In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The pitchers for the Angels have not been announced for this series, however, the pitchers for games 1 & 2 for the White Sox have been determined as Lucas Giolito (6-8) will come to the hill in game 1 looking to win his 2nd straight after an outing to where he pitched 6.1 innings while allowing no runs on 2 hits versus the Royals on 7-15-2018 while the team is only 3-4 in his last 7 starts. The over has been the play in 4 of his last 6 starts while he has been credited with 10 earned runs on 17 hits in his last 4 appearances on the mound. Alarmingly so, Giolito has allowed 5 homers during this time. This will be the right-hander’s first matchup against the Angels’ lineup with Giolito possessing a slightly high ERA of 6.18 for the year. Ian Kinsler (0-2) and Justin Upton (0-3) have had experience facing the right-hander in the past.
For game 2, the White Sox will call on Carlos Rodon (2-3) to come to the mound in search of his 2nd straight victory as well. in his last 4 appearances, Rodon is only credited with 9 earned runs on 21 hits with 4 homers while the over has been the play in 3 of his last 5 outings (under is 2-0 in last 2 games). In all, the Sox are only 2-5 in Rodon’s last 7 starts. In his last outing, the lefty pitched 7.1 innings while allowing no runs on 3 hits and 7 strikeouts in a 4-0 home win versus the St. Louis Cardinals on 7-11-2018. In his last outing, Rodon was terrible in going only .1 innings while allowing 5 runs on 6 hits in a 7-0 home loss on 4-18-2018.
Justin Upton (2-6), Andrelton Simmons (1-1), Ian Kinsler (.375 BA on 8 AB), and Kole Calhoun (2-8) have had the most experience and success against Rodon in the past. Mike Trout is 0-5 against the lefty lifetime while Luis Valbuena is (0-5) in his respective career.
Totals Selection: Game 1, 2, 3, & 4: Over
My reason for the prediction :
One should really eye the over (as I will be) in each matchup during what will be an interesting series for both squads. While Giolito and Rodon have had their struggles at various points in the season, they have been solid, in limited experience, against the Angels lineup. The problem is that both pitchers are known to be erratic at times and provide boatloads of opportunities for teams to score. This will not do against a lineup such as the Angels who have a bevy of power hitters from which to choose from. Also keep in mind that the Angels staff has not performed up to expectations lately either as they have surrendered over 3 runs per outing in their last 9 contests. The White Sox have given up a total of 79 runs in their last 11 road games, overall. In all, look for a ton of runs to be scored in this matchup as both teams will be looking to perform well in their first series after the All-Star Break.
