Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

NY Mets vs Toronto Blue Jays

Game 1 of a 2-game set between the visiting NY Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays will take place at Rodgers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on Tuesday night at 7:07 pm EST.  The Mets, due to losing 10 of their last 11 games, find themselves in the cellar of the NL East division while the Blue Jays are in 4th place within the AL East.  In their last outing, the Mets were 5-2 losers versus the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park on 6-30-2018 to go down 2-0 for the series, altogether.  The Marlins actually cashed in on the money line as huge underdogs in this matchup (+150) while the over was the play in that the total was set at 7 runs for the game.  Jacob DeGrom (5-4) took the loss for the Mets as he went 6 innings while allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, 1 homer, and 8 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.84 for the game while Pablo Lopez (1-0) picked up his first win of the season in pitching 6 innings while allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, 2 homers, and 5 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.00.  The Mets only had 6 hits for the game with Todd Frazier and Jose Bautista each going 1-4 with an RBI.  The loss was the 3rd straight for the Mets.

The Blue Jays would get the slim 4-3 home win versus a struggling Detroit Tiger team on 6-30-2018.  They would cash in on the money line as favorites (-163) while the under was the play in that the total was set at 9 runs for the game.  Sam Gaviglio did not factor into the decision; However, he did pitch 7 innings while giving up 3 runs on 4 hits, 2 homers, and 5 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.97.  Justin Smoak and Treon Davis each had a hit with an RBI in the victory while Randal Grichuk was 1-4 with 2 RBI’s for the Jays.  Matthew Boyd also did not factor into the decision for the Tigers as they would lose their 11th game in a row.

NY Mets's Latest Performance :

The New York Mets have lost 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-1-2.  Recently, the Mets would lose a 3-game road set versus the Pittsburgh Pirates by dropping the finale by a score of 5-3 on 6-27-2018.  The Mets would also go on the lose the first 2 games of the following series against the Miami Marlins to where they were outscored 13-4 in those 2 games.

For the season, the Mets are averaging 3.92 (24th) with a team batting average of .231 (28th), 84 homers (23rd), along with 32 stolen bases (22nd).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.34 (20th) with 728 strikeouts (9th) along with 35 quality starts on the season (14th).

Asdrubal Cabrera (.279 BA on 308 AB), and Amed Rosario (.246 BA on 248 AB) has also been a critical component to the Mets’ scoring attack in 2018.

Jacob deGrom (5-4, 107.1 IP, 25 R, 81 H, 6 HR, 28 BB, 134 SO, 1.84 ERA) and Noah Syndergaard (4-1, 64.2 IP, 25 R, 63 H, 5 HR, 13 BB, 76 SO, 3.06 ERA) are the bright spots for their talented pitching staff.  Zack Wheeler (2-6, 88.2 IP, 46 R, 86 H, 9 H, 32 BB, 86 SO, 4.47 ERA) have also been serviceable for the Mets this year.

Toronto Blue Jays's Latest Performance :

The Blue Jays are winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-3.  On 6-3-2018, the Jays would lose a 3-game road set against the Houston Astros by losing 7-6 in the finale on 6-27-2018.  The would recover in their next series, however, and win the first 2 games of a 3-game set versus the Detroit Tigers with each victory being by only 1 run.

For the season, the Toronto Blue Jays are averaging 4.46 runs per game (12th) with a team batting average of .236 (24th), 109 homers (7th) along with 25 stolen bases (28th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.52 (23rd) with 683 strikeouts (19th) along with 32 quality starts on the season (24th).

Kevin Pillar (.251 BA on 307 AB), Justin Smoak (.235 BA on 260 AB), and Yangervis Solarte (.256 BA on 313 AB) have been the offensive spearheads for the Toronto Blue Jays this season.

Pitcher JA Happ (10-3, 97 IP, 42 R, 76 H, 13 HR, 27 BB, 94 SO with an ERA of 2.62) has been the most consistent pitcher for the Blue Jay’s bullpen this year.

How NY Mets & Toronto Blue Jays Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Mets are 33-47 ATS while the O/U is 36-41-3.  On the other hand, the Toronto Blue Jays are 40-42 ATS while the O/U is 39-37-2.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

While the starter for the Blue Jays have not been named, Zack Wheeler (2-6) will come to the mound for the Mets in game 1 of this set looking to get over some tough luck in his last outing to where he pitched 7 innings while allowing no runs on 5 hits and 7 strikeouts in a 5-3 home loss to the Pirates to where he received the no decision.  In his last outing versus the Blue Jays, he was awful in pitching 4 innings while allowing 6 runs on 7 hits, 2 homers, 3 walks, and 7 strikeouts in a 12-1 home loss on 5-16-2018.  Wheeler has only been credited with 12 earned runs in his last 5 starts while the team is 2-5 in his last 7 starts.  The under has been the result in 3 of this last 5 starts.  Wheeler has not won a game since a 4-29-2018 game against the Padres at PetCo Park to where he pitched 5 innings while allowing 2 runs on 6 hits in a 14-2 win.  Wheeler does not have much experience against this Jays lineup at all, however, he has faced Randal Grichuk (0-3) and Yangervis Solarte (1-1) in his career with mixed results.  Neither pitchers for game 2 have been named.

Against The Spread Selection: Game 1: Toronto Blue Jays

My reason for the pick :

With Wheeler coming to the mound, one never quite knows what he/she will get, however, for the most part, Wheeler has pitched well recently.  It just so happens that he is on a team whose offense is only averaging 2.3 runs in their last 3 games.  With that being said, Wheeler has had little experience against this Blue Jays squad and will keep them occupied for much of his time out; However, Toronto is 6-1 at Rodgers Centre in their last 7 games and will certainly find a way in which to win and to also set the tone for this series on Tuesday night.  Take the Blue Jays to prevail in game 1.

Totals Selection: Game 2: Under

My reason for the prediction :

With the pitchers for this game not being known, I must revert back to the fact that both these teams continue to be up and down on offense, thus allowing me to feel as if the under will be the play in this short series (in both games).  Again, the Mets are averaging barely over 2 runs per game in their last few outings while the Jays have struggled quite a bit as well putting up only an average of just over 3 runs.  I see this as a very mediocre matchup between slumping clubs who both possess the inconsistency (at the mound and the plate) that has caused them to consistently play terrible baseball for much of the season.  I expect very few runs to be scored while the game will certainly be competitive as the Jays and Mets desperately need a win at this point.
