Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Charlotte Hornets vs Miami Heat

The Charlotte Hornets will travel to American Airlines Arena is Miami, Florida, to take on the Miami Heat on Saturday night beginning at 8 pm EST as the Heat dominated the Hornets last season in winning all four matchups by a total of 16 points.  They did not get their 2018 campaign off to a great start on Wednesday night as they were 104-101 road losers to the Orlando Magic as the home team went on a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.  The Charlotte Hornets also suffered a 113-112 home loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night despite a second half rally which saw them outscore the road team 58-46 led by Kemba Walker with 41 points and four assists.  Nonetheless, Giannis Antetokounmpo was outstanding in the game in scoring 25 points along with having 18 rebounds and eight assists in the win for the Bucks.

Charlotte Hornets's Latest Performance :

Charlotte’s Kemba Walker sparked the Hornets to a near comeback win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night as Charlotte almost erased a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter yet coming short in the end as the Bucks’ Antetokounmpo sealed the game by hitting two huge free throws in the waning seconds to pull out a hard-fought victory.  Of course, the great thing for the Hornets is that they were pushing the ball throughout the game and getting decent looks.  In fact, Walker had a chance to win the game for the Hornets with 4 seconds remaining yet missed a layup which led to Antetokounmpo going to the line and sealing the win.  Nonetheless, Walker, as stated, ended with 41 points for the game while three other players in Jeremy Lamb (10 points), Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (10), along with Malik Monk (18) also had great nights.  However, they allowed the Bucks to shoot 49% from the field on a night to where they went up by as many as 20 points.  Needless to say, to improve upon their 108 points per game average allowed on defense from 2017, the Hornets must be able to defend as well as ensure that they continue to push the ball with their young and talented roster that has proven that they play very well alongside each other.

Miami Heat's Latest Performance :

Goran Dragic and Josh Richardson scored 26 and 21 points respectively, as the Heat shot a dismal 39% from the field along with 27% from three-point range in their loss to the Magic on Wednesday night.  The Heat began the game well by hitting eleven of their first 20 shots of the game, however, would cool down due to stellar defense by the Magic as this would be the case throughout the game, particularly in the fourth quarter as Mohamed Bamba came up with two huge blocks to spark their late run that led to the victory for Orlando.  In addition to this, the Heat allowed six players for the Magic to reach double figures in scoring for the night while Hassan Whiteside scored 12 points and 18 rebounds for the Heat as he, Dragic, and Richardson were the only double-digit scorers for Miami.  They will certainly have to play better on both ends of the court to improve upon their 44-38 record last year and which to make it deeper in the playoffs after their first-round exit in 2017.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This will be an interesting matchup as the Heat, as stated, has had the upper hand versus Charlotte in the past, yet it is an entirely new season and the Hornets seek to curb the trends versus Miami in getting a win on the road at American Airlines Arena to where they lost both of their two games last year by a total of nine points.  Walker has turned into a star for Charlotte and will definitely be looking to continue providing a spark for a Charlotte team that has many scoring options yet comes up short on the defensive end more often than not.  With that being said, this contest will be a back and forth game throughout as the Heat can indeed play defense but struggles on the offensive end while the Hornets are exactly the opposite.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Charlotte Hornets

My reason for the pick :

I will back the Hornets in this matchup as I believe that they have the talent to really turn things around from their 36-46 season last year.  And despite their last outing, they will perform much better versus a Heat team that is very inconsistent on the offensive end.  Of course, the Hornets must bring their A game as the Heat will look to lock down their offensive options while Whiteside will patrol the paint and provide a defensive presence throughout; However, I feel as though the Hornets will work their strengths which is pushing the ball and looking for spot up jumpers, thus essentially taking Whiteside out of the equation.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

The under has been the play in three of four games versus these teams, as stated, and I expect this trend to continue.  Of course, such a pick favors Miami in that they would love to slow down the pace of this game; However, the Hornets, as stated, will play to their strengths and despite the game being a bit slow at times, will continue to push the tempo in an effort to reel of some points in a hurry.  Nonetheless, the Heat will ensure that the visitors will not run as much in this contest, thus allowing the under to be the play in the end.

Betting trends for Charlotte Hornets:

    • Hornets are 4-2 ATS in last six road games
    • Hornets are 0-3-1 ATS in last four game versus Heat
    • The under is 5-3 in Hornets last eight road games

Betting trends for Miami Heat:

    • Heat are 1-6 ATS in last seven home games
    • Heat are 3-9 ATS in last 12 games overall
    • The under is 5-3-1 in Heat last nine home games
