The Mariners will welcome their division rival the Astros to Safeco Field as both team from the AL West will be going head to head for the top spot in the division in a three-game series starting on Monday. The Mariners are in 2nd place while the Astros are currently leading the division, this will be their 3rd meeting of the season. The Astros lead the season series 1-0. In the second meeting, the matchup ended in a 1-1 split in a two-game series.

Game 1&2: 10:10 PM ET

Game 3: 4:10 PM ET

Houston Astros's Latest Performance :

The Astros will begin their 8 game road trip against the Mariners in a three-game set. The World Series Champions have the best road record in the majors they are 35-16 on the road. Coming into this series the Astros are 2nd best in batting with 525 runs scored this season and 1st in pitching with a 3.06 ERA. The Astros are 12-5 against their AL West rivals they will use that to their advantage against the Mariners. This will be the opportunity to extend their lead on top of the AL West division they hold a 5 game lead over the Mariners. The Astros recently acquired catcher Maldonado from the Angels he is certain that his defense will be the difference maker he is the second best caught stealing percentage among all Major Leauge catchers at 40 percent.

Player to watch in this series: Evan Gattis, he hasn’t been great for the Astros in the month of July but perhaps things will change heading into August. In his last outing, he went  3-for-3 with a solo homer, a walk, and two runs scored. He has 20 homers and 64 RBI on the year. He has reached at least 20 homers in five out of his six seasons in the majors. Gattis will show up against the Mariners on the road.

Team leaders:

  • RBIs: Alex Bregman (68)
  • Homers: Alex Bregman (21)
  • Batting Average: Jose Altuve (.329)

Probable Pitchers for this series:

Game 1: Gerrit Cole,  he struck out nine batters, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over 6 1/3 innings, in a no-decision against the Rockies on Tuesday. He is 10-2 with a 2.54 ERA and a microscopic 0.98 WHIP in 21 starts. He owns a 186/46 K/BB ratio over 134 2/3 innings. He will return to the mound on Monday for the series opener against the Mariners.

Game 2: Charlie Morton, he gave up just one run in six innings but had to settle for a no-decision at Coors Field against the Rockies on Wednesday. He has an 11-2 record with a 2.89 ERA and 1.16 WHIP after 20 starts. He has 151 strikeouts and 49 walks in 118 1/3 innings.

Game 3: Dallas Keuchel, he suffered his first loss since June 5th as he allowed three runs over five innings. He will be looking to bounce back against the Mariners on the road in the final game of the series. He holds a 3.60 ERA through 22 starts.

Seattle Mariners's Latest Performance :

The Mariners will be back at Safeco Field for a 7 game homestand beginning on Monday. The homestand opens with a three-game series against the Astros. The Mariners will use this opportunity to cut into the 5 game Astros lead. The Mariners are rock solid when playing at home this season they are 34-19 at home. The Mariners haven’t made the playoffs since 2001 and it is unfortunate that Robinson Cano ineligible for the postseason roster (after being suspended for PEDs). Playing at home for 7 straight games will definitely boost the teams’ morale going forward. Coming into this series the Mariners are 15th in pitching with a 3.97 ERA and 22nd in batting with 432 runs scored this season.

Player to watch in this series: Nelson Cruz, he went 2-for-4 with a solo homer that ended his homer drought giving him 23 homers on the season, but the Mariners fell to the Angels in extra innings on Friday. He is slashing .265/.357/.528 over 309 at-bats. I expect him to heat up for the Mariners as they will make a final push into the postseason. He will have to play well against the Astros for the Mariners to win at home. His batting number should go up in the next few months.

Team leaders:

  • RBIs: Mitch Haniger (67)
  • Homers: Nelson Cruz (22)
  • Batting Average: Jean Segura (.321)

Probable Pitchers for this series:

Game 1: James Paxton, he will be making his return to the mound in the series opener on Monday against the Astros, he has an 8-4 record, 3.70 ERA 1.089 WHIP, and 155/33 K/BB ratio in 119 1/3 innings (20 starts) this season.

Game 2: Mike Leake, he gave up four hits and two runs over 6 1/3 innings Wednesday in a no-decision against the Giants. He will be seeking for his first win since June 23rd pitching against the Astros on Tuesday. He is 8-6 on the season with a 4.15 ERA and 1.30 WHIP.

Game 3: Wade LeBlanc, he allowed three runs over six innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Friday. He has 3.51 ERA and 82 strikeouts in just under 103 innings, he will make his return to the mound against the Astros on Wednesday.

How Houston Astros & Seattle Mariners Matchup.

Mariners are 38-17 in their last 55 games vs. a right-handed starter.

Astros are 62-25 in their last 87 games vs. a right-handed starter.

Against The Spread Selection: Houston Astros

My reason for the pick :

The Mariners won’t be able to cut into the lead of the Astros and will fall to the Astros 2-1 at home. The Astros will remind us all again why they are the best pitching team in the Majors. As the season progresses the Astros are starting to find their World Series form and they will be very hard to beat them if they get it going both offensively and defensively. They have the best road record in the Major and the Astros aren’t going to lose on the road and especially going up against their rivals the Mariners. The Mariners won’t be able to crack the Astros pitches despite playing at home. Cruz will have a great series he will soon find out that he can’t be the only player to play well to take down the Astros on the road.

The Astros to beat the Mariners on the road 2-1.

Betting trends for Houston Astros:

  • Astros are 46-22 in their last 68 overall.

Betting trends for Seattle Mariners:

  • Mariners are 18-6 in their last 24 when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game.
