Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Minnesota Timberwolves vs San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs will welcome the Timberwolves to AT&T for their season opener, the Spurs fell short to the Warriors in the first round while the Timberwolves made their return to the postseason for the first time since the 2003-04 season but fell to the Rockets in the first round. Game tips off at 8:30 PM ET.

Minnesota Timberwolves's Latest Performance :

The Wolves are a mess at the moment, they were blown out in their last game of the preseason. This shows you how important the mental aspect of the game is as important as the physical side. Once the Jimmy Bulter and Towns situation is resolved then the Wolves can focus on basketball. Team chemistry is something that doesn’t get much coverage because relationships on the court are as important on the court as it is off the court. It’s obviously difficult to predict what direction this saga will head in next, but as of now, it seems as though Butler will begin the season with the Wolves and should be ready to play on opening night against the Spurs. When the ball is tipped the Wolves will have to put their personal problems aside and focus on the game and the way the Wolves can beat the Spurs is with togetherness, not isolation basketball.

Player to watch: Derrick Rose, he showed glimpses of his old self in the preseason and with Bulter potentially getting traded in the future this means the Wolves will have to rely on Rose for the offense.

San Antonio Spurs's Latest Performance :

The Spurs are still the Spurs despite trading away Kawhi to Toronto and bringing in DeMar DeRozan. It will be interesting how Pops uses him in his offense. DeRozan is a much improved 3 point shooter compared to when he first came into the league and was labeled as a player who can only hit the midrange jumper. Nowadays it is necessary for everyone to have a three-ball and have the ability to spread the floor. The San Antonio system that is reliant on spreading the ball around so Demar will have to ready when the ball comes to him on the swing passes. It is unfortunate that Murray had to go down with a torn ACL in his right knee. This means more minutes for Patty Mills at the point guard position since Tony Parker is off to Charlotte. Playing against a Wolves team that is disjointed at the moment could prove to be beneficial to the Spurs at the moment.

Player to watch: Pau Gasol, the Spurs will have to rely on his top of the key passes, he could get Rudy Gay and DeRozan easier baskets when they slash to the rim for easy layups. Gasol can definitely work the passing angles. Look for him to be very much involved in the Spurs offense because of the Murray injury.

Against The Spread Selection: San Antonio Spurs

My reason for the pick :

Discipline will be the theme for this game as the Spurs will beat out the Wolves at home. The Spurs rely on their patent ball movement, DeRozan is set to have a great debut with the team and will definitely get his looks from the floor. The Wolves will have a tough time to get their offense going because of what they have going on behind the scenes, the Wolves will need to start with a clean slate because they won’t be able to play together as a team with what they have going on inside their heads.

The Spurs will beat out the Wolves at home in their season opener.

Betting trends for Minnesota Timberwolves:

  • Timberwolves are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game.

Betting trends for San Antonio Spurs:

  • Spurs are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 home games.
