Game 1 of a 3-game set versus the Detroit Tigers and the Houston Astros will take place at Minute Maid Field in Houston, Texas, on Friday night beginning at 8:10 pm EST.  The Detroit Tigers are 2nd place in the AL Central division while the Astros are 1st place within the AL West division.   In their last outing, the Tigers were 10-9 road losers versus the Tampa Bay Rays on 7-9-2018 where Detroit cashed in on the money line as huge dogs (+190) while the over was the play in that the total was set at 7.5 runs for the game.  The Tigers had 13 hits in the game, however, left 11 batters on base throughout this contest.  Nicolas Castellanos was 3-4 for the night while Niko Goodrum was 2-6 with 3 RBI’s.  Victor Martinez was 1-4 with 2 RBI’s and Jose Iglesias was 1-5 with 2 RBI’s in the loss.  Francisco Liriano got the no decision as he went only 2.1 innings while allowing 7 runs on 8 hits, 1 homer, and 3 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.74.  Chris Archer also received the no decision for the Rays as he pitched only 3.1 innings while allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.4.1.  Carlos Gomez went 3-5 for the Rays with 3 RBI’s in the victory.  In game 2 of this matchup on 7-10-2018, the Tigers were 5-2 losers to go down 2-0 in this series with the finale being on 7-11-2018.

The Astros went down 1 game to none in the opener against the red-hot Oakland A’s on 7-9-2018 as they would suffer the 2-0 home loss behind a strong pitching performance from Frankie Montas who allowed 0 runs on only 3 hits in 6 innings of work with an ERA of 3.35.  Houston’s powerful offense could only obtain 5 hits for the game as George Springer was 2-4 for the night while Jose Altuve and Josh Reddick was each 1-4 in the loss.  Gerrit Cole pitched well yet received the no decision as he went 6 innings while giving up no runs on 3 hits and 11 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.57.  Oakland’s Steven Piscotty was 3-4 for the night with 2 RBI’s in the victory.  The A’s cashed in on the spread as huge underdogs as well (+190) while the under was the result with the total being set at 8.5 runs for the game.   The Astros would tie the series at 1 on 7-10-2018 with a slim, 6-5 home victory over the A’s to get back into the set.  Game 3 is set for 7-11-2018 at 8:10 pm EST at Minute Maid Park.

Detroit Tigers's Latest Performance :

The Detroit Tigers have lost 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-3-1.  The Tigers would be swept in a 2-game road set versus the Cubs on 7-4-2018 while getting the tie in a 4-game home set against the Texas Rangers on 7-8-2018.  The momentum from this series was lost in the first 2 games of a 3-game road set against the Rays as the Tigers would lose both games with game 2 being a 5-2 loss.

Currently, the Tigers are averaging 4.01 runs per game (23rd) with a team batting average of .248 (13th), 75 homers (29th), along with 43 stolen bases (15th).  Their pitching staff possesses an ERA of 4.39 (21st) with 704 strikeouts (28th), along with 37 quality starts on the year (20th).

Nicholas Castellanos (.306 BA on 363 AB), and Leonys Martin (.257 BA on 276 AB) spearhead the Tiger offensive attack.  Jeimer Candelario (.228 BA on 294 AB) along with Victor Martinez (.240 BA on 288 AB) have also been solid as well this season.

Mike Fiers (6-5) has pitched 98.2 while allowing 43 runs on 98 hits, 17 homers, 21 walks, and 74 strikeouts this year.  Matthew Boyd (4-8) has pitched 98.1 innings this year while allowing 53 runs on 83 hits, 12 homers, 36 walks, and 87 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.76 while Michael Fulmer (3-8) has pitched 107.1 innings while allowing 53 runs on 100 hits, 12 homers, 36 walks, and 91 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.11.

Houston Astros's Latest Performance :

The Houston Astros have won 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2.  Recently, the Astros would sweep a 2-game road set at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas, against the Rangers on 7-4-2018.  Houston would go on to win the first 2 games of a 4-game set against the Chicago White Sox by outscoring them by a total of 15-7 while also winning the last 2 games by a combined score of 13-7.  Their hot offensive play would not translate into game 1 of a 4-game home set against the Astros as they would drop the opener by a 2-0 score; Yet, they would rebound in game 2 by winnings 6-5.

For the season, Houston is averaging 5.09 runs per game (3rd) with a team batting average of .262 (3rd), 120 homers (7th), along with 51 stolen bases on the year (9th).  Their pitching staff ranks lowest in MLB stats with an ERA of 2.88 (1st) with 989 strikeouts (1st) along with 68 quality starts (1st).

Jose Altuve (.335 BA on 370 AB), Carlos Correa (.268 BA on 269 AB), Josh Reddick (265 BA on 230 AB), and Alex Bregman (.282 BA on 354 AB) has spearheaded the Astros offense throughout the year.  George Springer (.252 BA on 361 AB) has also been a solid contributor for the Astros at the plate.

Charlie Morton (11-2) has been consistent this year for Houston pitching 108 innings while allowing only 37 runs on 78 hits, 11 homers, 43 walks, and 141 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.82 while Justin Verlander (9-4) has pitched 131.2 innings thus far while allowing 32 runs on 85 hits, 12 homers, 24 walks, and 160 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.05.  Lance McCullers (10-3) has also been solid as he has pitched 108.1 innings while allowing 45 runs on 82 hits, 10 homers, 38 walks, 118 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.41.

How Detroit Tigers & Houston Astros Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Astros are 48-46 ATS while the O/U is 41-48-5.  On the other hand, the Tigers are 48-46 ATS while the O/U is 37-54-3.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This will be the 1st meeting amongst these two teams in 2018 with the Astros winning 4 of the last 7 games and 3 of the last 4 at Minute Maid Park.  The Astros continue to roll over their competition and have now won 7 of 8 coming into this matchup.  The Tigers, on the other hand, have gone through a rough patch lately in losing 6 of 8 contests.  In their last 6 losses, the offense for the Tigers have only put up 21 runs while the pitching staff has surrendered 35 runs during this time.  The Astros have been on fire lately from the plate in averaging 4.4 runs in their last 4 outings while their pitching staff have matched that intensity surrendering 18 runs during this time (3.6 runs/game).  In all, expect this to be another interesting series as Houston looks to continue to separate itself from its opponents within the AL West while the Tigers simply look to get back into the win column.  It will not be easy against a Houston team that is 30-18 at home on the year.

Against The Spread Selection: Game 1, 2, 3, 4: Houston Astros

My reason for the pick :

The Detroit Tigers have played horrible lately, as stated.  They have lost 17 of 21 games, altogether, while being 2-9 in their last 11 road games.  Their offense has seemingly gone nonexistent and with such a solid pitching staff in the Astros, this series could be a bit miserable, once again, for the Tigers.  On the other hand, their pitching has been awful in taking up the slack for the offense which will not bode well for them in that they will be facing one of the most dangerous offenses in the MLB in this matchup.  In all, expect Houston to cruise throughout this series.  It is not like the Tigers have been a stranger to being swept as they have not only been swept in 4 of their last 6 series, but, they are also on the verge of being swept in their current 3-game road set versus the Tampa Bay Rays.
