Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

San Antonio Spurs vs New Orleans Pelicans

The San Antonio Spurs will travel to Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, to battle the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The Spurs are coming off a damaging 3-game road trip to where they were winless with their last loss being a 116-111 road loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday night as they now allowed their opponents to average 112 points per game during their prior road trip. On the other hand, the offense only put up an average of 101 points during this time.

The offense for San Antonio sputtered in their last game as well as they shot only 39% from the night while shooting 31% from the 3-point arc. Nonetheless, DeMar DeRozan scored 34 points for the Spurs in the loss while LaMarcus Aldridge had 10 points for the night on 3 for 15 shooting.

On the other hand, the Pelicans continued their winning ways as they won their second straight game in beating up on the Denver Nuggets at home by a 125-115 score on Saturday night as Anthony Davis hit 20 of 21 free throws while scoring 40 points for the night. Also, Nikola Mirotic scored 20 points for the Pelicans in the win as well.

San Antonio Spurs's Latest Performance :

And stated, San Antonio has lost its last three games do to a horrendous road trip to where they allowed 112 points per game to their opponent while their offense failed to reach the 100 point mark in two of those outings.  In other words, the offense for the Spurs is struggling at this point, primarily due to a seemingly disinterested LaMarcus Aldridge who only went 3 for 15 for the night against the Clippers. Nonetheless, the Spurs will certainly have to clean things up as they have a New Orleans Pelicans group that they will be facing who is on an outstanding winning streak coming into the matchup.

One of the primary problems for the Spurs is that they are allowing teams to shoot an average of 47% from the field along with 37% from 3 point range for the year. This has certainly hurt their defensive effort all-around, recently, and will likely continue to do so if they are not able to guard the shooters for New Orleans, a team that is averaging 48% in field goal goal percentage for the year, good for fifth in the league.

New Orleans Pelicans's Latest Performance :

The New Orleans Pelicans have won five of their last six games overall and would love nothing better than to get a hard-fought win over the San Antonio Spurs in this matchup on Monday night. The Pelicans had five players in double figures in their last victory over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday night as Julius Randle scored 21 points off the Bench while Davis and Mirotic continued their effectiveness both inside and outside of the paint for New Orleans.

In all, the win for the Pelicans versus the Nuggets was a total team effort as Davis did not shoot well from the field yet was conscious in finding other teammates in which to take up the slack during his cold shooting night. ”I just realized that a lot of teams are scouting for me,” Davis said. ”They didn’t want me to go off I guess, so I’m just trying to find guys and guys are playing with a lot of confidence and making shots. They know and I know where they are going to be and they know where I like them to be.”

With that being said look for the Pelicans to continue their outstanding play versus a San Antonio team that is looking for much more success then what they have been experiencing thus far in the season. They should be well aware, however, that the Pelicans are averaging 120 points per game at Smoothie King arena in 2018, thus making them very difficult to stop at home.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This will certainly be an interesting game in that you have the San Antonio Spurs, who are looking to halt a three-game losing streak, coming in to Smoothie King arena in which to get a win over a New Orleans Pelicans team that has been very effective at home. On the other hand, the Pelicans are simply looking to maintain their offensive play while continuing to ensure that other players, other than Davis and Mirotic, are constantly involved in the offense. Look for both squads to come out looking to push the pace in this game while the Spurs seek to somehow get LaMarcus Aldridge more involved in the offense in which to gain confidence for him moving forward.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:   New Orleans Pelicans

My reason for the pick :

With the way they have been playing lately, I will have to back the Pelicans in this instance in that they have a perfect mix of offensive of weapons at their disposal. With that being said, they have been able to pick up win after win despite having a subpar defense. Look for the Pelicans to continue their offensive streak versus a San Antonio squad that has had trouble covering teams from the perimeter this year. In all, the Pelicans will simply outshoot the San Antonio Spurs  during the course of this game while also picking up yet another victory in the meantime.

Totals Selection: Pick: Over

My reason for the prediction :

I will certainly pick the over in this contest as the Spurs will certainly be looking to become more efficient on the offensive in versus a New Orleans Pelicans squad that is giving up 116 points to their opponents per game this season on 46% shooting from the floor. On the other hand, the Pelicans are offensive-minded by nature and will certainly look to light things up from the outside while allowing Anthony Davis to dominate within the paint (as he usually does). In all, look for this game to be one to where the scoreboard with light up early and often as both teams will have solid nights.
