Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

San Diego Padres vs Atlanta Braves

Game 3 of a 4-game set versus the visiting San Diego Padres and the Atlanta Braves will resume on Saturday afternoon at 5:10 pm EST at SunTrust Park in Atlanta, Georgia.  The Padres are in 5th place within the NL West division while the Atlanta Braves now occupy 1st place in the NL East division.  This will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two teams as the Padres won a 4-game set at PetCo Park earlier in the year.

San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :

The Padres come into this matchup winners of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U has been 1-4.  Recently, the Padres would win a 3-game home set versus the Atlanta Braves to which they would win the finale on 6-6-2018 by a score of 3-1.  This momentum would translate into their next series as they would pick up the 3-1 road win in the finale against the Miami Marlins on 6-10-2018.  They also picked up a 4-2 win on the road in game 2 of a 3-game road set versus the St. Louis Cardinals on 6-12-2018 to tie the series at 1 apiece.  The Padres would go on to win the finale by a score of 4-2 to win yet another series.

For the season, San Diego averages 3.87 runs per game (25th) with a team batting average of .233 (24th), 62 homers (27th) and 41 stolen bases on the year (8th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.16 (18th) with 596 strikeouts (10th) and 22 quality starts thus far (26th).

Jose Pirela (.274 BA on 263 AB), Eric Hosmer (.290 BA on 254 AB), and Freddy Galvis (.231 BA on 247 AB) have been the few bright spots for this San Diego squad.

Tyson Ross (5-3) has pitched 76 innings while allowing 32 runs on 66 hits, 7 homers, 28 walks, and 78 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.43 has also been solid at the mound.  Clayton Richard (5-6) has been improving for the Padres this season and has pitched 88 innings while allowing 44 runs on 80 hits, 9 homers, 30 walks, and 71 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.40.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

The Braves come into this game winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U is 4-1.   Recently, the Braves would be bought back to earth by the Padres after a set of huge victories as they would fall in defeat in a 3-game road set at PetCo Park on 6-6-2018.  They were never able to regain their footing and would lose yet another 3-game road set to the Dodgers on 6-10-2018.  Nonetheless, they came out strong in a 2-game home set versus the struggling Mets to pick up the 2-0 victory in game 2 to get the sweep on 6-12-2018.

For the season, the Braves are averaging 5.96 runs per game (4th) with a team batting average of .261 (4th), 79 homers (13th) along with 42 stolen bases (6th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.58 (8th) with 596 strikeouts (9th) along with 28 quality starts on the season (15th).

Freddie Freeman (.344 BA on 256 AB), Nick Markakis (.338 BA on 268 AB), Ryan Flaherty (.264 BA on 121 AB), and Ozzie Albies (.255 BA on 290 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Braves all season.  Dansby Swanson (.265 BA on 200 AB) and Ender Incarte (.245 BA on 265 AB) have also been consistent at the plate for the Braves.

Mike Foltynewicz (5-4, 79 IP, 23 R, 57 H, 5 HR, 33 BB, 93 SO, 2.16 ERA) and Brandon McCarthy (5-3, 68 IP, 40 R, 81 H, 12 HR, 20 BB, 56 SO, 5.03 ERA) have been bright spots on the mound for the Braves this year.  Sean Newcomb (7-2, 74 IP, 27 R, 56 H, 5 HR, 35 BB, 74 SO, 2.92 ERA) and Julio Teheran (4-4, 71 IP, 34 R, 57 H, 14 HR, 33 BB, 56 SO, 4.31 ERA have also been solid for Atlanta in 2018.

How San Diego Padres & Atlanta Braves Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Braves are 36-30 ATS while the O/U is 32-31-3.  On the other hand, the Padres are 35-34 ATS while the O/U is 33-34-2.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The pitcher for the Braves have not been named, however, Jordan Lyles (2-3) will come to the hill for the Padres in order to extend San Diego’s currently winning streak.  After an 8-3 home win against the Miami Marlins on 5-31-2018 where Lyles pitched 7 innings while allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, 1 walk and 7 strikeouts, he regressed in his next 2 outings surrendering 12 earned runs in his last 2 starts.  He will certainly be looking to sharpen his delivery against this Braves squad, yet, it will not be easy considering the hitters in which Atlanta possesses.  Peter Boujos (.250 BA on 4 AB), Freddie freeman (1-3), and Ender Inciarte (.273 BA on 11 AB) have the most success and history versus Lyles.  Tyler Flowers and Nick Markakis are a combined (0-3) against the right-hander in the past.

Totals Selection: Over

My reason for the prediction :

Considering that Lyles has been shaky in his last couple starts combined with the fact that the over has been prevalent in the Braves’ their last few games (6 of 7), I would expect both teams to score some runs on Saturday afternoon in game 3.  Of course, this will certainly be a very competitive game between two solid teams, however, I believe that the trends will hold true that this game will go over its set total.
