Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Colorado Rockies vs Arizona Diamondbacks

Game 1 of a 3-game set between the Colorado Rockies and the Arizona Diamondbacks will take place at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, on Friday night at 9:40 pm EST.  The Rockies are now in 3rd place within the NL West division while the D’backs occupy the 2nd place slot behind the top ranked Dodgers.  In their last outing, the Rockies were 4-3 home winners versus the Seattle Mariners on 7-15-2018.  The Rockies would cash in on the money line as favorites (-160) while the under was the play in that the total was set at 11 runs for the game.  Colorado had 9 hits for the game with Ian Desmond, Charlie Blackmon, and Nolan Arenado had 2 hits apiece with Arenado having an RBI.  Chris Ianetta went 0-2 with an RBI in the win.  Tyler Anderson picked up the no decision as he lasted 6 innings while allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 6 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.72.  Mike Leake also did not receive a decision for the Mariners as he went 6 innings while allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 4 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.22.  Dee Gordon, Mitch Haniger, and Denard Span each had 2 hits apiece for Seattle in the loss with an RBI each.

The Arizona Diamondbacks were 5-1 road losers to the Atlanta Braves on 7-15-2018.  The Braves, who were struggling going into the All-Star Break, also cashed in on the money line as underdogs (+110) while the under was the play in that the total was set at 8.5 runs for the game.  The up and down D’backs lineup could only muster 5 hits for the game with Jon Jay going 1-4 with an RBI while Paul Goldsmidt, A.J. Pollack, and Jake Lamb each had a hit in the defeat.  Patrick Corbin (6-4) suffered the loss as he lasted 6 innings while allowing 4 runs on 6 hits with an ERA of 3.24.  Julio Teheran (7-6) got the much-needed win for Atlanta as he pitched 6.1 innings while allowing no runs on 4 hits and 6 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.00.  Dansby Swanson was 2-3 with an RBI in the win for the Braves while Freddie Freeman, Nick Markakis, and Ozzie Albies each had a hit and an RBI.

Colorado Rockies's Latest Performance :

The Colorado Rockies are winners of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-3.  Recently, the Rockies would come out blazing on the road against the Seattle Mariners as they took the 3-game set despite losing 6-4 in the finale.  In their following series, the Rockies would not only win a 3-game home set versus the D’backs on 7-12-2018, but, they would also sweep a 3-game home set versus Seattle on 7-15-2018.

For the season, the Rockies are averaging 4.86 runs per game (6th) with a team batting average of .258 (7th), 124 homers (9th), along with 51 stolen bases (12th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.68 (25th) with 806 strikeouts (18th), along with 44 quality starts (7th).

Arizona Diamondbacks's Latest Performance :

The Arizona Diamondbacks have lost 3 of their last 5 game to where the O/U was 1-4.  Recently, after tying a 4-game home set versus the San Diego Padres on 7-8-2018, the D’backs would drop a 3-game road set against the Colorado Rockies on 7-12-2018.  Despite losing the finale by a 5-1 score, Arizona was able to pick up a series win over the Atlanta Braves on 7-15-2018 to end the first half of the season on a winning note.

For the season, the D’backs average 4.34 runs per game (19th) with a team batting average of .229 (28th), 107 homers (16th) along with 52 stolen bases (9th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.63 (6th) with 845 strikeouts (10th) along with 43 quality starts for the season (8th).

David Peralta (.282 BA on 344 AB) and Paul Goldschmidt (.280 BA on 331 AB) have been the offensive stars for the Diamondbacks thus far.  Nick Ahmed (.230 BA on 309 AB) has also been solid offensively for Arizona this season.

How Colorado Rockies & Arizona Diamondbacks Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Rockies are 49-47 ATS while the O/U is 42-47-7.  On the other hand, the Diamondbacks are 51-46 ATS while the O/U is 44-48-5.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Once again, we have a matchup of two teams trending in the opposite directions.  On one hand, you have the D’backs who have struggled mightily on offense for a large part of the season while their pitching staff has stepped it up in the present of little to no offense in surrendering only 11 runs in their last 4 games.  The Arizona offense has been less than desirable as they have only averaged 1.6 runs in their last 5 games, overall.  The Rockies have been inconsistent as well on offense yet are averaging 8.4 runs in their last 5 games (mainly due to outings to where they hung 19 runs on the D’backs on 7-11-2018 & 10 runs on the Mariners, respectively) while the pitching staff has limited opponents to an average of 2.8 runs during this time.  In all, it will be interesting to see how the Rockies, who, as stated, has had bouts with inconsistency this season, take the field in this matchup after their recent success.  I am sure that both teams will be focused on beginning the final stretch of the season with a win over a division opponent.

Totals Selection: Games 1,2, & 3: Under

My reason for the prediction :

The under has been the play in 4 of the last 6 games for the Rockies despite their offense beginning to heat up; On the other hand, the under has been the result in 6 of the last 7 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Couple this with the fact that the D’backs are 26-20-3 as it relates to the under at home this year, I would say that it would certainly be a logical play in this instance.  In all, with Arizona’s struggling offense combined with the solid pitching of the Rockies staff along with the shaky bats for Colorado against the solid staff for the D’backs, I feel that the under would be the way to go in this weekend matchup against 2 NL West teams looking to gain some ground in what has been a hotly contested division.
