Philadelphia Phillies vs San Diego Padres
It’s a National League match-up as the first-place Philadelphia Phillies invade Petco Park to take on the last-place San Diego Padres in a three-game series on Friday night. The last time these two teams played was back in late July where the Phillies took the series 2-1 after game two was postponed.
The San Diego Padres will start struggling right-hander Walker Lockett (0-2, 9.28 ERA) against Phillies show stopper Zach Eflin (8-3, 3.61 ERA) to kick off this battle of first vs. worst.
Philadelphia Phillies's Latest Performance :
The Philadelphia Phillies are still only a game ahead of the Atlanta Braves but they are also still number one in the NL East. They’ve gone 5-5 in their last ten and will need to step it up in order to stay in first place. The Phillies went into extra innings on Tuesday against Arizona in a 14-inning outing that didn’t end until 2 a.m. in the morning. And they lost. They’ll need all the sleep and energy they can muster if they can skate through the Padre series to take on the number one team in MLB.
San Diego Padres's Latest Performance :
The San Diego Padres have more or less spent the entire season in last place. The closest they’ve ever been to .500 is when they started the season 0-1. It’s been all downhill since. The Padres are clearly rebuilding and for good reason. As that transformation continues, they let pitchers Tyson Ross and Jordan Lyles walk for free on Sunday and were snatched up on waivers by the Cardinals and Brewers respectively. Why let them walk? Two reasons. The first, their future wins mean nothing this season. Second, they make a call to Triple-A and start developing a couple of top prospects.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The Phillies and Padres series should be a foregone conclusion. However, the Padres enjoy winning games against top teams. In their last series, the Padres did beat the Phillies 10-2 in game three (game two was postponed) and looked like a playoff team. That only seems to last a game or two at most before they go on a downhill slide amassing losses like they were worth something. The truth is, this isn’t a good match-up for the Padres and should really be a tune-up for the Phillies to head home and take on the Boston Red Sox.
