Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Oakland Athletics vs New York Yankees
The Yankees will welcome the Athletics to Yankee Stadium as they will host the AL wild-card game on Wednesday. The Yankees ended the year in second place of the AL East while the A’s ended the year in second of the AL West. This will be their third meeting of the season, the season series is tied at 1-1. The winner of this game will play the Red Sox.
Oakland Athletics's Latest Performance :
The A’s end the season as the season as the second-best team in the AL West five games behind the World Series champs the Astros. The A’s are 46-32 when playing on the road this season. The A’s expected to go with an 11-man pitching staff for the Wild Card Game. They are 11th in pitching with a 3.79 ERA and 3rd best in batting with 799 runs scored this season with 223 homers scored ranking them second just behind the Yankees.
Khris Davis has been one of the best players for the A’s this season notching 47 homers on the year to go along with 121 RBIs. He will be leading the A’s offense as they get ready to play the Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. The A’s will be relying on him to produce magical numbers as they prepare for an upset.
Jed Lowrie is having the best year as a player finishing off the season with 96 RBIs and 22 homers both career highs. Going up against the Yankees on the road will be the biggest challenge for Lowrie. He is slashing .267/.355/.447 on the season. After a great second half of the year, Lowrie will do all he can to prolong the A’s season beating the Yankees to set up a matchup against the Red Sox.
Probable pitcher for the Wild Card game: Mike Fiers is projected to start for the A’s against the Yankees on Wednesday. He has been the best and most consistent starter on the Athletics since being acquired from Detroit with a 2.90 ERA with the club.
New York Yankees's Latest Performance :
The Yankees clinched homecourt by defeating the Red Sox at Fenway Park 11-6. The Yankees are 53-28 when playing at home this season. Coming into this wild-card game the Yankees are second best in batting with 830 runs scored this season and 8th in pitching with a 3.74 ERA. The Yankees hit 264 home runs this season ranking them first in the league. With their potent batting lineup and the home crowd behind the team, this game could very much favor the Yankees to come out victorious.
Aaron Judge is rounding into form at the right time for New York. He was 2-for-4 with a solo homer, a walk, and three runs scored in Friday’s victory over the Red Sox. It was his first homer since returning from his wrist fracture. On the season he is slashing .278/.392/.525 with 26 homers and 66 RBIs. I expect him to show up at home against the A’s in the Wild Card game.
Aaron Hicks should be another player that we have to keep an eye on he has quietly been one of the better all-around players in the American League this season, including a .249/.368/.470 batting line with 27 homers, 79 RBI, 11 steals, and 90 runs scored over 135 games despite dealing with a hamstring injury, however, he should be good to go against the A’s on Wednesday.
Probable pitcher for the Wild Card game: J.A. Happ is projected to start in the wild-card game for the Yankees. He has been great for the ballclub ever since bringing him over from the Blue Jays going 6-0 with a 2.34 ERA in 10 starts. He allowed four hits in all while walking two and striking out seven in his final start of the regular season ending the year with a record of 17-6 with a 3.65 ERA.
How Oakland Athletics & New York Yankees Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Yankees are 43-20 in their last 63 in game 1.
Athletics are 6-2 in their last 8 in game 1.
Against The Spread Selection: New York Yankees
My reason for the pick :
With both teams having the best batting rotation it will all come down to the pitching department who will be able to hold their ground. Fiers will look to bounce back after a bad start against the Angels in his last start. The Yankees will be confident after a dominant series win over the Red Sox as they will be looking to put up a show for the home fans and they do not want to fall short to the A’s at home. I have stated from the very beginning whoever has the home-field advantage will normally come up on top. The A’s did make a late push despite having an easier schedule but the Yankees kept on rolling as they won seven of their last ten games. Aaron Judge will play well at home against the A’s as the Yankees will come out victorious at home as they prepare themselves to set another rivalry showdown against the Red Sox.
The Yankees to beat the A’s at home in the AL Wild Card game.
