitching for the Reds will be Luis Castillo. He allowed four hits, but three were for extra bases, including Yadier Molina’s three-run double. He found a groove and struck out 10 over his six innings and retired 10 of his last 11. He has the talent to be great but the only thing he is lacking is consistency. He owns a 5.79 ERA and 1.42 WHIP on the season.
Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :
The Pirates were able to avoid the series sweep against the D-Backs. The Pirates will be back at PNC Park for a 10 game homestand beginning Friday. The homestand opens with a three-game series against the Reds. The Pirates are a much better team at home they are 18-15. The Pirates will be able to close the gap in the division playing against the Reds at home. Coming into this series the Pirates are ranked 8th in batting with 315 runs this season, the Pirates will have to improve their pitching if they want to make a run into the postseason as they are ranked 21st with a 4.33 ERA.
Jordy Mercer drove in three of Pittsburgh’s five runs in his last performance. He accounted for two of the Pirates’ six hits including a two-run double in the second inning. Mercer added to his great batting in the fourth, hitting a solo homer off Zack Greinke to put the Pirates ahead 5-2. has gone 6-for-12 with a home run, three doubles and five RBI over his four-game hitting streak. He’s lifted his season average from .250 to .264 during that span. He will be a huge factor when the Pirates plays the Reds at home.
Pitching for the Pirates will be Ivan Nova. He came off the DL on Sunday in fine form, holding the Cubs to one run on four hits while striking out eight and recording eight outs on the ground over 5 2/3 innings. He is 3-5 with a 4.68 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 55/12 K/BB ratio in 67 1/3 innings (12 starts) this season.

Pirates are 3-8 in their last 11 overall.
Reds are 8-3 in their last 11 road games vs. a team with a losing record.
Against The Spread Selection: Pittsburgh Pirates
My reason for the pick :
The Pirates should be able to handle the Reds at home, despite the Reds are coming off a shutout victory bear in mind they were playing against a struggling Royals team as for the Pirates they will be able to carry over their rubber game win over a very strong opponent the D-Backs. This will be the chance for the Pirates to climb up the standings as for the Reds it seems like it is going to be another lost season in the books.
