Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Houston Rockets vs Los Angeles Lakers

The Houston Rockets will be looking to get into the win column in 2018 as they travel to Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, to battle the new look Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday night at 10:30 pm EST.  The Lakers will be playing their first game at home as Lebron James will take the court for the first time as a Laker.  On the other hand, the Rockets lost their first game of the season at home on Wednesday night versus the resilient New Orleans Pelicans as Anthony Davis had a monster game in putting up 32 points, 16 rebounds, and 8 assists.  Chris Paul and PJ Tucker both had 19 points for the Rockets in the loss while James Harden had 18 in the game after going six of 15 for the night.  Nonetheless, the Rockets will get their first look at James and the new look Lakers while also looking to play much better as a team as they were awful on both ends versus the Pelicans.

Houston Rockets's Latest Performance :

The Houston Rockets first home game of the season did not pan out as they expected on Wednesday night as the Pelicans had three blocks and three steals from Anthony Davis as he also scored 32 points for the night.  Nikola Miritic also chipped in 30 for the Pelicans that shot 53% for the night along with being on fire from three-point range in shooting ten of 25 in addition to leading by as much as 29 points at one point in the game.  The Rockets, on the other hand, shot 42% for the game while going 16 for 48 from three-point land as their starters were outscored by New Orleans’ starters by a 103-56 margin. Carmelo Anthony went three for ten for the night with nine points while Eric Gordon (21 points) and Michael Carter-Williams (10) provided a lift off the bench as well in the loss.  Needless to say, the Rockets were awful on the defensive end and will certainly have to improve in which to maintain their standard of excellence that they achieved last year.  Teams will certainly attempt to push the ball as well as drive to the hoop all year long until the Rockets hunker down and play consistent defense.

Los Angeles Lakers 's Latest Performance :

The Lakers will usher in the 2018 season with a new look starting five with Lebron James (27 ppg, 7 reb, 7 ass) leading the pack as he departed Cleveland in the offseason for what he felt was greener pastures out west.  Rajon Rondo (11 ppg, 5 reb, 9 ass) will join him as he will also be looking to resurrect his career while getting his teammates involved in the offense, including forward Brandon Ingram (12 ppg, 5 reb, 3 ass), who serves as one of the two holdovers from last year’s team for the starting group.  Along with these three, the Lakers will start forward Kyle Kuzma (16 ppg, 6 reb) as well along with center Ivika Zubac (6 ppg, 4 reb) who, up to this point, played a reserve role for the Lakers.  In all, expect for the Lakers to make some noise in a crowded and talented western conference in 2018 while especially being a threat to the top tier teams in Golden State and Houston.

How Houston Rockets & Los Angeles Lakers Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Houston is 0-1 ATS while the OU is 1-0

Los Angeles is 0-0 ATS while the OU is 0-0

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

At some point, Houston must prove that they can play some defense as a team.  In their contest on Wednesday night, the Pelicans pushed the ball just as much as the Rockets and were able to get uncontested baskets time and time again.  As a result, the road team was also able to get wide open looks in transition which eventually hurt them in the end.  Look for the Lakers to do the same in this contest as Rondo will certainly seek to find his teammates throughout the contest while James will look to get going in the isolation game early and often.  Houston will play its game, however, and will certainly score some points when its all said and done, yet it will be interesting to see if they will play better defense early on to set the tone of the game.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Houston Rockets

My reason for the pick :

Look for the Rockets to come out blazing in this matchup after their loss on Wednesday as they will get a slim victory in Chris Paul’s return to Staples Center.  And while it is uncertain if the road team will play better defense in this matchup, believe that the score will balloon as both teams will be able to take advantage of their opportunities throughout its duration.  Houston won three of four games versus the Lakers last year, however, expect this to be a much closer affair to where the Rockets will put out an exciting victory in the end.

Totals Selection: Pick: Over

My reason for the prediction :

Of course, the over will be the strong play in this matchup with the Rockets currently being awful on the defensive end.  Also, the Rockets put up big numbers versus the Lakers last year and I expect more of the same in this matchup.  Combine this with the fact that both offenses will most certainly push the ball all night, as stated, look for both squads to take advantage of their scoring opportunities.  Lebron James will be looking to establish himself as well in this contest and will challenge the Rockets at the rim to get easy scores or get to the free throw line.  With that being said, look for Harden to be more accurate in this game as the total will certainly surpass its set mark due to both teams ability to score at will.
