New York Yankees vs Tampa Bay Rays
The New York Yankees begin a three-game series at Tropicana Field on Monday night against AL East division rival Tampa Bay Rays. Both teams kicked off the second half of their seasons with a loss on Friday putting them further behind the first-place Boston Red Sox.
The Yankees are 5.5 games back while the Rays sit 19 games back. The gap is closing between these two teams making division games that much more important as the playoffs begin to loom. Every team in MLB is chasing the Sox including the Yankees and Rays.
New York Yankees's Latest Performance :
The Yankees have had a solid season, but they seem to be losing ground on the Red Sox and are losing sight of a possible AL East Championship. Going 4-6 in their last ten games and losing the first after a short break, doesn’t bode well for the top contenders. That first game back was a painful one for two reasons. One, it was to their subway series rival, New York Mets. Two, it sent losing pitcher Domingo German packing back to Triple-A. Looks like management is sending the team a message.
Tampa Bay Rays's Latest Performance :
The Tampa Bay Rays are in the middle of the pack in the AL East behind two of the best teams in baseball. They continue to fight an uphill battle and are gaining ground on the struggling Yankees. They sent catcher Wilson Ramos to the All-Star game, but he alone can’t help this team win. He’s now on the disabled list with a hamstring injury for the next 10 days. A call to the Triple-A Bulls has sent Adam Moore to the majors backing up Jesus Sucre who will most likely start the bulk of the games in Ramos’ absence.

On paper, the Yankees are a far better team in all aspects. But, the Rays are resilient and know how to win.
