Houston Astros vs Seattle Mariners

The Houston Astros travel to Safeco Field to take on the Seattle Mariners in a three-game series on Monday night. The Astros come into this series in first place in the AL West with the third-best record in all of MLB. The Mariners are sitting in third place 4.5 games back and fighting to get into position to make the playoffs. These two teams met a little over a week ago in Houston and the Mariners not only won that series, they swept the Astros in four.

The Mariners will give Mike Leake (8-7, 3.90 ERA) the start on the mound in game one of this series against Astros ace, Gerrit Cole (11-5, 2.71 ERA).

Houston Astros's Latest Performance :

The Houston Astros can also lay claim to the over 70 wins club. They’ve have lead the AL West almost all season despite going 4-6 in their last ten. They lead the second-place A’s by 2.5 games and will have a tough series with the Mariners. They’ve been in a bit of a funk after losing nine straight games which is something they haven’t done since 1966. Ever since they walked out of Dodgers Stadium last year after winning the World Series, they have been the odds-on favorite to win it again. Not anymore. Oddsmakers gave up on them and have aimed their sights on the unstoppable Boston Red Sox who currently hold MLB’s best record.

Seattle Mariners's Latest Performance :

The Seattle Mariners are playing some tough baseball. They come into this series after going 6-4 in their last ten while looking to eclipse the Oakland A’s for second place and a shot at the wild-card. They’ve joined baseball’s elite few in the 70 wins and over club.  They’ve done it with solid hitting and masterful pitching. They were dealt a blow this week in the bullpen when pitcher James Paxton was put on the disabled list with a left forearm contusion. Right-hander Christian Bergman was called up from Triple-A Tacoma to take over pitching duties.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The Astros were dominated by the Mariners in their last match-up. Surprising to think they were swept in a four-game series this late in the season. The Astros had their way in an earlier series, so this is a bit of a grudge match. Prior to the sweep, the Astros owned the Mariners winning 12 of the last 15. The Mariners aren’t in desperation mode just yet but they have a good opportunity to start closing gaps in the division and make a move on both the Astro’s and A’s.
