Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Dallas Mavericks vs Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns will welcome the Dallas Mavericks to Talking Stick Resort Arena for their season opener, the Suns ended the season with the worst record in the west while the Mavericks finished 13th. Both teams will feature two of the top rookies in this year draft class DeAndre Ayton and Luka Dončić. Game tips off at 10:30 PM ET.
Dallas Mavericks's Latest Performance :
The Dallas Mavericks are the early winner of the trade with the Hawks where they landed Dončić. Dončić is the youngest player to win MVP in the Euroleague and he has shown us in the preseason that he is the real deal his passing skills are as advertised. Pairing him up with Dennis Smith JR. might be the backcourt of the future for Dallas. In the offseason, the Mavericks were able to land their long-awaited center DeAndre Jordan. Jordan provides some help for a team that was bottom ten in rebounding the last two seasons. He also gives them some rim protection, which they also struggled from. J.J. Barea will back up the two backcourts and act as a mentor for the two young guards. Playing against the Suns on the road would allow the Dallas backcourt to showcase their talents against the Suns’ current weakness because they were unable to land a starting point guard which is something that they desperately need.
Player to watch: Dennis Smith Jr., he is coming in as a second-year player so I expect for him to exploit the Suns point guard problems and create opportunities for others on the team to score. He has shown instant chemistry with Luka Doncic. Besides the fact that this duo will be a treat to watch and will be in full display in the season opener on the road.
Phoenix Suns 's Latest Performance :
The Suns got what they wanted after years of trying the number one draft pick in franchise history they ended up using the pick on the hometown kid DeAndre Ayton. There have been a lot of changes in the Suns’ franchise in the offseason they hired a new coach Igor Kokoskov as first European-born NBA coach. He led the Slovenian national team to their first European Champion. The hiring of Igor could be the tipping point of the Suns’ franchise because he will be utilizing a lot of ball movements instead of isolation basketball. They also added Ariza and Anderson from the Houston Rockets to help the team with floor spacing. All eyes will be on Devin Booker this season after signing a 5 year 158 million dollar contract extension with the Suns. The Suns do not have a traditional starting point guard on their roster, with only days left before the start of the 2018-19 regular season so the idea of starting Booker at the one could be a possibility. T.J. Warren still has a strong role on the squad and it would be great to see him coming off to the bench and provide instant offense.
Player to watch: Deandre Ayton, it will be his first real challenge as he will go up against Jordan in his first game as an NBA player. I expect him to hold his own and have a solid NBA debut. In the preseason he averaged 20.5 points, 11.3 boards, 2.0 assists, 1.0 steals, and 2.5 blocks. Oh, and he also shot 60.4% from the field.
How Dallas Mavericks & Phoenix Suns Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Suns are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.
Mavericks are 21-8 ATS in their last 29 games following a ATS loss.
Against The Spread Selection: Dallas Maverick
My reason for the pick :
The Maverick will look to exploit the Suns inexperience point guard from the very start. DSJ would beat his defender that means it will force Ayton to come and help on the weak side leaving Jordan wide open for the lob. It is hard for the Suns to compete without a proper backcourt as good as Booker is as a scorer he will need help at the perimeter someone who can drive and have a decent three ball. The string of point guards that the Suns have right now are good but they aren’t starting caliber point guards they will be taken advantage of. Once the Suns offense is stagnant Ariza and Anderson won’t get the looks they normally get from the arc. Doncic will have a great NBA debut sending a message to the Suns reminding them that he should have went number 1 in the draft.
The Maverick to beat the Suns on the road in the season opener.
