Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Phoenix Suns vs L.A. Lakers
The Phoenix Suns will travel to Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, to battle the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night at 9:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Both these teams have been on the losing end lately as the Lakers have dropped three straight games, with their last being versus the Minnesota Timberwolves at home as despite 20 points from Brandon Ingram along with 15 from Rajon Rondo, who returned from injury. The Lakers were not able to contain Karl Anthony Towns throughout the game as he ended the contest with 27 points along with 12 rebounds. Furthermore, the Lakers turned the ball over 20 times on the night which led to 34 points for the T-wolves en route to the victory. LeBron James continues to be on the sideline for Los Angeles as no timetable has been set for his return to the court while Kyle Kuzma is also dealing with a hip injury at this point, yet, is probable for the Lakers in this contest.
The Phoenix Suns have been just as awful lately as they are losers of 9 of 10 games, overall, as they were not able to get anything going on the offensive end in shooting just 43% from the floor on the night while connecting on seven 3-pointers in their last time out versus the Nuggets. On the other hand, Denver was on the fire from the perimeter in shooting 50% while connecting on 15 three’s on the night as the Nuggets possessed 8 double-digit scorers led by Paul Millsap with 20 points along with nine rebounds in the win. The Suns are only 1-6 against the spread in the last seven meetings versus the Lakers while the over has been the play in eight of the last 11 meetings among these two teams, overall.
Phoenix Suns's Latest Performance :
As if the Phoenix Suns had not struggled enough, they have had to deal with injury to their star in DeAndre Ayton, who has sat out the last 4 games with an ankle injury. Nonetheless, as a result, the Phoenix Suns have certainly felt it on the offensive end as there has been no one in which to step-up in which to make up for lost offensive production. However, in their last outing versus the Denver Nuggets, Devin Booker certainly did his part for the team as he pumped in 35 points while also going 2-4 from three-point range for the team. Josh Jackson also scored 17 points while Kelly Oubre Jr chipped in 13 and the lost for the Suns.
Nonetheless, Phoenix was manhandled in the second and fourth quarters as the Nuggets outscored the visitors 67-37 during this time en route to the victory. The Nuggets also heavily outrebounded Phoenix in this contest by a 57 – 35 margin while also capitalizing on 15 turnovers as well. Paul Millsap powered in 20 points and nine rebounds for Denver in the much-needed victory while Malik Beasley along with Mason Plumlee also chipped in 19 and 16 points, respectively.
Much like the Lakers, the Phoenix Suns are allowing opponents to score at will as of late. Of course, if they are to pick up the victory vs an offensively challenged team in the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, they will certainly need a much better defensive effort this time around. This may very well be a tall order as the Suns have allowed at least 130 points in three of their last six road games, overall.
L.A. Lakers's Latest Performance :
Of course, one can certainly expect a huge scoring drop off for the Lakers without LeBron James being in the lineup. With that being said, one would think that the strategy for the Lakers would be to hunker down on the defensive end in which to allow their offense more of a chance in which to put points on the board and pick up victories. Nonetheless, this has not been the case as the Lakers continue to drop games due to their inability to remain consistent on the offensive end along with not being able to obtain pivotal stops on the defensive end.
This was certainly the case versus the Minnesota Timberwolves in their last outing as the Timberwolves were able to break open a tightly contested game in the 4th quarter as they outscored the Lakers by 13 points in the final period en route to the victory. On the offensive end, the Lakers could get nothing going during this time as they ended the game shooting 50% from the floor, primarily due to a red-hot first-half to where they went up by three points at the break.
On the other hand, the Minnesota Timberwolves shot just 43% from the floor on the night yet were powered by Karl Anthony Towns as he had 27 points along with 12 rebounds in the win while Andrew Wiggins also pumped in 23 points while grabbing eight rebounds in the victory for the T-wolves as well. As stated, Ingram led the offensive charge for the Lakers with 18 points while pulling out 7 rebounds while with Rajon Rondo chipping in 15 points for the Lakers in the loss.
It will be important to note that the Lakers committed a whopping 17 turnovers throughout this contest, which certainly did not go well for them picking up the victory. ”It went back to physicality,” Lakers coach Luke Walton said. ”They didn’t get turnovers from trying to play-make. They got the ball stripped from them.”
With that being the case, the Lakers certainly look to show a bit of toughness in their Sunday matchup versus the Phoenix Suns, a team that has not showed many signs of consistency either lately. In fact, while the Lakers have allowed at least 120 points in each of the last four outings, the Phoenix Suns have allowed opponents to score an average 120 points in their last four outings.
How Phoenix Suns & L.A. Lakers Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Phoenix is 22 – 29 ATS while the OU is 24 – 27
Los Angeles is 20 – 27 – 2 ATS while the OU is 18 – 30
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This will be an important game for both teams as I certainly expect the Phoenix Suns to put in a much better performance in this contest in which to gain some type of momentum moving forward as they will be looking to erect themselves out of the cellar of the Pacific Division. On the other hand, the Lakers are in big trouble at this point in time as they are currently third place within the Pacific Division; However, the Sacramento Kings are close behind and threatening to overtake a struggling Lakers squad without James in the lineup. Nonetheless, one can certainly expect a very competitive matchup as both of these teams will be fighting tooth-and-nail to pick up an all important victory.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Los Angeles Lakers
My reason for the pick :
In all, one should certainly look for the Phoenix Suns to continue to struggle without Ayton in the lineup. And with no set timetable as to his return, the onus will certainly be on Devin Booker in which two step up his play in the meantime. With that being said, look for Los Angeles to sneak out a slim victory over the struggling Phoenix Suns on Sunday as they will not only perform solidly on the defensive end of the floor for much of the contest, but, Ingram will continue to play well for Los Angeles while Kuzma, as stated, is probable to play in this game, despite a hip injury, as he will certainly provide additional offensive production for a Lakers team that will make some critical buckets down the stretch to pull out the victory in the end.
Totals Selection: Pick: Under
My reason for the prediction :
I will back the under in this contest in that while I do believe that both teams will put some points on the board, the total will not be surpassed due to the ongoing and lingering inconsistencies that exist within each team’s offense. In other words, neither team will be able to convert on the offensive end with any type of consistency throughout this ball game, thus allowing the under to be the strong play.
