In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Series starters for the Giants have not been announced, however, Kyle Hendricks (5-8) will come to the hill for the Cubs looking to put in an all-around, solid performance, something that he has not done in quite some time.  Hendricks received the no decision in his last outing when he pitched 5 innings while allowing 3 runs on 7 hits in a 5-3 home win versus the Detroit Tigers on 7-3-2018.  The right-hander is credited with 4 runs per average in his last 4 games while the under has been the play in 4 of his last 6 games.  The Cubs, overall, are 2-4 with Hendricks on the mound in his last 6 starts.  In his last outing versus the Giants, the righty was remarkable in pitching 7 innings while allowing 1 run on only 2 hits, 1 homer, and 7 strikeouts in a 6-2 home win on 5-25-2018.

Brandon Belt (.5-10), Brandon Crawford (.375 BA on 8 AB), Andrew McCutchen (.227 BA on 22 AB), Joe Panik (.375 BA on 8 AB), Hunter Pence (.750 BA on 4 AB), Buster Posey (.214 BA on 14 AB), and Pablo Sandoval (1-2) have all feasted-on Hendricks in the past.  Alen Hanson and Nick Hundley are a combined 0-5 against Hendricks in their careers.

Jose Quintana (7-6) will get the start for the Cubs in game 2 looking to build from his last outing where he pitched 6 innings while allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, 2 homers, and 4 strikeouts in a 5-2 home win versus the Detroit Tigers on 7-4-2018.  He is credited with 15 earned runs in his last 6 appearances while the over has been the play in 4 of his last 6 starts.  Overall, the Cubs are 4-2 in Quintana’s last 6 outings.  In his last outing versus the Giants, Quintana was disastrous in pitching 4.1 innings while allowing 4 runs on 5 hits, 1 homer, and 6 strikeouts in a 5-4 home loss on 5-26-2018.

Austin Jackson (.333 BA on 24 AB), Andrew McCutchen (.444 BA on 9 AB), Nick Hundley (2-4), Gorkys Hernandez (1-3), and Joe Panik (1-5) have had experience and success against Quintana in recent matchups.  Brandon Crawford (.167 BA on 6 AB), on the other hand, along with Hunter Pence (0-6) and Pablo Sandoval (.143 BA on 7 AB) have not fared nearly as well against the left-hander lifetime.

Against The Spread Selection: Game 1: Giants/

My reason for the pick :

With the success that the Giants have had against a shaky Kyle Hendricks of the Cubs, I would expect this trend to continue in the opener as the Giants have been struggling at the plate recently and will certainly be looking to face an opposing pitcher that they have maintained the upper hand against in the past.  Hendricks has not won since the middle of last month due to his suspect pitching lately, and I see the Giants really taking advantage of his inconsistencies on Monday.  In all, the Giants will certainly set the tone for the series with a huge game 1 victory over the Cubs.

While the Giants will win the opener, the Cubs will battle back in game 2 behind Jose Quintana to tie the series outright.  While Austin Jackson and Andrew McCutchen have had success against the lefty, many in the lineup have struggled against him lifetime.  With that being said, with the Cubs being 6-3 in Quintana’s last start combined with the fact that he will be looking to get his 2nd win in as many starts, Chicago will most certainly take back the momentum from game 1 and pick up a low-scoring win against the Giants on Tuesday in game 2.

Totals Selection: Game 3: Under

My reason for the prediction :

The Under has been the play in the Cubs last 3 matchups while it has been the result in 6 of the last 8 for the Giants.  With the Giants averaging only 1.6 runs in their last 5 games compared to a Cubs pitching staff that has only surrendered 2.6 runs in their last 3 along with the Cubs only averaging 4 runs in their last 3 games, I can certainly see the finale being another low-scoring contest where the game will be won on great pitching throughout the duration.  In all, expect not too many runs to be scored in this contest as both will be locked in to end the series on a winning note.
