San Diego Padres vs Chicago Cubs
Wrigley Field and the Chicago Cubs host the San Deigo Padres in a four-game series that begins Thursday night in the Windy City. Chicago has dominated the NL Central for the majority of the season, but have given way to the surging Milwaukee Brewers the past couple of weeks. The Padres are sitting alone in last place in the NL West twelve games back from fourth place in the division.
To kick off this NL matchup, Chicago will start lefty gunslinger Mike Montgomery (3-4, 4.03 ERA) on the mound against struggling Padres righty Luis Perdomo (1-6, 7.94 ERA).
San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :
The San Diego Padres haven’t had a good season and are struggling to win. Having gone 2-8 in their last ten and on a five-game losing streak, they desperately need a win to lift morale in the dugout if anything. Look for the Padres to deal pitcher Tyson Ross (and possibly a reliever) before the deadline in exchange for some building block players that can help them in the future. Rebuilding is never fun, but the Padres are in a good position to lure top prospects and draft picks to help this team eventually win.
Chicago Cubs's Latest Performance :
The Chicago Cubs are struggling to keep their top spot as they’ve managed a 5-5 record in their last ten and were nearly swept by the Cardinals this week. Pitcher Kyle Hendricks regained his composure and saved the day in the final game of the series giving them a 5-2 victory. The Cubs are hoping they can take that momentum into the bullpen along with the newly acquired Cole Hamels and improve their pitching efforts. The addition of Hamels sent the league’s walk leader Tyler Chatwood to the bullpen for a rest.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The Chicago Cubs are fighting to stay in the top spot in the Central division and have an opportunity to take the Padres to task and help keep them ahead of the Brewers. This is an important series for the Cubs. The Padres, on the other hand, have nothing to lose or gain in this series other than playing the role of spoiler. With a third of the season left, one team needs high draft picks and the other wants to win the division and have a chance for a world championship.
