While no pitchers for the Cardinals have not been named, Mike Montgomery (3-3) will get the start for the Cubs in the opener on Friday looking to end a string of losses and no decisions in his last 3 starts in which to pick up a win at the mound. In his last outing, Montgomery pitched 6 innings while allowing 1 run on 6 hits and 3 strikeouts in a 6-3 home loss versus the Cardinals on 7-21-2018. In his meeting against the Cardinals prior to his last outing, he, in relief status, pitched 3 innings while allowing no runs on 3 hits in a 4-3 road loss on 5-6-2018. Montgomery is credited with 8 earned runs on 19 hits in his last 3 starts while the over has been the play in 4 of this last 5 appearances on the mound. The Cubs, in general, are 1-4 in the left-hander’s last 5 starts.

Jose Quintana (9-6) will come to the mound in game 2 looking to win his 4th straight game. He has pitched well lately and has only been credited with 4 earned runs on 14 hits with 13 strikeouts. The under has been the play in 2 of his last 3 outings while the team is 4-0 in his last 4 starts. Totals Selection: Games 1, 2, & 3: Over
My reason for the prediction :
I would love to simply pick the Cubs to come away with this all-important division showdown beginning on Friday, particularly due to the shaky play of the Cardinals lately and at various points throughout this season; Nonetheless, the Cubs have not played well coming out of the break while the Cards have been attempting to clean things up recently in going 3-3 since resuming play. This record is much better than their 6-10 record to end the 1st half of the 2018 campaign, as we know. With that being said, the Cardinals have still given up 4.1 runs in their last 7 games, which could offer a slither of hope to a Chicago Cubs squad that has averaged close to 5 runs per game during this time, yet, has only scored a total of 5 runs in their last 3 losses.
While I would like to think that the Cards would somehow be able to neutralize this dangerous Cubs lineup, however, I will not go so far as to say that this will materialize in this series. The over is 9-3-1 in the last 13 meetings between these two teams with the over being the result in 5 straight matchups. While the under has been the result in 2-straight games for the Cubs, the over has been the play in 9 of their last 11 games; Similarly, the trend has been the same for the Cards as they have also achieved the under in their last 2 games, however, the over has been the play in 8 of their last 10, overall. I see this as being a breakout series for one of these NL Central squads, however, one that will see the scoreboard light up throughout the weekend as these teams simply seem to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses all to well.
