Pittsburgh Pirates vs San Diego Padres

The Padres will welcome the Pirates to Petco Park as the two teams will go head to head in a 3 game series starting Friday. The Padres are in the last place of the NL West while the Pirates are in 4th place in the NL Central division. This will be their second meeting of the season, in the first meeting the Padres won on the road.

Game 1&2: 10:10 PM ET

Game 3: 4:10 PM ET

Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :

The Pirates have lost 5 of their last 6 games, the Pirates are currently on a 9 game road trip, they are not doing too well on the road this season they are 16-21 when playing away from home. The Pirates have dropped to 4th place in the NL Central division they are now 9 1/2 games back for the top spot in the division. Coming into this series the Pirates are 20th in pitching with a 4.22 ERA and 16th in batting with 345 runs scored this season. The Pirates are coming off a tough walk-off loss in the 10th inning against the Mets.

Player to watch in this series: Gregory Polanco, he homered and singled in a run, he has been the Pirates’ best outfielder this month, though that didn’t stop Clint Hurdle for sitting him three straight games over the weekend. He’s a better bet than Austin Meadows or Corey Dickerson going forward, and he should be starting against every righty at least. He is slashing .220/.329/.445 with 37 RBIs and leads the team in homers with 11.

Team leaders:

  • RBIs: Josh Bell (39)
  • Homers: Gregory Polanco (11)
  • Batting Average: Corey Dickerson (.299)

Probable Pitchers for this series:

Game 1: Joe Musgrove, he will start for the Pirates in the series opener, in his last start he let in five runs in four innings and was charged with a loss to the Diamondbacks. He is now 2-3 with a 4.59 ERA after six starts. He has 31 strikeouts and nine walks in 33 1/3 innings total.

Game 2: Trevor Williams, he allowed three runs over six innings while striking out six. He owns a 4.03 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 87 innings with the Pirates. He’ll attempt to lower both on Saturday against the Padres.

Game 3: Jameson Taillon, he surrendered two runs over six-plus innings Monday in a win over the Mets. He will close things out for the Pirates in the rubber game. He’s allowed more than three runs just once in his last 11 outings, and he’s 5-6 with a 3.96 ERA overall.

San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :

The Padres will return home as they will play the Pirates in a 3 game set, they are not a very good home team this season they are 18-23 when playing at home this season. The Padres are currently in the last place of the NL West and it is starting to look like another lost season for the Padres even though they are making a late push but I don’t really see it happening. Coming into this series the Padres are 25th in scoring with 304 runs scored this season and 18th in pitching they are 18th in the Majors with a 4.13 ERA. The Padres bullpen continues to be a strength they have a 3.53 ERA which ranked 4th best in the National Leauge and 7th best in the Majors.

Player to watch in this series: Hunter Renfroe, He has picked up the pace over the past few games, going 6-for-12 (.500) with a double, a solo home run and just one strikeout to raise his average 26 points just since June 22. He has struggled to adjust to major league pitching and should be a problem for the Pirates when they the Padres at home. He is slashing .256/.336/.457 with 20 RBIs and 4 homers. I expect his numbers to keep going up as the season progresses he will do all he can to lead the way offensively for the Padres.

Team leaders:

  • RBIs: Christian Villanueva (38)
  • Homers: Christian Villanueva (16)
  • Batting Average: Eric Hosmer (.271)

Probable Pitchers for this series:

Game 1: Matt Strahm, he will get another start after a good performance against the Giants allowing one run in 3 1/3 innings. 1-2 with a 2.28 ERA in 23 2/3 innings spread over five starts.

Game 2: Eric Lauer, he allowed one earned run, five hits and one walk with four strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision.He has allowed just four home runs across his past eight starts. He is  2-1 with a 2.28 ERA across five June outings over 27 2/3 innings.

Game 3: Joey Lucchesi, he allowed just one hit and two walks over four scoreless innings with four strikeouts. The rookie will close things out for the Padres on Sunday against Jameson Taillon.

How Pittsburgh Pirates & San Diego Padres Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Padres are 5-2 in their last 7 after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game.

Pirates are 1-5 in their last 6 overall.

Against The Spread Selection: San Diego Padres

My reason for the pick :

Both teams trying to end their skids it is tough to choose who will come up on top, the Padres aren’t a good home team while the Pirates aren’t a good road team. I predict a 2-1 series win for the Padres at home over the Pirates, the Padres bullpen will come through for the Padres in this series as they will look to score early and let their bullpen close out the game, it is hard for both teams to really make an impact late into the season and with the trade deadline looming the Padres players will be on their A-game because they might get traded to a winning team in the near future.

Betting trends for Pittsburgh Pirates:

  • Pirates are 2-9 in their last 11 games following a win.

Betting trends for San Diego Padres:

  • Padres are 1-8 in their last 9 overall.
