Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
St. Louis Cardinals vs Atlanta Braves
The Braves will welcome the Cardinals to SunTrust Park as the two teams will go head to head in a three-game set starting on Monday. Game one starts at 7:35 PM ET. The Cardinals will have to play at their very best if they want to keep their playoffs chances alive. The Braves are first in the NL East division while the Cardinals are tied with the Dodgers for the 2nd spot in the Wild Card. This will be their second meeting of the year, in the first meeting the Braves swept the Cardinals on the road in a three-game series.
St. Louis Cardinals's Latest Performance :
The Cardinals will begin their brief three road trip against the Braves. The Cardinals are looking to bounce back after the series loss to the Dodgers. The Cardinals find themselves on the outside of the playoffs picture. After going 22-6 in August they fell 5-8 in September. They’ve endured two three-game losing streaks in September alone. It will be a challenge for the Cardinals to play the Braves on the road since the Braves are playing their best baseball in the month of September. The Cardinals are 10th in pitching with a 3.76 ERA and 11th in batting with 689 runs scored this season.
Matt Carpenter will have to play well against the Braves if the Cardinals wants to make the postseason. He’s 10-for-48 with no homers and four RBI in 13 games this month. This comes after he hit eight homers in June, 11 in July and nine in August. The former MVP must rediscover his form hope that he can finish the season strong. On the season he is slashing .268/.383/.548 with 35 homers and 77 RBIs.
Probable Pitcher: Miles Mikolas, he held the Pirates to only a single run while striking out seven batters in his last start for the Cardinals. The seven strikeouts are tied for Mikolas’ highest total since May. He will look to keep up his impressive performance on the mound on Monday against the Braves. He is 15-4 on the year with a 2.99 ERA and 1.12 WHIP.
Atlanta Braves's Latest Performance :
The Braves are currently on a ten game homestand and winners of six straight games as they will take on the Cardinals in a three-game set. The Braves are coming off an impressive series opener win over the Nationals. They are now seven a half-game ahead of second place Phillies with 13 games left to play in the season. The Braves are 10th in batting with 690 runs scored this season and 6th in pitching with a 3.69 ERA. Playing well at this time of the season indicates that the this Braves team are ready for the postseason.
Ronald Acuna continued his impressive rookie campaign as he notched his first four-hit game in the Majors. He relies on muscle memory and has the same approach every time he steps up to the plate. He finished a homer shy of the cycle. Still, he collected a double, single, and a triple through the first four innings against Max Scherzer. He will be a problem for teams going up against him in the playoffs.
Probable Pitcher: Mike Foltynewicz, he allowed one run on six hits in a complete-game victory over the Giants on Tuesday. He struck out seven batters and walked only one. He is 4-2 with a 1.84 ERA and 53/13 K/BB ratio in eight starts over the last two month. He returns to the mound on Monday.
How St. Louis Cardinals & Atlanta Braves Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Braves are 4-8 in their last 12 home games vs. a right-handed starter.
Cardinals are 11-4 in their last 15 vs. a team with a winning record.
Against The Spread Selection: Atlanta Braves
My reason for the pick :
The Atlanta Braves continue to play well in September as they will take down the Cardinals in the series opener. Acuna will be the difference maker between the two teams as Mikolas will have no answer for him. It is unfortunate for the Cardinals that they are facing a hard schedule to end the season. Matt Carpenter can’t be the only batter to provide offense for the team he will need some help from Matt Adams but that is unlikely going to happen. The Braves team chemistry is at an all-time high and it tough for anyone to stop them when they are firing on all cylinders.
The Braves to beat the Cardinals at home in game 1.
