Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Philadelphia 76ers vs Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers are set to return back to the Staples Center for their 3rd consecutive home game where they will play host to the Philadelphia 76ers in a cross-conference clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 10:00 PM. Los Angeles has struggled without superstar LeBron James as they are .500 in their last 10 games while Philadelphia is one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference as they come into this game 4th in the standings.
Philadelphia 76ers's Latest Performance :
The Philadelphia 76ers are still one of the youngest teams in the NBA but they have progressed into an Eastern Confernece favorite as they currently sit in 4th place in the standings as well as only 4 games out of 1st place. Philadelphia is looking to avoid a losing streak after dropping their recent road game against the Denver Nuggets 126-110. The 76ers played without Jimmy Butler once again as the 7th year pro has been nursing a wrist injury, Butler is averaging 19 PPG and 4.8 RPG ever since coming over to Philadelphia from Minnesota. Philadelphia also granted the day off to all-star center Joel Embiid for rest which was a big hit to the 76ers as he is averaging 27.2 PPG and 13.3 RPG. The 76ers turned to veteran sharpshooter J.J. Redick to deliver the points and he had a solid outing against the Nuggets as he contributed 22 points which is slightly above his season average of 18.5 PPG. 2nd-year pro Ben Simmons has developed into one of the top guards in the NBA as he averages 16.6 PPG, 9.5 RPG, 8.2 APG, and we saw him have a solid game against the Nuggets as he contributed 19 points and 12 rebounds. The bench unit has been one of the top in the NBA as they deliver consistent production and they had a solid outing in Denver as they totaled 41 points. Backup forward Mike Muscala has been a top guy for the Sixers all season and he was able to stretch the floor with 10 points and 6 rebounds in their latest outing.
Los Angeles Lakers's Latest Performance :
The Los Angeles Lakers have been playing without arguably the best player in the world which has led to some unfavorable results over the past few weeks as they have been pushed down to 9th place in the Western Conference. The Lakers were able to break out of their 3 game losing streak with a win over the Phoenix Suns in their recent game 116-102. While the Lakers played without LeBron once again (27.3 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 7.1 APG) they were also without their 2nd leading scorer in Kyle Kuzma as the 2nd-year pro sat out with a hip injury, Kuzma is averaging 19.1 PPG and 5.9 RPG this season. 2nd-year center Ivica Zubac has developed into a starter this season as he is averaging 8.6 PPG and 5 RPG, but we saw how dominating he can be as he recorded a double-double with 24 points and 16 rebounds against the Suns. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is one of the few Lakers who is a shooting threat and we saw that against the Suns as he had one of his best games of the season as he delivered 24 points and 6 rebounds, KCP is averaging 10.3 PPG. Lance Stephenson was able to have a big game off the bench for the Lakers as he went 3 for 5 from behind the arc with 17 points and 4 assists. With 2nd-year pro Lonzo Ball out the Lakers need veteran Rajon Rondo to step up and be a playmaker and we saw what he can do against the Suns as he fell just short of a double-double in his 2nd game back from injury as he had 8 points and 11 assists.

Against The Spread Selection: Philadelphia 76ers
My reason for the pick :
With LeBron James and Kyle Kuzma still questionable for this game it is hard to cap it but regardless I still like the 76ers on the road as they will be getting back Joel Embiid and possibly Jimmy Butler. The Lakers have struggled to score the basketball without LeBron in the lineup and when you are playing the 76ers you are destined for a shootout as they rank 4th in the NBA in PPG. Joel Embiid is a mismatch for the emerging Zubac and with Lonzo out they don’t really have anyone who can stop Simmons as a PG. The 76ers have more shooters with Redick and Shamet which will be problematic for a Lakers team who lacks outside shooting. Take the Sixers to get back on track with a win here.
