Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Colorado Rockies vs St. Louis Cardinals

Game 1 of a 4-game set against the Colorado Rockies and the St. Louis Cardinals will take place at Busch Field in St. Louis, Missouri, on Monday night beginning at 8:10 pm EST.  The Rockies are in 3rd place within the always exciting NL West division while the Cardinals are in 4th place within the NL Central division.  In their last outing, the Colorado Rockies would win the finale of a 2-game home interleague set against the Houston Astros by picking up the 3-2 win on 7-26-2018.  Colorado would cash in on the money line as slight underdogs (+108) while the under was the play with runs being set at 9.5 for the game.  Jon Gray pitched 7 solid innings while allowing 2 runs on 1 hits with 6 strikeouts with an ERA of 5.16 for the game, yet, suffered the no decision.  Charlie Morton also got the no decision for the Astros in going 6 innings while allowing 1 run on 4 this, 1 homer and 5 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.89 in the defeat.  Ian Desmond was 2-4 with an RBI for the Rockies while Carlos Gonzales and Nolan Arenado each had an RBI for the night.  Houston only managed a single hit for the game with Jose Altuve was 1-2 with an RBI.  The win halted a 2-game skid for the Rockies while affording them some momentum going into their next series against the red-hot Oakland A’s at home to which they would pick up the 3-1 win on 7-27-2018.

St. Louis would be 7-3 road losers to the Cincinnati Reds on 7-26-2018, which turned out to be their 3rd lost series in a row.  The Reds would cash in on the money line as underdogs (+115) while the over would be the play with total runs being set at 9 for the game.  Jack Flaherty (4-5) would get the loss for the Cards as he would pitch 5 innings while allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, 2 homers, and 8 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.28 while Sal Romano (6-8) would pick up the win in going 6 innings while allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits, 1 homer, and 5 strikeouts with an ERA of 5.07 in the loss.  Yadier Molina was 3-5 with an RBI in the loss while Yairo Munoz along with Paul DeJong each had a hit apiece along with an RBI.  Scooter Gennett was 3-4 for the Reds in the win while Phillip Irvin accounted for 2 of their 10 hits along with 2 RBI’s.  St. Louis had lost 4 of their last 6 games, yet, would pick up a win in the opener of a 3-game home set versus the Cubs on 7-27-2018 by a 5-2 score.

Colorado Rockies's Latest Performance :

The Colorado Rockies are winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-3-1.  Recently, the Rockies would win a 3-game road set versus the Arizona Diamondbacks on 7-22-2018 while following this up with a tie in a short, 2-game home set versus the Houston Astros on 7-25-2018.  They would go back home to Coors Field to begin a 3-game home set versus the Oakland Athletics to which they would pick up the huge, momentum-boosting 3-1 win on 7-27-2018.

For the season, the Rockies are averaging 4.83 runs per game (7th) with a team batting average of .256 (7th), 132 homers (8th), along with 53 stolen bases (13th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 4.67 (24th) with 860 strikeouts (19th), along with 47 quality starts (9th).

Nolan Arenado (.308 BA on 367 AB), DJ LeMahieu (.278 BA on 302 AB), Charlie Blackmon (.290 BA on 389 AB), and Trevor Story (.288 BA on 386 AB) have been the leading offensive superstars for the Colorado Rockies thus far.

Kyle Freeland (9-6, 3.13 ERA, 126.2 IP, 44 R, 112 H, 13 HR, 44 BB, 100 SO) has been solid for the Rockies rotation this year while Tyler Anderson (6-3, 3.57 ERA, 121 IP, 52 R, 102 H, 17 HR, 41 BB, 112 SO) has also be a compliment to the staff as well.  Finally, German Marquez (8-8, 5.00 ERA, 108 IP, 65 R, 114 H, 17 HR, 40 BB, 112 SO) has been serviceable for Colorado in 2018.

St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :

The St. Louis Cardinals come into this matchup losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-3.  The Cardinals would lose a 5-game set to the Chicago Cubs on 7-22-2018 while going on to lose a 3-game road set versus the Reds on 7-25-2018.  Nonetheless, they would recover in game 1 of a 3-game home set, once again, versus their division foe Cubs, by winning 5-2 on 7-27-2018.

For the season, St. Louis averages 4.47 runs per game (17th) with a team batting average of .247 (14th), 130 homers (11th) along with 38 stolen bases (24th).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.92 (13th) with 844 strikeouts (21st) along with 45 quality starts on the season (13th).

Tommy Pham (.254 BA on 343 AB), Jose Martinez (.295 BA on 339 AB), and Yadier Molina (.294 BA on 262 AB) have been the most consistent batters at the plate for St. Louis this season.  Marcell Ozuna (.264 BA on 387 AB) has also been solid at the plate for the Cardinals this year.

Miles Mikolas (10-3) has pitched 124.1 innings and allowing 42 runs on 111 hits, 8 homers, 22 walks, and 89 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.82.

How Colorado Rockies & St. Louis Cardinals Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Rockies are 53-49 ATS while the O/U is 44-50-8.  On the other hand, the Cardinals are 47-56 ATS while the O/U is 47-51-5.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

None of the pitchers for this matchup have been named, however, there are some stats that one could ponder for this NL West versus NL Central clash.  The Rockies, again, have played well recently while their offense has struggled in recent outings.  On the other hand, their pitching staff has only suffered 3 runs in their last 2 outings, yet, in their last 6 games, they have allowed 32 runs.  The Cardinal offense has simply not been able to kick things into high gear lately in averaging only 2.5 runs in their last 6 games while their pitching staff has not been able to compensate for the team’s problems at the plate in that they have given up an average of 3.3 runs to their opponents during this time.  As stated, the Rockies hope to gain some ground in their respective division and may be getting this St. Louis team at a great time in which to take advantage of their inconsistencies to pick up some wins.  It will be interesting to see how the Cards perform at home in this matchup, as they have won only 2 of their last 8 games at Busch Field.

Against The Spread Selection: Games 1 & 2: Colorado Rockies

My reason for the pick :

The Rockies have played well recently in winning 13 of 17 contests while the Cards are losers of 5 of the last 8 games since the All-Star break.  With the Cards being atrocious at home lately, the Rockies could be in a great spot to pick up some wins along with gain some more ground within their division.  With that being said, with the pitching for Colorado not being as effective as it was earlier during their current winning streak, their offense has stepped it up in which to average a tad under 8 runs per game in their last 8 contests.  The Cards offense has only chipped in 3 runs per game in their last 6 games, but, their pitching staff has surrendered 28 runs during this time.  In all, look for Colorado to set the tone early in this series against a reeling St. Louis team that possesses an unreliable offense along with inconsistent pitching staff to boot.  Take the Rockies to win games 1 and 2, thus setting the stage for the finale.

Totals Selection: Game 3: Over

My reason for the prediction :

Despite their recent solid streak, the Rockies pitching has been known to give up runs from time to time as they have allowed 27 runs in their last 4 road games.  On the other hand, the over has been the play in 11 of the last 14 games for the Cards, overall.  I will back the over in this matchup in that the trends suggest that both teams are prone to allowing a number of opportunities to score runs.  I certainly believe game 3 on Sunday will be one of those games to where the scoreboard will light up as both teams will have ample opportunities in which to put runs on the board.
