Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Oklahoma City Thunder vs Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks will be looking forward to returning back to the American Airlines Center after losing on the road as they will play in a Western Conference matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Mavericks have been in a rebuilding stage over the last few years which has shown in their play while the Oklahoma City Thunder are playing as good as anyone in the NBA as they have won 6 straight games after dropping their first 4 games of the season.
Oklahoma City Thunder's Latest Performance :
The Oklahoma City Thunder have the necessary components to compete in a tough Western Conference but as we saw last year they fell way short of expectations with an opening-round loss against the Utah Jazz, but the Thunder have shaken up their roster a little bit and locked up star SF Paul George for the long haul. The Thunder dropped the first 4 games of the season but Russell Westbrook missed 2 of those 4 matchups and with the star PG back and healthy we have seen the Thunder rattle off 6 straight wins. Westbrook is leading the team in scoring as the UCLA product is dropping 24.1 PPG but his production doesn’t only stop there as he is averaging just shy of a triple-double with his RPG number sitting at 8.3 and his APG number sitting at 8.9. Joining Russell Westbrook is Paul George and Steve Adams which makes up their “big 3” but the big difference this year is the addition of former Atlanta Hawk PG Dennis Schroder. Schroder has been solid for the Thunder off the bench this season as he is sitting 3rd on the team in scoring with 16.7 PPG which is a big upgrade from last years 2nd PG, Raymond Felton. Schroder got the starting nod in the Thunder’s recent win over the Cavaliers and the Germany native didn’t disappoint as he dropped 28 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Center Steven Adams also had a solid game as the big man fell just shy of a double-double as he dropped 9 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Dallas Mavericks's Latest Performance :
The Dallas Mavericks took a risk when they went out and got the European rookie Luka Doncic as traditionally players from overseas haven’t panned out too well in the NBA but their move to do this is looking like a genius idea as Doncic is the clear early favorite to win rookie of the year. The 19-year-old out of Slovenia isn’t only leading the Mavericks in scoring but he is leading all rookies as he is averaging 20.2 PPG other than scoring the basketball at an efficient rate he is also averaging 6.5 RPG and 4.2 APG. The Mavericks went out and made the move to sign the former Los Angeles Clippers center DeAndre Jordan who is averaging a double-double this year with 12.1 PPG and 13.9 RPG, Jordan also leads the Mavericks in BPG as he sits at 1.5. With Luka Doncic taking over the reins as the primary ball handler we have seen the 2017 1st round pick Dennis Smith Jr. take a step backwards, especially in the APG category as his 2017 total was 5.2 and his 2018 total sits at 3.8. The Mavericks dropped their recent matchup against the Utah Jazz as they were outscored 117-102, but as we have seen all season Doncic had another solid outing. The rookie dropped 24 points and grabbed 6 rebounds against a solid defensive team in the Utah Jazz. Another rookie who impressed in this matchup is Villanova product Jalen Brunson who dropped 11 points off the bench.

Against The Spread Selection: Oklahoma City Thunder*
My reason for the pick :
The Oklahoma City Thunder on paper looks like a top 4 team in the Western Conference as they have 2 MVP candidates on their team, and we are finally seeing them live up to expectations. The Thunder should go into Dallas and have no problem beating a below average Maverick team and the trends support that as well. OKC has been one of the best teams in the NBA ATS on the road as they have gone 4-1, and even if Russell Westbrook isn’t ready to go for this matchup I still believe Dennis Schroder will step in and continue doing an effective job. Steven Adams and DeAndre Jordan will be a solid matchup to watch for but Paul George is destined for a big game and this may be the game to do it with Russ questionable for this game.
