Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
New York Yankees vs Miami Marlins
Game 1 of a 4-game set between the NY Yankees and the Cleveland Indians will take place at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio, on Thursday night at 7:10 pm EST. The Yankees continue to occupy 2nd place within the AL East behind the Boston Red Sox while the Indians sit atop the AL Central division a full 8 games ahead of the Minnesota Twins, the 2nd place team. In their last outing, the Yankees had a full day on 7-9-2018 as a double-header took place at Camden Yards against a struggling Orioles team to which they received the split. In a 5-4 game 1 loss, CC Sabathia (6-4) pitched 5 innings while allowing 5 runs on 7 hits, 2 homers, and 4 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.34. While the Yanks held two separate leads during this game, the Orioles would strike back each time as Jordan Shoop was 3-4 for the night while Danny Valencia was 1-3 with 3 RBI’s. Mark Trumbo was 1-3 with 2 RBI’s while Manny Machado was 1-4 in the slim 5-4 home victory. The Yankees, though scoring early in the matchup, were never able to get anything going late in the game; However, Giancarlo Stanton was 2-4 with an RBI while Aaron Judge, Neil Walker, and DiDi Gregorius also had an RBI in the loss. Jimmy Yacabonis received the no decision as he lasted 5 innings while allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, 1 homer, and 5 strikeouts with an ERA of 7.15. The Orioles cashed in on the money line as huge underdogs (+220) as can be expected, nonetheless, the under was the play in that the total was set at 10 runs for the game.
In the 2nd end of the doubleheader, the Yankees bounced back with a 10-2 win as they would cover on the money line again as favorites (-190) while the over was the play in that the total was set at 9.5 runs. The Yanks had 17 hits in this matchup as Brett Gardner was 4-6 with 3 RBI’s while DiDi Gregorius and Neil Walker were both 2-4 with Gregorius having an RBI. Austin Romine was 2-5 with 3 RBI’s for New York. Luis Cessa (1-1) picked up his first win of the season as he pitched 6 innings while giving up no runs on only 3 hits and 4 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.00 while the losing pitcher was Yefry Ramirez (0-3) who lasted only 4 innings as he allowed 4 runs on 9 hits, 1 homer, and 4 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.93. The O’s were the team who went cold in this contest as they were only able to obtain 5 hits for the game with Tim Beckham going 2-3 with 2 RBI’s in the loss.
The Cleveland Indians were 7-5 losers to their in-state rival Cincinnati Reds in interleague play on 7-9-2018 to where the Reds cashed in on the money line (+160) while the over was the play in that the total was set at 9.5 runs for the game. The winning pitcher was Anthony DeSclafani (4-1) who pitched 7 solid innings while allowing 1 run on 5 hits, 1 homer, and 3 strikeouts for an ERA of 4.43. The losing pitcher for the Indians was Mike Clevinger (7-4) who went 6 innings yet allowing 5 runs on 7 hits, 1 homer, and 11 strikeouts for an ERA of 3.34. The Indians got 10 hits on the night, however, left 7 runners on base for the game. Jason Kipnis and Michael Brantley each were 2-4 with a combined 3 RBI’s while Yonder Alonso was 1-3 with an RBI. Scott Schebler was 4-5 in this game with 3 RBI’s while Tucker Barnhart was 2-4 in the victory with 2 RBI’s. The loss was the Indians’ 3rd straight.
New York Yankees's Latest Performance :
The Yankees have won 3 of their last 5 matchups to where the O/U was 2-3. Recently, the Yankees would not only win a 3-game home set versus the Atlanta Braves on 7-4-2018, they would also take this momentum into their next series against the Toronto Blue Jays as they would win the last 2 games of the series to pick up their 4th series win in a row. They would go on to tie a double-header against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on 7-9-2018 by winning game 2 by a 10-2 score after dropping game 1 by a slim 5-4 outcome.
For the season, the Yankees average 5.17 runs per game (2nd) with a team batting average of .251 (10th), 150 home runs (1st), along with 38 stolen bases (20th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.43 (2nd) with 894 strikeouts (2nd), along with 41 quality starts on the season (9th).
Aaron Judge (.281 BA on 327 AB), Didi Gregorius (.255 BA on 325 AB), and Brett Gardner (.260 BA on 292 AB) have been outstanding for the Yankees this year at the plate. Giancarlo Stanton (.272 BA on 346 AB) and Miguel Andujar (.279 BA on 298 AB) have also been solid at the plate thus far.
On the other hand, Luis Severino (14-2) has pitched 123.1 innings while allowing 30 runs on 88 hits, 8 homers, 31 walks, and 143 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.12 while C.C. Sabathia (6-4) is also an important piece to the Yankee pitching staff as he has pitched 94.1 innings while allowing 44 runs on 94 hits, 13 homers, 27 walks, and 75 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.34.
Miami Marlins's Latest Performance :
The Cleveland Indians come into this matchup losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-2-1. Recently, the Indians would sweep a 3-game road set versus the Kansas City Royals on 7-4-2018. This momentum, of course, would not translate into their next series as they would fall in a 3-game home set versus the Oakland Athletics on 7-8-2018. Of course, they would come out flat against a surging Reds team in interleague play on 7-9-2018 and would suffer the 7-5 home loss.
For the season, the Indians are averaging 5.00 runs per game (5th) with a team batting average of .254 (7th), 121 homers (5th) along with 68 stolen bases (4th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.97 (15th) with 805 strikeouts (8th), along with 56 quality starts, good for 2nd in the MLB.
Jose Ramirez (.288 BA on 337 AB) and Francisco Lindor (.398 BA on 363 AB) have spearheaded the Indians offensive attack this season. Yonder Alonso (.255 BA on 282 AB) and Edwin Encarnacion (.229 BA on 301 AB) have struggled a bit, yet, continue to be offensive leaders for the Indians. Jason Kipnis (.220 BA on 309 AB) has also struggled thus far in the young season.
Corey Kluber (12-4, 126.1 IP, 37 R, 96 H, 17 HR, 15 BB, 123 SO, 2.49 ERA) and Trevor Bauer (8-6, 121.1 IP, 40 R, 95 H, 5 HR, 37 BB, 156 SO, 2.45 ERA) have been the most consistent thus far. Mike Clevenger (7-4, 116 IP, 44 R, 104 H, 8 HR, 39 BB, 110 SO, 3.34 ERA) and Carlos Carrasco (9-5, 96.2 IP, 47 R, 92 H, 13 HR, 22 BB, 103 SO, 4.28 ERA) have been very solid in their own right thus far in the season and are bright spots for Cleveland’s pitching staff.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:
Unfortunately, the pitchers for either game in this series have not been named, however, there are many trends and facts to go on in which to better break down this matchup. The fact is that the Yankees have dominated this series in recent matchup in winning 6 of the last 8 games while the Indians have won 4 of the last 6 games at Progressive Field against the boys from the Bronx. The Yankees are competing strong for the top spot in their division against the Red Sox and have won 9 of 15 outings while the Indians have slowed down a bit recently in losing their last 3 games after a 5-game winning streak. Their struggles began after a 10-4 game 1 win versus the Oakland A’s at home. After this game, the Indians have gone 0-3 while the offense has averaged only 2.6 runs per game while the pitching staff has surrendered a total of 19 runs during this time. The Yanks have maintained their swing in recent games as they are averaging 6 runs in their last 4 games to where they went 3-1 while the pitching staff has allowed an average of 3.2 runs during this time. In all, with both these teams either looking to maintain their current seeding, or, to overtake the top spot, altogether, this should certainly be an interesting weekend matchup with huge ramifications, particularly, for the Yanks who really need to string together a set of wins at this point to keep in sight of their goal of catching the Sox.
Against The Spread Selection: Games 1, 4: Cleveland Indians/Games 2 & 3: New York Yankees
My reason for the pick :
While the Yankees certainly have some dangerous bats on their side along with a solid pitching staff in which to bring to the mound, the fact is that they are 14-6 in game 1’s this season. The interesting thing is that in their last 6 game 1’s, they are only 2-4. All of these games have been the under as the Yankees averaged 3.6 runs while the pitching surrendered a total of 21 runs. It is for this reason that I see game 1 as being a very close contest to where both teams will certainly be looking to set the tone. In all, I see the Indians coming out winners in the opener and asserting their dominance on their home field where they are 28-16 for the season.
I will also take the Indians in game 4 to tie this series oin n Sunday in that the Yankees will most certainly recover from their game 1 loss; However, the Indians will have to endure their wrath in games 2 & 3 in that they will be focused on matching the intensity that the home team displayed in the opener. Game 4 will see the Indians neutralize the Yankees bats just enough to get some runs in along with a hard-fought victory in the end. In all, the Indians will squeak by the Yanks in the finale.
As stated, the Yankees will indeed recover from their game 1 loss to the Indians on Thursday. While their game 1 record this year may not be the best (as of late), the Yankees tend to dominate in games 2 and 3, particularly in 4-series, in going 12-3 in their last 15. With that being said, I will expect the Yanks to bounce back in winning fashion to take the 2-1 lead heading into the finale on Sunday.
