Washington Nationals vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates will welcome the Nationals to PNC Park as the two teams will go head to head in a three-game series starting on Monday. The Pirates are 4th in the NL Central division while the Nationals are 3rd in the NL East. This will be their 2nd meeting of the season, in the first meeting the Nationals ended up sweeping the Pirates at home 4-0.

Game 1&2: 7:05 PM ET

Game 3: 12:35 PM ET

Washington Nationals's Latest Performance :

The Nationals will begin their 7 game road trip against the Pirates, they are 20-23 when playing on the road this season they are now in 3rd place of the NL East division and 5 games back of the division leader the Phillies. Playing against the Pirates would give them the opportunity to cut into the gap. Coming into this series they are 10th in pitching with a 3.80 ERA and 20th in batting with 372 runs scored this season. The Nationals are coming off a huge comeback victory against the Marlins they scored 13 from the 5th inning onwards. The momentum is on the Nationals side when entering this road trip. The Nationals starting pitchers are starting to find their confidence on the mound again.

Player to watch in this series: Trea Turner, he is coming off a huge performance in the last series where he was able to pick up 8 RBI in a single game. He went 3-for-5 with a pair of homers including a grand slam. The Nationals spotted the Marlins a nine-run lead before his solo homer in the fourth inning got the Nats on the board. A four-run fifth inning, in which he contributed an RBI groundout. He has 11 homers to go with 22 stolen bases, and he’s hitting .282/.359/.427 through 87 games. No one expected this type of performance from him but I expect him to carry over his confidence on the plate into this long road trip. Once the starting pitchers find their confidence again the Nationals will become unstoppable.

Team leaders:

  • RBIs: Bryce Harper (50)
  • Homers: Bryce Harper (21)
  • Batting Average: Trea Turner (.282)

Probable Pitchers for this series:

Game 1: Jefry Rodriguez, he has been called up from the triple-A to fill in for Fedde he will take the mound for the Nationals on Monday against the Pirates. He has a 5.93 ERA in two starts and one relief appearance this season in the Majors.

Game 2: Jemery Hellickson, he allowed nine runs eight earned on nine hits over four innings in a no-decision Thursday against the Marlins. He will have to turn things around on Tuesday. He has a 3.81 ERA and 1.13 WHIP while remaining 2-1 on the year.

Game 3: Gio Gonzalez, he struggled in a no-decision against the Marlins on Friday, allowing two runs on eight hits and four walks over his five innings of work. He’ll look to improve his 3.76 ERA and 1.47 WHIP when he takes on the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh Pirates's Latest Performance :

The Pirates are currently on an 11 game homestand as they will take on the Nationals in a 3 game series. The Pirates are 4th in the NL Central division with a record of 40-47 and they are 21-22 when playing at home this season. After a great start to the year, the Pirates have gone the complete opposite losing 4 straight games and it is starting to look like a lost season for them. They are coming off a blowout loss against the Phillies where they gave up 17 runs at home. The Pirates have lost 30 of their last 44 games. They have been outscored 48-13, over the last four games while twice allowing 17 runs. Everyone on the team has to play better in order to turn this season around it starts from the batters all the way down to the bullpen. Coming into this series the Pirates are 18th in batting with 382 runs scored this season and 22nd in pitching with a 4.53 ERA.

Player to watch in this series: Starling Marte, he went 2-for-4 with an RBI and stole a season-high three bases. He stole his 200th career base in the fourth inning off rookie southpaw Austin Davis and followed it up with two more off veteran Tommy Hunter in the sixth inning. He’s up to 21 steals in 75 games and is one of only five hitters with 20-plus stolen bases this season. He’s also slashing .269/.320/.442 with nine home runs, 44 runs scored and 37 RBI in 309 plate appearances. He remains one of the bright spots on the Pirates as he should play well against the Nationals at home.

Team leaders:

  • RBIs:  Gregory Polanco (43)
  • Homers: Gregory Polanco (12)
  • Batting Average: Corey Dickerson (.309)

Probable Pitchers for this series:

Game 1: Ivan Nova, he allowed seven earned runs, nine hits, and two walks over five innings with three strikeouts in a loss on the road against the Dodgers on Tuesday. He now has a 4.48 ERA as he will look to play better on Monday against the Nationals.

Game 2: Joe Musgrove, he should be able to return on time after suffering a right index finger infection. He owns a 3.79 ERA and 1.39 WHIP through 7 starts this season. He tossed seven scoreless innings in his last start.

Game 3: Trevor William, he was hit for five runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings in Friday’s loss to the Phillies. He had no strikeouts in his last performance which is very concerning. He falls to 6-7 overall with a 4.60 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 94 innings. He’s dropped four of his last five starts dating back to June 12. He will close things out for the Pirates against the Nationals.

Against The Spread Selection: Washington Nationals

My reason for the pick :

The Nationals will keep the momentum going as they will start off the 7 game road trip with a 2-1 series win over the Pirates, the Nationals players will have the confidence from their previous series against the Marlins as they will be able to start this road trip on the right foot. The starting pitchers of the Nationals will keep getting better as they will remind us again why they were ranked 2nd best in pitching a month ago. The Nationals will have their eyes on the top spot of the division. As for the Pirates, they will continue to struggle as they will have a hard time to score against the exquisite pitching from the Nationals.

Game 1&3 will go to the Nationals while the Pirates will be able to win game 2.
