Game 1 of a 3-game set versus eh Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals will take place at Busch Field in St. Louis, Missouri, on Tuesday night beginning at 8:15 pm EST.  The Pirates are currently in 4th place within the NL Central division while the Cards are surging in taking over the 2nd place slot from the Milwaukee Brewers recently.  In their last outing, the Cardinals would become tied in their current 3-game road set versus the Rockies as they would suffer the 9-1 loss on 8-25-2018 to where Colorado would cash in on the money line (-155) while the under was the play with total runs being set at 11 for the game.  The Cards would only rack up 5 runs for the game with Matt carpenter, Yadier Molina, and Jose Martinez each having a hit in the loss while Jon Gant would suffer the ND as he pitched a solid 7 outings while giving up 1 run on 3 hits, 1 homer, and 6 k’s with an ERA of 3.56 for the game.  German Marquez would also get the ND as he would also pitch a solid game in going 7 innings while giving up 3 hits while having 9 k’s for an ERA of 4.21.  The Rockies, on the other hand, would have 13 hits for the game Ian Desmond going 1-1 with 2 RBI’s while Carlos Gonzales (3-5) and DJ LeMahieu (2-4) would have a combined 2 RBI’s in the victory.  The loss halted a 4-game winning streak for the Cardinals.

Pittsburgh Pirates 's Latest Performance :

The Pirates have lost 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 3-2.  After tying a 4-game home set versus the Cubs on 8-19-2018, the Pirates would be swept in yet another 4-game home set thanks to the Atlanta Braves on 8-22-2018.

Corey Dickerson (.307 BA on 410 AB), Francisco Cervelli (.258 BA on 248 AB), Starling Marte (.272 BA on 427 AB), and Colin Moran (.267 BA on 337 AB) have been the most consistent hitters in the lineup for the Pirates this year.  Jordy Mercer (.262 BA on 355 AB) and Josh Bell (.262 BA on 400 AB) have also been solid for Pittsburgh this year at the plate.

Trevor Williams (10-9, 130 IP, 56 R, 116 H, 14 HR, 43 BB, 86 SO, 3.53 ERA) and Ivan Nova (7-8, 137 IP, 70 R, 147 H, 22 HR, 27 BB, 95 SO, 4.20 ERA) have shined on the mound for the Pirates, at times, this year.

St. Louis Cardinals 's Latest Performance :

The St. Louis Cardinals come into this matchup winners of 4 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4.  The Cardinals would win a 3-gaem home set versus the Brewers on 8-19-2018 while sweeping a 3-game road set versus the Los Angeles Dodgers on 8-22-2018.  After winning game 1 of a 3-game road set versus the Rockies by a 7-5 score, the Cards would drop game 2 by a 9-1 score on 8-25-2018.

Jose Martinez (.308 BA on 399 AB), and Yadier Molina (.282 BA on 348 AB) have been the most consistent batters at the plate for St. Louis this season.  Marcell Ozuna (.270 BA on 470 AB) has also been solid at the plate for the Cardinals this year.

How Pittsburgh Pirates & St. Louis Cardinals Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Cardinals are 63-67 ATS while the O/U is 58-65-7.  On the other hand, the Pirates are 64-66 ATS while the O/U is 61-62-7.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

No pitchers have been assigned for this matchup as this point, however, the Cardinals certainly have much momentum in their favor entering this series.  For one, they have won 10 of 12 games while winning 7 of the last 13 games versus the Pirates (5 of the last 7 contests altogether).  Furthermore, in their last outing versus the Pirates at Busch Stadium, they Cards would win a 4-game set on 6-3-2018.  The Pirates have not looked so well as they have dropped 9 of their last 12 games while plating only 30 runs during this time.  Also, the pitching has attempted to hold down the fort in the absence of offense by surrendering a total of 41 runs during this time.  With the Cardinals pitching allowing an average of 2.2 runs per game in their last 5 games, they will certainly look to feast on the inconsistent lineup for the Pirates.  ON the other hand, the Cards offense, averaging only 3.5 runs in their last 5 outings, will certainly look to tag the staff for the Pirates once against in an all-important NL Central showdown.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Games 1, 2, & 3: St. Louis Cardinals

My reason for the pick :

The Cardinals are continuing to extend their stellar streak of play which may not be the best type of scenario for the Pirates as they have hit yet another slide lately.  Their offense cannot seem to get things right while their pitching staff has been attempting to hold things together, as stated, but, for how long?   Lack of run support has hurt this team recently, and a road matchup with the Cardinals who have averaged a tad under 5 runs per game in their last 7 outings at Busch Field, expect the home team to continue their stellar play in sweeping fashion as I expect an offensive burst from a team that is red-hot at the moment.
