Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Detroit Tigers vs Toronto Blue Jays

Game 1 of a 4-game set between the Detroit Tigers and the Toronto Blue Jays will take place at Rodgers Centre beginning at 7:07 pm EST on Friday night in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  The Tigers currently occupy the 3rd spot within the AL Central division while the Toronto Blue Jays have fallen to the 4th place slot within the AL East division ahead of only the lowly Baltimore Orioles.  In their last outing, the Tigers were 9-7 losers to the Oakland Athletics on 6-26-2018.  The A’s cashed in on the money line as slight favorites (-120) while the over was the play in that the total was set at 9 runs for the game.  In this game, Jed Lowrie went 4-4 from the plate with 2 RBI’s while Chad Pinder (1-3) had 2 RBI’s along with Jonathon Lucroy (1-5) also having 2 RBIS’s in the win.  Frankie Montas did not factor into the decision as he went only 3 innings while allowing 6 runs on 8 hits, 3 walks, and 1 strikeout with an ERA of 3.68 while the other pitcher, Blaine Hardy, was not much better as he pitched 4 innings while surrendering 6 runs on 6 hits, 2 homers, and 4 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.59.

On the other hand, the Blue Jays were 7-0 road losers to the Houston Astros.  In this game, the Astros cashed in on the spread as huge favorites (-240) while the under was the play in that the total was set at 8 runs for the game.  Toronto could only manage 5 hits for the game as Yangervis Solarte (1-3), Kevin Pillar (1-4), and Russell Martin (1-3) each had a hit apiece.  Ryan Boruki (0-1) took the loss for the Blue Jays as he pitched 6 innings while allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, 4 walks, and 3 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.00 while the opposing pitcher, Charlie Morton (10-1) became a double-digit winner for the season in going 7 innings giving up no runs on 4 hits, 2 walks, and 13 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.54.  this will be the 2nd meeting of the year amongst these two teams as the Tigers took a 3-game home set on 6-3-2018.

Detroit Tigers's Latest Performance :

The Detroit Tigers have lost their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2.  The Tigers would not only get swept in a 2-game road set versus the surging Cincinnati reds on 6-20-2018, they would also go on to get swept in a 3-game road set versus the Cleveland Indians on 6-24-2018.  They would also follow this up by losing their first 2 of a 4-game road set versus the Oakland A’s, with game 2 being a 9-7 defeat.

Currently, the Tigers are averaging 4.09 runs per game (23rd) with a team batting average of .250 (12th), 63 homers (29th), along with 42 stolen bases (12th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.47 (22nd) with 600 strikeouts (25th), along with 27 quality starts on the year (26th).

Miguel Cabrera (.299 BA on 134 AB), Nicholas Castellanos (.308 BA on 312 AB), and Leonys Martin (.261 BA on 261 AB) spearhead the Tiger offensive attack.  Jeimer Candelario (.243 BA on 251 AB) along with Victor Martinez (.243 BA on 247 AB) have also been solid as well this season.

Matthew Boyd (4-6) has pitched 82.1 innings this year while allowing 38 runs on 68 hits, 8 homers, 33 walks, and 69 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.15 while Michael Fulmer (3-6) has pitched 86.1 innings while allowing 43 runs on 79 hits, 11 homers, 30 walks, and 75 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.17.

Toronto Blue Jays's Latest Performance :

The Blue Jays are winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-3.  On 6-3-2018, the Jays would tie a 2-game series against the Atlanta Braves on 6-20-2018 while following this up with a 4-game road series tie against the Los Angeles Dodgers on 6-24-2018.  The would go on to tie a 3-game road set to the Houston Astros by suffering a 7-0 loss in game 2 after a 6-3 win in game 1.

For the season, the Toronto Blue Jays are averaging 4.46 runs per game (12th) with a team batting average of .236 (24th), 106 homers (6th) along with 25 stolen bases (28th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.56 (23rd) with 661 strikeouts (19th) along with 30 quality starts on the season (24th).

Kevin Pillar (.242 BA on 297 AB), Justin Smoak (.233 BA on 253 AB), and Yangervis Solarte (.252 BA on 301 AB) have been the offensive spearheads for the Toronto Blue Jays this season.

Pitcher JA Happ (10-3, 97 IP, 42 R, 76 H, 13 HR, 27 BB, 94 SO with an ERA of 2.62) has been the most consistent pitcher for the Blue Jay’s bullpen this year.  Aaron Sanchez (3-5, 79.2 IP, 43 R, 75 H, 8 HR, 45 BB, 67 SO with an ERA of 4.52) has also been a pivotal piece to the rotation, despite his lackluster performances this season.

How Detroit Tigers & Toronto Blue Jays Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Blue Jays are 39-40 ATS while the O/U is 38-35-6.  On the other hand, the Tigers are 41-39 ATS while the O/U is 34-44-2.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Neither pitcher has been named for any matchup within this series as of yet, however, it would be fair to say that after a pretty solid season, the Tigers are reeling at this point in the season.  Combine this with the fact that they are only 5-12 on the road in their last 17 road games, I can certainly see some problems for Detroit as they go into Rodgers Centre to face a Jays team that have won 3 of their last 4 outings.  This will be an interesting matchup this weekend in that the Tigers certainly need some wins in which to prevent dropping in the AL Central while the Tigers will need some wins to stay competitive within the division, altogether.

Totals Selection: Picks: Game 1, 2, 3, 4: Over

My reason for the prediction :

Expect the over to be the mantra in this series.  The fact is that the Blue Jays, in their last 3 home games, have given up an average of 7 runs per game while the Tigers, in their last 5 games, have given up a whopping 8 runs per game.  Altogether, during their current 7-game skid, the Tigers are allowing a tad under 8 runs per game while the Blue Jays, despite their recent success, continues to give up close to 5 runs per game.  In all, for the entirety of this series, expect the over to be the play in that both offenses may be heating up, however, their pitching is atrocious at this point in the season, and this will show in each matchup within this interesting weekend series.
