Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

New Orleans Pelicans vs Golden State Warriors

The 2nd seed Golden State Warriors will host the 6 seed New Orleans Pelicans in game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals. The Warriors beat the Spurs in the first round 4-1 while the Pelicans beat the Trail Blazers 4-0.

New Orleans Pelicans's Latest Performance :

New Era In New Orleans

The New Orleans Pelicans have been waiting for their breakthrough moment as a franchise, especially with one of the best players in the NBA in Anthony Davis, and they finally have received that moment as the Pelicans advanced to the 2nd round for the first time since the franchise was named the Hornets. The Pelicans proved every hater wrong that said they wouldn’t compete without DeMarcus Cousins as they swept the 3 seed Portland Trail Blazers who was supposed to be a team to watch this postseason. The Pelicans received their typical production from Anthony Davis as he went on a tear in the first 4 games as he averaged 33 PPG and 11.8 RPG, but the Pelicans can accredit their success to the production from the other guys. Jrue Holiday had a career stretch of games against the Trail Blazers as he wasn’t only locking down Damian Lillard but averaged 27 PPG which is way above his season average of 19 PPG. The Pelicans also received a crazy amount of production from the filling piece for DeMarcus Cousins in Nikola Mirotic. Mirotic brings a different type of game to the Pelicans as he is a stretch big and he showed it as he averaged 18.3 PPG as well as led the Pelicans in three-pointers made as he averaged 3 per game. The Pelicans look like a threat to any team in the NBA when they receive production from guys who aren’t their ordinary producers.

Golden State Warriors's Latest Performance :

Warriors Playing Like Warriors

The Golden State Warriors have become accustomed to making the 2nd round of the playoffs as they have made it past the first round in 5 out of the last 6 seasons, 2 of which turned out to be NBA championships. The Warriors saw themselves struggle towards the end of the season as they saw their MVP in Steph Curry go down with an injury as they closed out the season losing 6 out of the final 10 games. People started speculating if the Warriors would be on upset watch against the Spurs but as we learned the Warriors were not phased as they showed NBA fans that they don’t feed into the talk. MVP Kevin Durant claimed a bigger role in the first round as he averaged 28.2 PPG which was slightly over his regular season average. The Warriors also received a little more production out of their other splash brother in Klay Thompson as he averaged above his regular season average with 22..6 PPG. The Warriors can credit their wins to more so of their defense as we saw a much improved Steve Kerr defense. The Warriors held the Spurs to 96.8 PPG over the 5 games which is much improved from their regular season defense who allowed 107.5 PPG. The Warriors should be expecting Steph Curry back for the 2nd round of the playoffs, but with the Warriors already hitting on all cylinders you want to make sure Curry is back to 100% before inserting him back in the lineup as the chemistry looked good in the first round.

Against The Spread Selection: New Orleans +9

My reason for the pick :

The Pelicans shocked the world with the way they played in the first round as they dominated the Trail Blazers in all 4 games. They shocked me as well as I picked the Trail Blazers to win in 5, but the Pelicans have me thinking they are contenders. Anthony Davis is trying to extend his young legacy to another level as he wants to be known as a winner like LeBron and MJ. The Pelicans are good enough to win this game as they have more than enough potential to give a non-Curry team some fits, but the least the Pelicans can do is play within the spread and I think they do just that in this matchup as the Pelicans cover the spread.

Totals Selection: Over 223.5

My reason for the prediction :

The Pelicans and the Warriors were two of the best scoring teams during the 2018 regular season and the playoffs haven’t stopped these two teams. The Pelicans have little interest in playing defense and the Warriors played an incompetent offense in the Spurs who can’t score very many points. Both teams will score an abundance of buckets as the last matchup between these 2 teams ended in a total of 246.

  • The under is 22-19-1 as the home favorite this season.
