Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

San Diego Padres vs Oakland Athletics

Game 1 of a 2-game set between the San Diego Padres and the Oakland Athletics will take place at Oakland Alameda Coliseum in Oakland, California, on Tuesday night at 9:05 pm EST.  The Padres continue to occupy 5th place within the NL West division while the A’s are currently in 3rd place within the AL West.  In their last outing, the Padres were 4-3 home winners over the Pittsburgh Pirates on 6-30-2018 behind a strong pitching performance from Joey Lucchesi (3-4) who pitched 5 innings while allowing 0 runs on 5 hits, 4 walks, and 5 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.26.  The up and down offense for the Padres could only muster 5 hits for the game with Wil Myers went 3-4 for the night with 3 RBI’s while Freddy Galvis went 0-3 for the night with an RBI.  Trevor Williams (6-6) took the loss for the Pirates who have lost 7 of their last 10 games, as he went 4.2 innings while allowing 4 runs on 4 hits, 1 homer, and 4 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.22.  San Diego cashed in on the money line as favorites (-140) while the under was the play in that the total was set at 7.5 runs for the game.

The Oakland Athletics were 7-2 home winners over the Cleveland Indians on 6-30-2018 to go up 2-0 in a 3-game set at Oakland Alameda.  The A’s cashed in on the money line as slight underdogs (+115) while the under was the play in that the total was set at 9.5 runs for the game.  Dustin Fowler went 2-4 for the night with an RBI while Mark Canha, Khris Davis, Stephen Piscotty, and Josh Phegley each had a hit with a combined 4 RBI’s.  Edwin Jackson (1-0) picked up the win in what was a great outing as he pitched 6.2 innings and allowing only 2 runs on 2 hits and 6 strikeouts.  To his debit, Jackson surrendered 2 homers in this outing.  The losing pitcher was Adam Plutko (4-2) as he went 5.2 innings while allowing 3 runs on 5 hits, 1 homer, and 3 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.66.

San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :

The Padres come into this matchup losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U has been 2-3.  The Padres recently lost a 3-game road set versus the Texas Rangers on 6-27-2018 by losing 5-2 in the finale.  Though they would lose game 1 of their following series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PetCo Park on 6-29-2018, they would tie the series in game 2 by picking up the slim 4-3 win.

For the season, San Diego averages 3.72 runs per game (27th) with a team batting average of .234 (27th), 70 homers (27th) and 46 stolen bases on the year (9th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.09 (18th) with 722 strikeouts (10th) and 30 quality starts thus far (26th).

Jose Pirela (.263 BA on 312 AB), Eric Hosmer (.273 BA on 311 AB), and Freddy Galvis (.238 BA on 303 AB) have been the few bright spots for this San Diego squad.

Tyson Ross (5-5) has pitched 95 innings while allowing 38 runs on 78 hits, 10 homers, 35 walks, and 90 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.32 has also been solid at the mound.  Clayton Richard (7-7) has been improving for the Padres this season and has pitched 107 innings while allowing 53 runs on 99 hits, 10 homers, 33 walks, and 84 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.29.

Oakland Athletics's Latest Performance :

The Oakland Athletics have won their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4.  Recently, the A’s would tie a 5-game road set versus the Chicago White Sox on 6-24-2018 with game 1 being postponed due to weather conditions.  They would come out in an offensive high against the Detroit Tigers in a 3-game road set and would ultimately sweep the series, altogether, on 6-28-2018 with a 4-2 win in the finale.  The A’s would extend their winning play into their next series as they won the first 2 of a 3-game home set versus the Cleveland Indians to where they have scored 10 runs for the series compared to only 3 for the Indians.

For the season, the Athletics are averaging 4.62 runs per game (9th) with a team batting average of .244 (16th), 112 homers (5th), along with 16 stolen bases (30th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.00 (16th) with 629 strikeouts (26th) along with 38 quality starts on the season (9th).

Jed Lowrie (.291 BA on 326 AB), Stephen Piscotty (.253 BA on 261 AB), Marcus Semien (.249 BA on 338 AB), and Matt Chapman (.250 BA on 244 AB) have been the offensive leaders for the Athletics this year while Matt Olson (.239 BA on 305 AB) and Khris Davis (.231 B on 281 AB) have also been critical components to the offense for Oakland.

Sean Manaea (8-6, 106.2 IP, 42 R, 83 H, 15 HR, 20 BB, 77 SO, 3.38 ERA) and Daniel Mengden (6-6, 90.2 IP, 50 R, 87 H, 15 HR, 19 BB, 55 SO, 4.47 ERA) have been the leaders for this Oakland pitching staff all year.

How San Diego Padres & Oakland Athletics Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Athletics are 40-44 ATS while the O/U is 41-38-5.  On the other hand, the Padres are 41-44 ATS while the O/U is 38-45-2.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Clayton Richard (7-7) will come to the mound for San Diego on Tuesday night looking to rebound after an outing in which he pitched 7 innings while allowing 4 runs on 10 hits in a 5-2 road loss to the Texas Rangers on 6-27-2018.  Despite his last loss, the Padres are 5-1 in Richard’s last 6 starts while the over has been the result in 3 of this last 4 starts.  The lefty has given up only 9 runs in his last 4 starts and have experience facing Khris Davis (0-4), Jonathan Lucroy (.308 BA on 13 AB), Stephen Piscotty (3-4), and Matt Joyce (1-1) for the A’s in the past.

Neither pitchers for game 2 have been named, however, it could certainly be said that this will be a series of two teams that are trending in separate directions.  After a competitive streak to where the Padres won 12 of 17, they have since lost 11 of their last 14 games while only averaging a tad over 2 runs per game during this time.  The A’s are heating up once again, on the other hand, and are averaging 5.1 runs per game in their last 6 games.  Also, with an Oakland pitching staff that has only allowed an average of 5 runs in their last 4 outings, this could certainly be yet another dry series for San Diego.

Against The Spread Selection: Game 1 & Game 2: Oakland Athletics

My reason for the pick :

I will back the Athletics to sweep this short, 2-game set on Wednesday night.  At this point in the season, the Padres continue to reel and are attempting to find answers to their offensive woes.  They simply will be no match against an Oakland team that has really shined lately.  Though they have not been able to make any headway within their respective division; However, a couple wins versus an inconsistent Padres team will help their efforts tremendously.  Though I feel that Richard has improved as the season progresses, as has been the case with the lefty (along with many of pitchers for the Padre pitching staff), he will not receive adequate run support for San Diego to get the victory on Tuesday.  With that being said, I will certainly pick Oakland to set the tone for the series in game 1 with a dominant win over the Padres.  Though the pitchers have not been named for game 2, with the way the past few outings have gone for the A’s, I will also pick them to continue their stellar play both on the mound and at the plate to get the series sweep as well as obtain momentum for their next series at Progressive Field against the Indians.
