Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Baltimore Orioles vs Washington Nationals

Game 1 of a 3-game set versus the visiting Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals will take place at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday night at 7:05 pm EST.  the Orioles continue to play miserably and are in last place within the AL East division while the Nationals have slipped a bit lately, yet, continue to occupy the 2nd place slot within the NL East division.  In their last outing, Washington Nationals suffered a 2-0 game 2 loss due to a strong performance on the mound by Marco Estrada (3-7), who would pitch 6.2 innings while allowing 0 runs on 3 hits with an ERA of 4.66 while Max Scherzer (10-3) would suffer the loss for the Nats as he pitched 6 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits with a homer and 10 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.06.  The Blue Jays cashed in on the money line as huge underdogs (+200) while the under was the play in that the total was set at 7.5 runs for the game.  The O’s, on the other hand, became a victim of a Marlins rally and would ultimately lose game 2 of a 3-game home set versus the Marlins by a score of 5-4 on 6-16-2018.  Wei-Yin Chen (2-3) would pick up the win in pitching 6 innings while allowing 3 runs on 8 hits in the victory while J.T. Realmuto went 3-4 for the night with 4 RBI’s.  Alex Cobb (3-7) suffered the loss for the Orioles while Manny Machado was the lone bright spot for Baltimore in going 2-5 with 2 RBI’s.  The Marlins cashed in on the money line as underdogs (+150) while the under was barely the play in that the total was set at 9.5 runs for the game.  This will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two teams with the Nationals sweeping a 3-game road set on 5-20-2018.

Baltimore Orioles's Latest Performance :

The Baltimore Orioles come into this matchup having lost their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4. Recently, Baltimore would win a short, 2-game road set versus the Mets on 6-6-2018 while following up this series with a 4-game road sweep at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays on 6-10-2018.  The O’s would fall once again in their next series against the red-hot Boston Red Sox by getting swept once again while also performing terribly in the first 2 of a 3-game home set versus the Miami Marlins with game 2 being a slim 5-4 win for Miami.

For the season, the Orioles average only 3.45 runs per game (30th) with a team batting average of .225 (30th), 75 homers (17th) along with 25 stolen bases on the year (24th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.88 (28th) with 546 strikeouts (23rd) along with 32 quality starts (8th).

Manny Machado (.308 BA, 263 AB) has been the most effective offensive option for the Orioles this year.  Meanwhile, Trey Mancini (.223 BA, 256 AB) and Adam Jones (.291 BA, 275 AB) have also been effective for the offensive attack.

Dylan Bundy (4-7, 83.2 IP, 75 H, 40 R, 16 HR, 25 BB, 95 SO, 3.66 ERA) and Kevin Gauseman (3-6, 82.1 IP, 95 H, 48 R, 14 HR, 20 BB, 81 SO, 4.48 ERA) have pitched the most innings for the Orioles this season.

Washington Nationals 's Latest Performance :

The Washington Nationals have lost 4 of their last 5 contests to where the O/U has been 1-4.  Recently, Washington would win a 2-game home set versus the Tampa Bay Rays on 6-6-2018, however, they would go on to lose a 3-game home set to the Giants on 6-10-2018 while splitting a 2-game road set against the NY Yankees by winning game 2 by a 5-4 score.  The Nationals took a severe step back by losing the first 2 of a 3-game road set versus the Toronto Blue Jays in their current series, with game 2 being a 2-0 slim victory for the Jays.

For the season, the Nationals are averaging 4.22 runs per game (18th) with a team batting average of .235 (22nd), 80 homers, (16th) along with 54 stolen bases (2nd).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.31 (3rd) with 655 strikeouts (4th) along with 38 quality starts on the year (3rd).

Trea Truner (.257 BA on 272 AB), Bryce Harper (.221 BA on 235 AB), and Michael A. Taylor (.226 BA on 221 AB) have been the offensive leaders for this Washington Nationals squad thus far.

Max Scherzer (10-3, 100.2 IP, 26 R, 62 H, 8 HR, 23 BB, 152 SO, 2.06 ERA) and Gio Gonzales (6-3, 80.2 IP, 29 R, 75 H, 7 HR, 34 BB, 78 SO, 3.01 ERA) have been the most consistent on the pitching staff while Stephen Strasburg (6-6, 80.2 IP, 35 R, 69 H, 12 HR, 19 BB, 95 SO, 3.46 ERA) and Tanner Roark (3-7, 84.1 IP, 35 R, 67 H, 11 HR, 27 BB, 70 SO, 3.63 ERA) have also been solid on the mound for the Nationals this year.

How Baltimore Orioles & Washington Nationals Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Orioles are 24-45 ATS while the O/U is 28-40-1.  On the other hand, the Nationals are 34-33 ATS while the O/U is 26-39-2.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The starters for neither team for either game within this 3-game set has been posted, but, it would be fair to say that for the talent that the Nationals possess within their lineup, their offense has struggled in the past few outings averaging only 2 runs per game (with 3 of those games being shutouts).  The Orioles, as we know, have struggled all year long and are now on a current 9-game skid to where their offense has averaged 2.1 runs per game.  On the other hand, the pitching staff for the O’s have surrendered an average of 5.2 runs during their present losing streak.

Totals Selection: Under

My reason for the prediction :

In their prior 3-game matchup, the under was 3-0 as the Nationals swept the series earlier in the year, and I expect this entire series to trend towards the under once again.  You have two struggling offenses that are playing miserably lately where the under has been the result in a combined 8 of their last 10 games.  In all, take the under in this each of these matchup as it will certainly be an offensive sleeper in that the Nationals pitching staff, in particular, is certainly due for yet another dominating performance very soon.
