St. Louis Cardinals vs Chicago Cubs
All-Star weekend is now history and it’s time for teams to get back to work. The St. Louis Cardinals do so by visiting the first place Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field beginning Thursday night for a four-game divisional series. The Cardinals currently sit 7.5 games back in third place in the NL Central. Prior to the All-Star break, the Cardinals stole game three of their series with the Cincinnati Reds and are currently on a one-game win streak. The Cubs rolled into the break on a three-game win streak after shutting out the San Diego Padres in their series.
The three times these two division rivals have met this year, the Cubs have been on the losing end going a surprising 3-5 against the Cards. Those prior series featured everything including a couple of extra-inning games, blowouts, shutouts, and a pair of early season postponements. It will be interesting to see which team dusts off the rust the quickest and gets back to business.
St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :
The St. Louis Cardinals are in the playoff hunt and have been all season. They are in a tough division given the way the Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers have played this season along with a streaking Pittsburgh Pirates team who is knocking on their door after finishing out the season on a six-game win streak.
The second half of the season will be telling and not much easier than the first half. They still have a handful of dates with the Cubs and Brewers mixed in with the Braves and Dodgers. They will need every bit of help they can get and after firing their skipper Mike Matheny, maybe that will be the fire that gets them over the hump and into the playoffs.
Chicago Cubs's Latest Performance :
The Chicago Cubs have been dominant this season, but streaky. They have matched their longest streak at five a couple of times this season and look to do it again against the Cardinals in this series. Kyle Schwaber may have lost the home run derby, but that should only fuel his fire to prove himself at the plate for the second half of the season. He trails only fellow slugger Javier Baez by one home run at eighteen on the season for the Cubs.
On the mound for the Cubs this season, Jon Lester (12-2, 2.59 ERA) has been dominant. His twelve wins coupled with eighty-eight strike-outs not only lead his team but puts him among the leagues elite pitchers.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The series between the St. Lous Cardinals at the Chicago Cubs should be a fun series. They have seen it all this season and to kick-off, the second half of the season with these two division rivals makes for a highly competitive and entertaining series. The Cubs are clearly the better team and should win the series on paper, but that hasn’t been the case in the past. The Cardinals play them hard and have been winning more games. The Cubs will look to level the playing field and prove they are the better team but don’t count out the Cardinals. If they can turn the firing of their manager into a positive, the Cubs will have their hands full.
