In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The pitchers for the Angels in this series have not been named, however, the starting pitchers for games 1 & 2 for the Mariners have been determined.  With that being said, Wade Leblanc (6-1) will get the start in the opener and he will be looking to obtain his 4th win in 5 starts.  In his last outing, Leblanc pitched 7.1 innings while allowing 1 run on 4 hits and 10 strikeouts in a 3-1 home win versus the White Sox on 7-20-2018.  In his last outing versus the Angels, the left-hander lasted 7 innings while allowing only 1 run on 3 hits and 4 strikeouts in a 4-1 home win on 7-3-2018.  In his current solid streak, Leblanc is credited with 10 earned runs on 18 hits, yet, he has given up 4 homers during this time.  The mariners are 6-2 in last 8 starts by the lefty while the under has been the play in 3 of the last 4 appearances for Leblanc.  Finally, the left-hander is 2-1 with a 4.98 ERA with 16 strikeouts in his last 3 games.

David Fletcher (1-3), Martin Maldonado (4-5), Albert Pujols (1-4), Andrelton Simmons (1-3), and Mike Trout (1-5) have had the most success facing Leblanc in the past.  Jabari Blash (0-2), Kole Calhoun (0-2), Ian Kinsler (.125 BA on 8 AB), Jefry Marte (0-1), and Justin Upton (.111 BA on 9 AB) have struggled against the lefty lifetime.  Luis Valbuena is 0-3 versus Leblanc is his career.

For game 2, Felix Hernandez (8-8) will come to the hill to somehow halt a 2-game losing skid on the mound.  The Mariners are also 0-2 in his last 2 starts while going only 2-5 in his last 7 appearances on the mound.  The O/U has alternated in his last 8 starts while he has been credited with an average of 3 earned runs on 6 hits per game.  Hernandez has given up a homer in each of his last 4 starts.  In his last outing, Hernandez pitched 5 innings while allowing 4 runs on 5 hits, 1 homer, and 7 strikeouts in a 5-0 home loss to the Chicago White Sox on 7-21-2018.  In his last outing versus the Angels, the right-hander pitched 5.2 innings while surrendering 5 runs on 7 hits, 2 homers, and 5 strikeouts in an 8-2 home loss on 5-6-2018.  In all, he is 1-2 with an ERA of 5.40 with 12 strikeouts in his last 3 outings.

Luis Valbuena (2-3), Justin Upton (.273 BA on 11 AB), Mike Trout (.349 BA on 43 AB), Albert Pujols (.205 BA on 39 AB), Martin Maldonado (2-6), Ian Kinsler (2-10) have had the most experience along with success against Hernandez in the past.  Kole Calhoun (.140 BA on 43), Andrelton Simmons (.067 BA on 15 AB), Jefry Marte (.167 BA om 6 AB) and Jabari Blash (0-2) have struggled lifetime against the righty.

Against The Spread Selection: Game 1 & 3: Seattle Mariners/Game 2: Los Angeles Angels

My reason for the pick :

Wade Leblanc has really pitched well throughout the first half of the season and looks to continue this trend against a team that he has fared pretty well with in the past.  It is for this reason, along with the fact that I simply cannot call the over psyche of this Angels team from game to game, that I will back the Mariners on the road in this matchup.  One could have thought that the Angels were gearing up for a run after a huge finale win over the Astros, however, with the next couple games at home, they have stunk it up against the Sox.  With that being said, with the bats struggling the way there are for the Angels, expect the Mariners to capitalize in the opener and in the finale to crank out some huge division wins, thus preserving their spot behind the Astros.

While their play may be lackluster and inconsistent at this point, I believe that the Angels will see the importance of this matchup, if only for one game, and get the much-needed win the temporarily stop their bleeding.  Felix Hernandez has been tagged by many within the Angel lineup and he will certainly be welcomed by the home team as they will be focused at the plate in which to get some hits going along with score some much-needed runs.  In all, take the Angels to show and prove on Saturday in what will be a short-lived memory as the finale approaches on Sunday.
