Arizona Diamondbacks vs Atlanta Braves

Game 1 of a 3-game set versus the visiting Arizonan Diamondbacks and the Atlanta Braves will take place at SunTrust Park in Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday night at 7:35 pm EST.  The Diamondbacks continue to be in the top spot in the NL West division while the Braves are in 2nd place within the NL East division.  In their last outing, the D’backs were 4-3 home losers to the San Diego Padres on 7-8-2018.  The Padres capitalized as underdogs and cashed in on the money line (+175) while the under was the play in that the total was set at 7.5 runs for the game.  Paul Goldsmidt went 3-6 for the game while AJ Pollack and Jeff Mathis had 2 hits apiece with a combined 3 RBI’s.  Zack Greinke got the no decision as he pitched only 4.1 innings while allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 5 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.39. The Braves were 10-3 road losers to the Milwaukee Brewers on 7-8-2018 as they would lose their 2nd straight series in a row.  Milwaukee would cash in on the money line as slight favorites in the finale (-120) while the over was the play with the total being set at 8.5 runs for the game.  Freddie freeman was 3-4 with an RBI while Tyler Flowers was 1-1 also with an RBI in the loss for the Braves.  Sean Newcombe (8-4) was the losing pitcher as he went 3.2 innings while allowing 5 runs on 5 hits, 1 homer, and 3 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.44.  Junior Guerra (6-5) picked up the win for the Brew Crew as he lasted 6 innings while allowing only 1 run on 7 hits and 4 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.79.  Jesus Aguilar was 2-4 with 4 RBI’s in the win while Hernan Perez was 1-3 with 3 RBI’s on the night.  The Braves would also go on to lose game 1 of a 3-game home set versus the Blue Jays by a 6-2 score on 7-10-2018.

Arizona Diamondbacks's Latest Performance :

The Arizona Diamondbacks have won 3 of their last 5 game to where the O/U was 2-3.  Recently, the D’backs would drop a 3-game home set to the St. Louis cardinals on 7-4-2018.  After losing game 1 of their next 4-game home set versus the Padres by a 6-3 score, they have since outscored San Diego in games 2 & 3 by a combined 23 runs to 6 to go up 2 games to 1 in the set.  The Dbacks would go on the lose in the finale by a 4-3 score to tie the series.

For the season, the D’backs average 4.48 runs per game (12th) with a team batting average of .231 (28th), 104 homers (16th) along with 50 stolen bases (10th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.49 (3rd) with 806 strikeouts (9th) along with 41 quality starts for the season (7th).

David Peralta (.290 BA on 328 AB) and A.J. Pollock (.287 BA on 171 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Diamondbacks thus far.  Paul Goldschmidt (.280 BA on 331 AB) and Nick Ahmed (.229 BA on 297 AB) have also been solid offensively for Arizona this season.

Patrick Corbin (6-3, 116.1 IP, 40 R, 88 H, 11 HR, 34 BB, 146 SO, 3.09 ERA) and Zack Greinke (9-5, 114 IP, 44 R, 108 H, 16 HR, 23 BB, 117 SO, 3.39 ERA) have pitched the most innings for the D’backs this season while Zack Godley (10-6, 99.1 IP, 59 R, 103 H, 12 HR, 52 BB, 101 SO, 4.80 ERA) has also been solid on the mound thus far.

Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :

The Braves come into this game losers of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U is 3-2.   Recently, the Braves would lose a 3-game road set to the ever-dangerous New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on 7-4-2018.  They would not recover in their following series, a 4-game road set versus the Milwaukee Brewers, as they would drop their 2nd series in a row on 7-8-2018.  They would go on to drop game 1 of a 3-game home set at SunTrust Park on 7-10-2018 against the Blue Jays by a 6-2 score.

For the season, the Braves are averaging 4.90 runs per game (6th) with a team batting average of .259 (4th), 98 homers (18th) along with 51 stolen bases (8th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.88 (13th) with 806 strikeouts (10th) along with 38 quality starts on the season (17th).

Freddie Freeman (.312 BA on 346 AB), Nick Markakis (.324 BA on 355 AB), Ryan Flaherty (.248 BA on 137 AB), and Ozzie Albies (.285 BA on 389 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Braves all season.  Dansby Swanson (.247 BA on 288 AB) and Ender Inciarte (.244 BA on 356 AB) have also been consistent at the plate for the Braves.

Mike Foltynewicz (6-5, 95 IP, 29 R, 65 H, 8 HR, 40 BB, 114 SO, 2.37 ERA) and Sean Newcomb (8-4, 99.1 IP, 41 R, 78 H, 10 HR, 49 BB, 95 SO, 3.44 ERA) have been bright spots on the mound for the Braves this year.  Julio Teheran (6-6, 99.1 IP, 47 R, 73 H, 18 HR, 48 BB, 92 SO, 4.26 ERA has also been serviceable for Atlanta in 2018.

How Arizona Diamondbacks & Atlanta Braves Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Braves are 47-43 ATS while the O/U is 43-40-4.  On the other hand, the Diamondbacks are 49-43 ATS while the O/U is 43-44-5.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The pitchers for either team have not been announced, however, the Braves are winners of 4 of the last 6 meetings while winning 3 straight at SunTrust Park.  The over has been the result in 4 of the last 6 games against these two squads.  While the Braves began their 10-game road trip that covered 3 cities on a great note (going 4-0 in 1st 4 games), they have since floundered a bit in losing 6 of their last 7 games overall.  During this time, the offense has also sputtered in averaging a tad over 3 runs per game while the pitching staff has been awful in surrendering 43 runs during this time.  The D’backs have heated up lately in winning 3 of their last 4 games while the offense is putting up an average of almost 9 runs per.  Their pitching staff has also settled back in as they are allowing opponents an average of 3.2 runs per game during this time.  In all, expect for both teams to be locked in during this series in that the Braves certainly want to catch the Phillies who occupy the top spot in the NL East before the All-Star break as they are only 1 game behind.  On the other hand, the Diamondbacks look to further separate themselves from the 2nd place Dodgers in the NL West as the break approaches.

Against The Spread Selection: Games 1 & 2: Arizona Diamondbacks

My reason for the pick :

The Braves have not played well at home lately and the loss to Toronto on Tuesday night means that they have picked up where they left off from their prior 6-game home stand where they went 2-4.  On the other hand, after a 10-game home stand to where they went 3-7, the D’backs will be looking to hit the road where they have been stellar lately in winning 9 of their last 11 games.  I expect Arizona to truly take advantage of the inconsistencies that are serving to plague the Atlanta Braves pitching staff at this point in the season.  Also, while the D’backs have not played well at SunTrust Park, there is much on the line for both teams in this series as Arizona looks to wrap up the first half of the season on a positive and winning note.  Atlanta, on the other hand, seems to be a burnt-out team at this point and will limp into the break in order to get some guys healthy and rested for the 2nd half of the campaign.  In all, pick the D’backs to win games 1 & 2 of this matchup on Friday and Saturday.

Totals Selection: Game 3: Over

My reason for the prediction :

The over has been the play in 4 of the last 6 games against these two teams.  Combine this with the fact that the result has been the play in 6 of the last 11 games for both these teams combined, I will not only look to the over in the finale, but, will consider it throughout the series, altogether.  With the runs that the Braves are giving up at this point, I will gladly choose the over, particularly, in game 3 in what will be an exciting finale against two dangerous teams looking to maintain their standing in their respective divisions.
